Part philosophy. Part biography. Part autobiography. This definitely got me thinking.

TheBookHippie Yes. Things don‘t even occur to them. However I‘ve know very selfish women. Can‘t say I know selfless men 😅 2mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie right? I feel like anyone can be selfish, but men tend to be more prone to it, but also blind to how they are being selfish because it‘s “allowed” or “okay.” 🙄 I also believe anyone can be selfless, but I think it comes more naturally to women, as we are expected to be such from a very young age. 2mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I remember a time when I was 8 or 9 years old. My cousin (who was a year older than me) had his glasses in his pocket (no case, just the glasses). We were all wrestling and his glasses got damaged. My mother would not stop yelling at me and blaming me, no matter how much my aunt said this was on him because he knew better than to have them in his pocket like that and he was older than me. 2mo

GingerAntics I feel like it went by very quickly and there could have been more. Of course, I also pause to wonder what the sources available on these women are. There may not be that many, and therefore this *could* in theory be the best she could do or a valiant attempt. I‘m still juggling those two opposing thoughts. 3mo
TheBookHippie I think there are many we‘ve no idea about! Matriarch society was a thing but we seem to not have its history.. 2mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I wonder if part of that is because matriarchies don‘t have a need to toot their own horns the way patriarchy does, and outsiders would have been/are patriarchies and just want to tear down the entire concept. 2mo

kspenmoll Yup. In 2021 our new English curriculum director took away our grammar program- direct instruction with workbooks, then application in sentences, paragraphs, essays. It‘s kind of like the Lucy Calkins approach-they will learn grammar by osmosis. We get 9th graders that are not clear about nouns. We have added it to vocabulary etc. craziness 3mo
GingerAntics @kspenmoll that makes exactly zero sense! I had college freshmen who didn‘t know what a contraction was, so I know the feeling. When did it become cool to actively choose to fail our children? 3mo
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll the curriculum changes have been horrific to the learning of grammar. Horrific. Women have to be better spoken, they have to be perfect to even come close to competing with men for jobs in certain fields I feel. And to be taken seriously maybe… 🤪 3mo

“… she [Wollstonecraft]was also a philosopher.Godwin could have called her a female Rousseau, because Rousseau was her favorite thinker and because, like him she wrote novels, autobiographical fiction, and philosophical works. But this is not how Godwin, a self-described philosopher who also wrote novels, thought of her, and it is not how she is remembered today. Her work is read, but mostly in English studies and women‘s studies.Rarely in philosophy.”

kspenmoll Quote is from tagged book.William Godwin, philosopher & author, was Wollstonecraft‘s partner & father of Mary Shelley of Frankenstein fame.Pictured are a few of the books that were written by or about women that my son read(I also read some of the pictured) in his Philosophy classes at UConn. kspenmoll In college I was definitely beaten back but I did not name it at the time.I just felt so wrong intuitively where I was,but could not find any initiative to change my circumstances. In retrospect, I think i was depressed. I was the 2nd class in an all male Catholic college whose many teachers & make colleagues made it abundantly clear women were not wanted. My 1st semester I called the school clinic & asked to see someone for meds for a yeast 🔽 (edited) 3mo
kspenmoll 🔼 infection (on antibiotics)& I got a call from the Dean‘s office- Intrusive-the inference I got was they thought I was pregnant - my dad was an MD so I called him & got meds mailed to me- so many other stories-being followed by a drunk guy yelling “c..t”. My close friends all transferred by 2nd semester or left. It was my father‘s college & he was proud I was there & I could not talk to him about all this… 3mo

This quote REALLY got me. America was built on individualism and every man for themselves, with women entirely excluded. If this country wants to call itself a Christian nation, it needs to start there. Either you are a Christian nation and this should be the standard practice, or you‘re all about individualism and everyone for themselves which is the true antithesis of Christianity, even before Rome came and corrupted it.

kspenmoll Agree. We should not be a nation of any religion but obviously in the last few decades Christianity has taken over our government. It is a hypocritical shield for so much greed, evil in my mind, for exclusion of any one with a different philosophy, religion, way of life, world view. (edited) 3mo
GingerAntics @kspenmoll oh my gods yes! From a historical standpoint it‘s been much longer than a few decades, but this is definitely the result either way. They have certainly gotten more extreme and angry in the last few decades for sure. 3mo

This was something I really struggled with when I was in college and grad school. To look at the world, to look at history, to look at humanity, especially to be a historian as a female is to see where men wax poetic ad nauseam about the dignity of man, but never apply that to women. Sadly, it feels like this is still happening. I don‘t want to be treated better than you because I am not. I simply want to be treated as an equal, because I am.

kspenmoll Some of this book is sad in that such attitudes about women still exist- they are familiar. 3mo
GingerAntics @kspenmoll I totally had that thought! I‘m sitting here thinking not much has changed. How are we still combatting this bull?! 3mo

Regan converses with her “demon of doubt”because she failed 1 day of a 3 day ordeal of questioning by professors,a step required to pass before be allowed to research her dissertation.
She is an “imposter”, an interloper in this philosophical world.

kspenmoll I do not think public schools provide that- too many constraints from Boards of Ed, towns, states, etc. A rigorous education would mean a derp study of classics, languages, science, etc. That might be what college is for, & why colleges have requirements to meet before one graduates. 4mo
kspenmoll Let us know how you are. Sending love & hope to you.💛❤️💛 (edited) 4mo
GingerAntics @kspenmoll I‘ve had this thought before. Public schools and schools in general are working off a model designed to make good factory workers. Perhaps one has to go to college to get a real education, which is disheartening seeing how expensive it is. 3mo

kspenmoll To answer the question, I do not think Christianity puts character at the center of its teaching, but rather rules & regulations & sin is in the forefront. Character seems minor to me in my aged old experience. 4mo
GingerAntics @kspenmoll oh definitely! I feel like christianity is far more concerned with appearance and theology as opposed to actually having a good character. Good character is totally other. 3mo

John Locke introduced Masham to Astell‘s & Norris‘s philosophical works. She disagreed with some of their thinking, writing in response,”A Discourse Concerning the Love of God.”She took umbrage at their endorsement of Malebranche, who‘s beliefs that a mother was cursed-her imagination could result in a baby‘s physical distortions, but more importantly, that the transmission of original sin, thus human evil was the mother‘s fault(110).
