The Art of Prophecy
The Art of Prophecy: A Novel | Wesley Chu
17 posts | 10 read | 11 to read
A superb fantasy saga (Helene Wecker) of martial arts and magic, about what happens when a prophesied hero is not the chosen one after allbut has to work with a band of unlikely allies to save the kingdom anyway, from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Lives of Tao An ambitious and touching exploration of disillusionment in faith, tradition, and familya glorious reinvention of fantasy and wuxia tropes.Naomi Novik, New York Times bestselling author of A Deadly Education So many stories begin the same way: With a prophecy. A chosen one. And the inevitable quest to slay a villain, save the kingdom, and fulfill a grand destiny. But this is not that kind of story. It does begin with a prophecy: A child will rise to defeat the Eternal Khan, a cruel immortal god-king, and save the kingdom. And that prophecy did anoint a hero, Jian, raised since birth in luxury and splendor, and celebrated before he has won a single battle. But thats when the story hits its first twist: The prophecy is wrong. What follows is a story more wondrous than any prophecy could foresee, and with many unexpected heroes: Taishi, an older woman who is the greatest grandmaster of magical martial arts in the kingdom but who thought her adventuring days were all behind her; Sali, a straitlaced warrior who learns the rules may no longer apply when the leader to whom she pledged her life is gone; and Qisami, a chaotic assassin who takes a little too much pleasure in the kill. And Jian himself, who has to find a way to become what he no longer believes he can bea hero after all.

Sword and sorcery fantasy which turns prophecy on its head. Interesting but I probably won't continue the series. I'm just not in the mood for sword and sorcery at the moment.

Pretty sure this was a me problem. I think this is one I‘d be better off with reading the physical book, but listening to it just could not grab my attention.

I loved this book. I enjoyed all of the point of view characters. I loved the fight scenes. There were many times that I didn‘t want to put the book down, but had to for work (boooooo). I‘m definitely ready to read book 2: “The Art of Destiny” 🙂

I'm so glad I happened to pick this up at the library! This is a magical, martial arts fantasy. What happens when the prophecy breaks before it's fulfilled? The book follows 4 main characters who have to figure out what to do now. One of the characters is an elderly, disabled woman who is a grandmaster and she can still kick everyone‘s ass. Big fan!

I think I might be in love 😍

When Robin Hobb recommended this one, I knew I wouldn't be able to resist. What a cover though. And the endpapers have a full colour map... I hope the story lives up to the tasty packaging!

Come for the cover, stay for Ling Taishi 😍. The three extremely hardcore females make this epic martial arts fantasy. It struggled in the middle for me, but I loved the beginning and thought it wrapped up well.

#ARC #MountARC #NetGalley

Set in an alternate China. Martial Arts fights that far exceed what you‘ve seen in the cinema. A slowly expanding cast of characters. A Chosen One Coming of Age story like no other I‘ve read in a long time.

Wow! This start to a new epic fantasy series really surpassed my expectations! Not being into martial arts, I worried a little bit that this one would be too violent & focused on fighting. While there‘s definitely plenty of action, the strength of the setting & the development of the characters is what dominates this well-written novel. Chu takes a common trope- the Chosen child & turns it into something fresh & fun! I can‘t wait for the sequel!

I read this wonderful Arc during my stay in the mountains. I loved this book.
The world building was excellent. The characters were both hilarious and wild, and as with any fantasy book, there are plenty of characters and storylines. If you‘re into Wuxia/Xianxia with incredible world building this is for you.
