Pickpick

I was not prepared for this one to be all the emotions!!!
I would like to point out that the back of the book jacket has 'Praise for Zen Cho' (the author, not the book), and amongst these is the quote from John Scalzi “fun and full of adventure“. I'm thinking that's probably in reference to a different book. There are hijinks and high action moments, there is banter, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? but overall there is the devastation that war brings, there are discussions of faith and spirituality, there are webs of connection and duty. There are some interesting things going on in regards to gender expression and discussion, but there's also a heaping helping of sexism/misogyny that works as a foil for certain characters, and while it is regularly overcome, and potentially historically accurate in this semi-fantasy setting, it's still 4w
Robotswithpersonality 3/? dispiriting to read. It didn't end how I thought it might, but I'll admit I wasn't sure how it would end for most of the book. I'm struggling with the divide of becoming very invested in these characters and feeling very disconnected from the religious belief/power that drives or challenges several of them. The ending would not have had the same impact if more traditional choices were made, but as it is, I'm left wanting more of everyone's 4w
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 story, the sometimes-hazards of a novella. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 4w

I mean, if you're going to have a religious order, ensuring your nuns can kick ass if necessary just seems practical. 💁🏼‍♂️

When arms instructor Lin Chong is wrongfully accused of treason, she is rescued and taken to the mountain sanctuary of Liangshan where she joins bandits who fight for the good of the Empire.

Bad ass women being bad ass while taking down corrupt politicians. Shes, Theys, and (maybe??) Gays unite!
Also, magic (that isn‘t magic).
I enjoyed this book so much!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds good! Stacking! 3mo

Great adventure fantasy. I like that it is mostly a band of women and non binary folks as protagonist bandits, but really, this I s a darker Asian version of the kind of tale the three musketeers are👍

This queer, feminist retelling of a Chinese classic follows a master arms instructor whose life is destroyed by a corrupt official. But when a band of outlaws save her, she discovers a new way of living she's never let herself imagine before. If you love martial arts movies/ books, this is definitely for you.v

Enjoying this one so far. About halfway through and the story has really picked up after a slightly slower start.
