Veronica must find and stop a devious killer when a group of old friends is targeted for death in this new adventure from the New York Times bestselling and Edgar Awardnominated author Deanna Raybourn. Veronicas natural-historian beau, Stoker, has been away in Bavaria for months and their relationship is at an impasse. But when Veronica shows up before him with his brother, Tiberius, Lord Templeton-Vane, he is lured back home by an intriguing job offer: preparing an iguanodon for a very special dinner party. Tiberius has received a cryptic messagealong with the obituaries of two recently deceased members of his old group of friends, the Seven Sinnersthat he too should get his affairs in order. Realizing he is in grave danger but not knowing why, he plans a reunion party for the remaining Sinners at his family estate to lure the killer out while Veronica and Stoker investigate. As the guests arrive and settle in, the evenings events turn deadly. More clues come to light, leading Veronica, Stoker, and Tiberius to uncover a shared past among the Sinners that has led to the fatal present. But the truth might be far more sinister than what they were prepared for.

Thank GOODNESS. Gratified to say I can now mark the book directly preceding this one as the only bad egg in the bunch for me and continue onto the latest book in the series with gleeful anticipation (almost caught up!)
The mystery and the shenanigans were engaging as always, but it was definitely the personal growth that made this book in particular satisfying for me. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? I loved the emphasis (a series constant, but more plot forward in this book) on feminist independence, the options available for women at the time, the power imbalance in making any decision in the face of the men in their lives.
It's the perfect backdrop for Veronica to grapple with the idea of vulnerability and trust in a relationship, the fear of heartbreak but also losing her independence, without even considering marriage
3mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? (Thank you, Raybourn for not retracting that aspect of her character). The fact that she has the full book to recognize that her friendships and her relationship with Stoker are in jeopardy because she isolates herself, that the toxic notion of having 'the upper hand(“whip hand“ 😉)' in the relationship is challenged by the dreadful outcome of another love story, let's the reader experience Veronica's perspective and also enjoy the moment she 3mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 realizes it's not serving her anymore.
It still feels like a rarity to have healthy communication and an emotionally available male love interest which made Stoker's clearly expressed feelings about Veronica and what he needs from her emotionally to continue an intimate relationship, so refreshing. And the subsequent 'your turn to woo me', endearing and steamy by turns.
P.S. Always love when the story has a good bit of Tiberius. 😁

I really love this series. A strong female MC who makes a life for herself outside society‘s norms, a damaged but kind male love interest and a good mystery. Caught up to next year‘s release of A Grave Robbery.

I absolutely ADORE Veronica speedwell but the last book left me wanting. Let me reassure you that if you felt the same, give this book a go. It restored my faith in the whole thing. Also I do love a locked room mystery. My only gripe is over the narration, they do not make Stoker sound anywhere near as hot as he comes across in print 🤣in fact he sounds positively elderly. so if you want your imagination left as it is, read don‘t listen.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This one find Veronica and Stoker at the Templeton-Vane estate, helping Stoker's brother Tiberius solve the mystery of who wants to kill him. It's another fun romp!

20 books in March and while there weren‘t any 5 star reads, there were plenty of books I really enjoyed…starting with the tagged book, another excellent Veronica Speedwell outing. I also read a number of great sequels in some fav MG and YA series, devoured Mike Curato‘s fantastic graphic novel, enjoyed Setterfield‘s Bellman & Black and was very entertained by Hell of a Book. One more day of C2E2 and then it‘ll be back into the reading trenches.

This was exactly what I needed yesterday. A bit of sleuthing, a lot of Veronica Speedwell and Stoker and Tiberius and Merryweather. Set at the Templeton-Vane's modest ? country pile at the Jurassic coast the murder actually involves fossils. ?

I knew "whodunnit" early on, but it's the chase that's interesting. With Stoker and Veronica at odds this was more time alone with Veronica; and, of course, seeing how much she can rile up Stoker.

TheSpineView I have done the same thing too many times to count. 🌞 2y

This one was a bit weird. Veronica and Stoker were on the outs, so they didn‘t spend a ton of time together solving crimes. They actually weren‘t very friendly to each other most of the book. I‘m hoping the next book they actually work together to solve a crime!

Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. And we got to spend more time with Stoker‘s brothers.

I love this series.

My absolute favorite historical mystery series, and this most recent installment is one of the best. Multiple murders, more than one murderer, the usual red herrings, and the always fascinating relationship between Veronica and Stoker. Nobody writes better dialogue than Raybourn, I‘m convinced. I took the picture at the Orlando Science Center, and it fits perfectly with the book, but you‘ll need to read it to find out why 😄

CatMS I love getting into series, some you can jump in anywhere and others such as the Three Pines by Louise Penny you should start from first book. How does this series stack up, begin from first book or jump in anywhere? 2y
Lynnsoprano @CatMS I think this is a series that would definitely be more enjoyable if you start with the first book. There‘s a lot of background about the characters that you‘d miss otherwise that really adds to the story. 2y

Book 8 in the Veronica Speedwell series, which is my favorite historical mystery series. Love the characters, snappy dialogue, science, and bit of romance.

The only reason I hadn‘t started this yet was the fact that both hubby‘s and my alma maters ran deep in the Big 10 basketball tournament. I‘ve got until the NCAA Tournament really gets rolling on Thursday to get through this. I doubt it will take me that long, since I have trouble putting these books down.

SamAnne NCAA basketball--men ad women--is the only televised sport I get sucked into watch. And I really get sucked in.... 2y

It‘s a Veronica Speedwell mystery so of course it‘s a fun read. I actually liked this one more than the previous book. This one centers around Stoker‘s brother and an incident from his past—there‘s a grand house, old secrets, murder, and, as always, the ever complicated relationship between Veronica and Stoker.

I'm late with my March #BookSpin list, but since I haven't had time to read yet this month, I think it's okay. 😂

My most anticipated book is tagged; I LOVE the Veronica Speedwell series and the last one ended on a cliffhanger! I've already got the audiobook pre-ordered. 🥰

In February, I read 4 books, three of which ticked (4) boxes on my February Book Spin list. I'm looking forward to seeing what March brings to my TBR!
