Pickpick

The book started off a little slow for me. But then when it picked up….i couldn‘t put it down. The ending threw me for a loop (as far as the actual killer). I loved the author‘s added info at the end on Victorian beliefs in terms of spiritualism and mourning.

Bailedbailed

Life is too short for the books that I don't vibe with 🤷🏼‍♀️

ShelleyBooksie I bailed on this one as well and I had hoped to love.it. Couldn't get into it at all. 1y
currentlyreadinginCO Same, it seemed right up my alley but I just couldn't find myself caring about it @ShelleyBooksie 1y

Mehso-so

I found the information about 19th C. spiritualism interesting in Penner‘s second novel, but the writing is a bit muddy. Vaudeline D‘Allaire is a famous medium, known for her debunking of others in her field and the tricks they employ. Lenna Wickes is apprenticing with Ms D‘Allaire, desperate to learn the truth as to her sister‘s murder. Together they take on corruption at the heart of the London Séance Society. Predictable plot, but diverting.

Mehso-so

I really do love the cover art of Sarah Penner books, but I thought this story was just okay. The second half was better but the character development in the first half just didn‘t get me excited for what the end might bring. I think I would have liked this more if she had channelled (pun intended) a little Daphne du Maurier to make this darker and creepier in it‘s telling.

nightvalelibrarian I read the lost apothecary and was underwhelmed. She left some pretty huge loose ends in the plot. She has some great concepts but her storytelling is very underdeveloped. 2y
marleed @nightvalelibrarian Oh, you penned my thoughts so well with underdeveloped concept. 2y
Aims42 Thank you for this review! I enjoyed her first book, but the summary on this book had me feeling “meh”. I‘ll get around to reading it, but good to know I won‘t need to rush to read it 👍 2y
tpixie @nightvalelibrarian yes. I liked the historical part better than the current age in Apothecary. And that ending with the historical women was too vague. I‘m 1/2 through this book now @marleed 2y

#BOTM delivery was super quick this month.
It sits atop of my ever expanding #BOTM pile.
The painting behind the book is one I made at a Bob Ross class.

#BOTM pick. I‘ve been looking forward to this one.
I was bummed that The Golden Spoon wasn‘t a pick, but I was just approved for it on #netgalley so that worked out well. I thought about getting The Soulmate and Lone Women too, but put them on hold at the library instead.
