The Shamshine Blind
The Shamshine Blind: A Novel | Paz Pardo
8 posts | 9 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
A beguiling blend of noir detective story and science fiction perfect for fans of Michael Chabon and Emily St. John Mandel, this unputdownable debut imagines a world where emotions have been weaponized, and a small-town law enforcement agent uncovers a conspiracy to take down whats left of American democracy. In an alternate 2009, the United States has been a second-rate power for a quarter of a century, ever since Argentinas victory in the Falklands War thanks to their development of psychopigments. Created as weapons, these colorful chemicals can produce almost any human emotion upon contact, and they have been embraced in the US as both pharmaceutical cure-alls and popular recreational drugs. Black market traders illegally sell everything from Blackberry Purple (which causes terror) to Sunshine Yellow (which delivers happiness). Psychopigment Enforcement Agent Kay Curtida works a beat in Daly City, just outside the ruins of San Francisco, chasing down smalltime crooks. But when an old friend shows up with a tantalizing lead on a career-making case, Curtidas humdrum existence suddenly gets a boost. Little does she know that this case will send her down a tangled path of conspiracy and lead to an overdue reckoning with her family and with the truth of her own emotions. Told in the voice of a funny, brooding, Latinx Sam Spade, The Shamshine Blind is a rip-roaring beautifully crafted mash-up of cop noir, sci-fi, and alt-history that left me dazzled by its prescience and literary zing (Leah Hampton, author of F*ckface).

I really like the premise behind this novel. It's unique (and quite a treat to read about the US falling from power for reasons other than climate change or zombies), but it didn't quite hit for me in the execution. (Also the narrator gave a Brooklyn accent to a character with a Boston accent, which is a small thing, but it bugs me.)

A compelling premise, the alternate history undertones and noir storytelling vibes attracted my attention to this book. While this is ultimately an interesting story that unpacks some complex ideas about history, nations, and the ways that we exert social control over people, I felt like the intersection of three styles of storytelling and construction impacted the pacing and kept me a bit at arms length which was a shame.

I found this clever and entertaining, but it‘s not one that will stay with me too long. I don‘t see it winning the #ToB24.

A global conflict in the 80s left the US in tatters and no longer a world power. Now, pigments, which alter people‘s emotions, are used medically, recreationally, and in warfare. Agent Curtida is assigned to a crime scene that seems to involve a new, illegally made pigment. I found this fascinating, both the dystopian world and the mystery story. Well constructed plot and world. #tob24

AmyG I won this on goodreads so glad to know it‘s a decent book. 12mo

I tried to read this real #tob24 shortlist pick, and I just couldn‘t get into it. It‘s a crime novel with a sci-fi alternate history twist. Sounds cool, but it was actually quite boring. 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you‘re also disappointed with the tob shortlist, it is not too late to vote for the #LitsyToB24 shortlist and help us award the first Turkey! https://forms.gle/uKQCk4G5XU7qhErx8

squirrelbrain Yours is the first ToB review I‘ve seen for this one. I didn‘t really fancy it anyway! 🤣 12mo
Megabooks @squirrelbrain lol! I tried. I listened to 3 of 11 hours, but I didn‘t want to waste any more of my free Spotify time on a book I wasn‘t enjoying. 12mo
Addison_Reads I just got this audiobook from the library. I was going to start it today, but I might wait now. 12mo
Megabooks @Addison_Reads very curious to read your thoughts! I don‘t do well with books that over explain their world building, and that was the case with this one as well. 12mo

The #tob24 shortlist is so disappointing!! I do want to remind those of us who are on the #completist side that US Spotify premium members get 15 hours of streaming audiobooks per month as part of membership. That‘s how I listened to Cold People and probably how I‘ll do this one and maybe Brainwyms 🤢🫣. Stay safe out there! 🤣

The shortlist: https://www.tournamentofbooks.com/the-2024-shortlist

squirrelbrain Blimey - I can‘t imagine listening to Brainwyrms on audio. Audio is why I bailed on Manhunt last year, and Brainwyrms is *much* worse. 😬 13mo

squirrelbrain And I‘m not being a completist this time - I‘ve fallen out with ToB! 🤣 13mo
Megabooks I will likely not read Brainwyrms @squirrelbrain 🤣🤣 and probably this one I‘ll tag because there‘s no audio and my library doesn‘t have the print. Hoopla has the ebook but I‘m so touchy with screens! The rest I‘ve read or can borrow from the library/spotify. So I guess I‘ll try. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 13mo
BarbaraBB I don‘t want to read Brainwyrms, nor the Emma Cline or the one about Melville and the mountain lion. What were they thinking?! I guess I‘ll skip our parallel tournament this year? @squirrelbrain 13mo
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Maybe we can do an ALTERNATIVE ToB similar #CampLitsy ? Let‘s pick those books we DO want to read from the longlist. 13mo
Deblovestoread @Ruthiella I like the way you think! 13mo
kwmg40 @Ruthiella @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain I love the idea of an alternative ToB! Maybe pick the best from the ToB list (since I still want to read at least some of the official list) and fill in with others from the longlist? 13mo
Hooked_on_books This is one that actually appealed to me from the longlist and I have it out from the library, so I‘ll definitely read it. I enjoyed being a completist last year, but I strongly expect not to bother trying to this year. Sounds like a have a lot of good company in that. 13mo
Hooked_on_books @Ruthiella I like this idea, too! 13mo
Megabooks I‘ve emailed the other #CampLitsy counselors to see what they think, but I don‘t expect to hear back until morning there at this point. Time zones! @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Ruthiella @Deblovestoread @kwmg40 @Hooked_on_books 13mo
Chelsea.Poole Oh wow, just catching up with the shortlist. I‘m with everyone, disappointed with much of it 😔 13mo
Addison_Reads I was very surprised by the short list. I normally expect some upsets, but I don't really see any standouts on this list. 13mo
cariashley I really like the idea of our own parallel TOB! 13mo

Creative and colorful, Pardo‘s debut novel mashes together noir-detective style with dystopian sci-fi in a hard to categorize, but compulsively readable fashion! Agent Kay Curtida approaches retirement age (40!) in that backwater of Daly City, CA while her best friend from the academy reached greater heights in the Big Potato. But when a case involving illegally manufactured emotions becomes larger than expected, it takes her all to solve it!

TorieStorieS @TheBookgeekFrau I hope you enjoy it! This is such a fresh debut! I loved the world-building of this alternate 2009 reality! 2y

Had to keep reminding myself that this wasn't a Jasper Fforde book. Like Thursday Next meets Shades of Gray. I was thoroughly entertained even if it was a bit madcap occasionally.
