It is Charlotte's first night at boarding school. But when she wakes up, the girl in the next bed is not the person who was sleeping there the evening before. And the new building outside her window seems to have metamorphosed into a huge, dark cedar tree! Somehow, Charlotte has slipped back forty years.

Wonderful! And quite haunting. This book has so many elements I am drawn to—questions of identity and belonging, ghosts, time travel, boarding school, WWI, the 1918 flu pandemic.

Another great NYRB pick. Wish I‘d known about this one as a 10-12 year old! Better late than never. I still enjoyed it thoroughly as an adult.

Cathythoughts Sounds really good 👍🏻 2y
jlhammar Oh, and for those who might be interested, looks like today (Feb 20) is the last day of NYRB's Winter Sale. 40% off four books or more:

I asked the kiddo which of these three she wanted to read together next (by reading the backs). She surprised me by picking Charlotte Sometimes (one of my favorites as a kid)! It seems she‘s going to be a sucker for time travel just like me! 😍 🕰

@vivastory tagged the #NYRBBook club regarding their fave nyrb reads. All my faves are in the New York Review Children‘s Collection. The literary novels are mostly hit or miss for me. I joined the #NYRB Reading Week sometime in 2010 where I talked about these titles and so many others, including literary fiction, as you can see here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-kc

vivastory Excellent selection. I've had my eye on the Thurber. 6y
CarolynM I love The Magic Pudding❤️ So funny! 6y
merelybookish These are the NYRB that I want to collect! 6y

I enjoyed this children‘s book- it‘s funny how different similar cultures can be, then add in time travel. I was also sad for all these children to have such dislike and distrust with adult relationships. But I know that was and still can be fairly common. Also I am really interested in reading more about WWI now. #blameitonlitsy

LeahBergen Has it changed your impression of The Cure at all? 😆 6y
Chrissyreadit @LeahBergen it‘s crazy but yes! At 47 I may be able to enjoy them again!!! I‘m so glad this book came up- I enjoyed it a lot and felt more appreciation because of the article! 6y

I tell myself that I have to get a grip on my 1-click habit and 10 minutes later I see a post from @Balibee146 and I'm falling off the wagon. #blameitonlitsy 🤣

Redwritinghood I have the same problem! I see something here and go buy it. It‘s addictive. 6y
Balibee146 Awww sorry (not sorry 😉)..... Know exactly what you mean. Enjoy x x 6y
Sace @Redwritinghood it's so hard to stop myself. At least I've gotten in the habit of checking Hoopla and the library catalog first. 6y

@LeahBergen is responsible for a run on this book over the weekend!
Can‘t really call your daughter after the song and not read the book! On the pile it goes.

LeahBergen Yay! You‘re making me want to read it again now. 👏🏻 6y
LeahBergen Here‘s a fun fact. I was supposed to be named Charlotte, too (for my great-grandmother) but my Mom got her way (I mean, who‘s the one giving birth here? 😆)and named me after one of her favourite songs, Roy Orbison‘s “Leah”. Do you know it? So I‘m named after a song, too, just like your daughter. 😘 6y
TrishB @LeahBergen that‘s so cool 👍🏻 and another lovely name 😘 6y
Balibee146 I loved this book when I was young... Think I have it somewhere on my shelves for a nostalgia re read 6y

4 stars! Definitely took an emotive turn at the end, the book itself was really well written and blended fact with time travel! Mysterious all the way through and definitely kept me wondering what would happen next. Very bittersweet. I'm definitely going to miss these characters. #bookish #penelopefarmer #bookworm #bookporn #charlottesometimes #history #booknerd

And another classic book about time-travelling British children before this year is over. I may need an intervention (especially with these gummies). Any fans of The Cure's song, "Charlotte Sometimes"? This book inspired it.

KarenUK anything by 'the Cure'! 💕💕💕Robert Smith Fan-girl😍👍! 8y

LeahBergen @KarenUK It's really quite a remarkably mature little tale... I loved it. As a Smith fangirl you may want to read this 👇🏻.The author (as a granny) blogs about finally meeting Smith in the late '90s. So great! 😍http://nyrb.typepad.com/classics/2007/09/penelope-farmer.html (edited) 8y

My father gave my daughters a subscription to a book collection from the New York Review of Books. They receive a classic children's book every two months, and this is the latest to arrive. It's about a girl who travels back in time forty years and has a different identity in the past.
