The Librarianist
The Librarianist: A Novel | Patrick DeWitt
From bestselling and award-winning author Patrick deWitt comes the story of Bob Comet, a man who has lived his life through and for literature, unaware that his own experience is a poignant and affecting novel in itself. Bob Comet is a retired librarian passing his solitary days surrounded by books and small comforts in a mint-colored house in Portland, Oregon. One morning on his daily walk he encounters a confused elderly woman lost in a market and returns her to the senior center that is her home. Hoping to fill the void hes known since retiring, he begins volunteering at the center. Here, as a community of strange peers gathers around Bob, and following a happenstance brush with a painful complication from his past, the events of his life and the details of his character are revealed. Behind Bob Comets straight-man facade is the story of an unhappy childs runaway adventure during the last days of the Second World War, of true love won and stolen away, of the purpose and pride found in the librarians vocation, and of the pleasures of a life lived to the side of the masses. Bobs experiences are imbued with melancholy but also a bright, sustained comedy; he has a talent for locating bizarre and outsize players to welcome onto the stage of his life. With his inimitable verve, skewed humor, and compassion for the outcast, Patrick deWitt has written a wide-ranging and ambitious document of the introverts condition. The Librarianist celebrates the extraordinary in the so-called ordinary life, and depicts beautifully the turbulence that sometimes exists beneath a surface of serenity.

I'm gonna make a hash of this review. The equation goes: the better the writing, the more incoherent my praise becomes! I think I'm intimidated by the sheer craftsmanship. 😅
I am cast giddily back to my experience of reading North Woods: the episodic nature of the storytelling, more historical than I anticipated, potentially not the kind of tale I'd usually like, but thanks to the INCREDIBLE writing, I LOVED IT. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Despite what might objectively be considered myriad melancholy experiences shot through with pleasant humour, you don't come away sad, or as is my wont if I think it's overwrought, mad.
The characters are not necessarily always charming, but they are charmingly drawn, there's a sense of effortlessly breathing life into people we may not spend a great deal of time with, and yet still have a great sense of.
2mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? I feel I should caution my fellow 'read the synopsis? Never!' daredevils, that where I thought this book was going at the end of the first chapter is NOT where it landed. I'd be happy to read a book that centred solely on a retired librarian, and interactions with a seniors centre enriching all those involved, this was not that, or rather that was a book ending moment but not the full story. 2mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? If you've got any recs like that I'm happy to take them! [I've already read The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams which I think is the closest I've come to old person, library, community vibe]. 2mo
See All 6 Comments
Robotswithpersonality 5/? Not quite a caution, but in attempting to recommend this to the right audience I do want to emphasize: loss is a theme throughout, death of loved ones, but also people who leave, people who approach the end of their lives. What really worked for me was the sense not that anyone settled for a life they were unable to improve, but that they recognized happiness and the truth of life plans going awry, that they made choices 2mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/7 but also had to acknowledge when change was not in their control, maybe forgive the universe, and the people in it, and live a full life regardless of how others would perceive it.

⚠️ Dementia, suicide
2mo
Robotswithpersonality 7/7 Sidebar: Is there any textual evidence clearly provided that backs up my fannon casting of Bob as demisexual? Not really, no. Did the way he was written make me feel seen and more connected to the character? Yes, and a personal reader interpretation can provide such joy, and does not necessarily need to become discourse. 2mo

New word and new knowledge!

A glasspack is a type of automobile muffler in which the exhaust gas passes straight through the center of the muffler. The basic design consists of one smaller tube centered inside a larger outer tube that is enlarged or swollen in the middle. The gap between the enlarged part of the outer tube and the center tube is packed with fiberglass, hence the name.

This was such a simple story, of a quiet man‘s simple life, but it was also deeply moving and powerfully told. DeWitt has a way of drawing everyday life events in rich colours and textures to make them feel more extraordinary and special — much as they would be to those experiencing those moments. I loved this book, with its love and celebration of words, and its simple, beautiful story.

Oh, hello, it's me, your Saturday librarian! While I'm at work, I hope you all are at home reading. Or at a coffee shop, reading. Or enjoying a spring day in the park, reading. Or at the pub, reading. You get my drift! Send me your reference questions through 6:00PM Alaska DST today. :-) Silly reference questions and your run-of-the-mill reference questions are all welcome. #SaturdayLibrarian

#LitsyTOB

I get the real TOB emails and decided to see what happened in today‘s round with my morning coffee. I have to say I don‘t know anything about the judge Rufi Thorpe but her breakdown to choosing her favorite of the three was a hoot. And now I‘m off to check out her books. Even if you aren‘t into the TOB I think you‘ll get a kick out of this review. Here‘s the link:

ImperfectCJ Thanks for sharing! I get the emails, too, but I was saving it to read later. Your post (and link) got me reading it earlier, and I very much enjoyed it. I haven't read any of these yet, but now I'm looking forward to them (or at least to The Librarianist...the mention of an extended stream-of-consciousness section in The Bee Sting made me leery as I am working my way through Ducks, Newburyport and might never want to read SoC again). 9mo
Deblovestoread @ImperfectCJ I am going to give The Bee Sting a pass but will read the tagged at some point. The Auburn Conference was an enjoyable listen. 9mo

A #tob24 title that I was really looking forward to bur I found the lack of cohesion in the story off putting. Some sections I liked, one section I skimmed, and it just never came together for me and overall I was disappointed.

I‘m a bit flummoxed by this one. I enjoyed it immensely but I also feel like it really doesn‘t hold together as a whole. Almost a third of the book is dedicated to a childhood story of the main character, Bob, and it‘s completely enchanting, but it doesn‘t fit into the rest of the book and even carry a consistent characterization of Bob. So I can‘t quite give it a pick. But it would be a great book club book and I want a whole book about Linus.

catiewithac I'm liking this for the dog 😍 9mo
Librariana It's lovely when we have those feelings about side characters... that they could've gotten their own book. Sounds like Linus was a well-rounded one! I always appreciate the way you share your opinions of a book 😊 9mo

Hooked_on_books @catiewithac I‘ll be honest—there are some posts that I struggle to read at all because I can‘t take my eyes off the dog! So, I get it. And appreciate it! 9mo
Hooked_on_books @Librariana Aw, thanks! I appreciate honesty in reviews from others so I can assess a book well, so that‘s what I try to do. Linus is an old guy in a wheelchair with absolutely no filter who will blaze right over the top of anyone if he lets them. He‘s a hoot! 9mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain That‘s it exactly! Great writing, great stories, but not a novel. It just felt like 2 different ideas smashed together that really didn‘t have anything to do with one another. 9mo

I‘m not entirely sure how I feel about this book, but I did enjoy it. It went off on a tangent like no other very early on, which threw me off, but it came together with remarkable clarity at the end. This story of an aging man who begins to volunteer at the senior living center nearby is endearing and sweet without being saccharine. Not as grumpy as Backman, not as sweet as The Storied Life if A.J.Fikry. Enjoyable!

Finished this a few days ago and the experience reminds me why ebooks are NOT for favorite. I got all settled in and snuggled to enjoy and WHAT?!?!!! It ended. I had no idea I was on the second to last page 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️😳🤦🏻‍♀️

Book ends abruptly. I was not expecting it.

And I was finally getting into it and liking all the characters!! Oh well. If I had read the physical book, I think I would have liked it even more. Maybe.

BkClubCare @Tamra - certainly not a big deal, really. But you know when you finally get time to find the right comfy spot and settle in…. LOL 11mo
Billypar I can sympathize - it's so jarring when that happens 😅 I use Libby and it says how many pages are left but I always forget about the acknowledgements, footnotes, or any other material after the end. 11mo

BkClubCare @Billypar IKR?! Yes, which is why I prefer hardcovers that don‘t usually have anything after the last page. 11mo
bthegood that eggnog looks like it might have made the experience a bit less harsh (looks yummy) - agree on ebooks (physical copy I feel better knowing where I really am in the book )❄️ 11mo
BkClubCare @bthegood - truly, a physical book is easier to flip back and check things. Yea, I can in ebook use search but you lose a sense of where along in the story it is. I am old school 😔 11mo

I enjoyed this novel about Bob, a retired librarian who meets a new group of friends. The beginning section had me laughing out loud - I love deWitt‘s deadpan humour. The middle about Bob‘s marriage is affecting & characters are true to life. I find deWitt‘s matter of fact style comforting. His wit & mastery of character keep it interesting but it‘s understated & calm at the same time. It didn‘t sustain the energy of the beginning but a fun read.

There are just some books I‘m going to read based on the title/cover alone, as a librarian and this fits into that category. I actually listened to the audiobook which I found engaging at the beginning but slowly petered out for me. Readers get to know Bob, a now retired librarian whose wife is out of the picture, and we spend much of the book focusing on that relationship. It lost me a bit during the runaway flashback. Overall, fine. #tob24

I‘m going to keep listening to this bc of the Litsy love, but I just about bailed when the MC asks his love interest‘s father whether he should have sex with her. Though it is phrased such that the father doesn‘t know who the girlfriend is……who does that? Totally catapulted me out of the flow of the story. 🫤

Yay, finished a book! DeWitts characters are always quirky, & Bob Comet , humble librarian is no exception. When @merelybookish noted Wes Anderson like , I agree . Soft pick for me, soft chuckles through most of it. I liked French Exit better.

A soft pick. A novel about a librarianist named Bob Comet. Story starts when he's retired and inadvertently gets a gig volunteering at a seniors home. It feels a bit like DeWitt wanted to create a character study of an unexciting man (who still has a somewhat eventful life.). Between a soft pick and a so-so. Dewitt is like the Wes Anderson of fiction. (I can't be the first to make that comparison.)

I enjoyed the first half of this book, but man, the second half catapulted me to loving it. DeWitt has such a gift for bringing his characters to life (I want June & Ida to have a spin-off novel!) and his storytelling is second to none. When I had 20 pages left I wasn‘t sure how everything was going to come together but it did, and perfectly. I‘d put this on par with his earlier book, “French Exit” which I‘d highly recommend also. Five stars!!
