Amari and the Great Game | B. B. Alston
21 posts | 18 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
Sequel to the New York Times bestseller Amari and the Night Brothers! Artemis Fowl meets Men in Black in this magical second book in the New York Times and Indie bestselling Supernatural Investigations trilogy--perfect for fans of Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky, the Percy Jackson series, and Nevermoor. After finding her brother and saving the entire supernatural world, Amari Peters is convinced her first full summer as a Junior Agent will be a breeze. But between the fearsome new Head Minister's strict anti-magician agenda, fierce Junior Agent rivalries, and her brother Quinton's curse steadily worsening, Amari's plate is full. So when the secretive League of Magicians offers her a chance to stand up for magiciankind as its new leader, she declines. She's got enough to worry about! But her refusal allows someone else to step forward, a magician with dangerous plans for the League. This challenge sparks the start of the Great Game, a competition to decide who will become the Night Brothers' successor and determine the future of magiciankind. The Great Game is both mysterious and deadly, but among the winner's magical rewards is Quinton's last hope--so how can Amari refuse?

Super cute middle grade fantasy. Second book in the series. Took a little longer to hook me into the story than the first book. I could see students strongly relating to all the changing friendships that Amari must navigate. Even though I find it hard to believe that any supernatural institution would give kids as much responsibility as they do here with the junior agents, it‘s still a fun read.

Good second book - but def read the first one first, and not only because it‘s better. This is good - action packed and fast moving,,, but a little too much set up and unnecessary gimmicky tries for humor at the start. The ‘Great Game‘ doesn‘t even start until halfway, and then gets rushed to the finish. But I don‘t think a kid reader will mind any of the things that bothered me. Like at all

TheBookHippie I loved the first one!!! Haven‘t gotten to this yet. 10mo

Audible Sale … I bought 4 new books … $22.96. I was approved for a sci-fi ARC. A Hoopla loan for The Last Kingdom because it‘s included in the Audible sale & I‘m only allowing myself 4 new books. 😫 so I‘m adding some books to my June TBR this weekend. How‘s your weekend?

I enjoyed this second book in the Amari series. The characters in this series are delightful and it is a very well created magical school. This book was a bit long and could use some small edits, as it definitely dragged the first third of the book. However, once the main plot takes off it is another fun adventure. This is not a standalone and you do need to read book 1 first. 4⭐️

This was a good sequel but it went on just a bit too long and the ending was a bit of a let down. The characters were great. Just wish the plot would have been tightened up a bit.

I love these books and, fortunately, so does Beatrix. But now we are in the Harry Potter conundrum of having to wait for the next instalment to be released. I do hope she does not outgrow them before the series finishes.
Amari‘s troubles continue in this second novel - problems with the Bureau, the League of Magicians, and Dylan, in addition to being demonised and targeted for simply being a magician. Another page-turner.

I loved Amari from the start when I was lucky enough to win a draw for a signed advance copy of the first book and a group zoom call with other indie booksellers, with B B Alston (what a warm and humble guy). So I've been waiting patiently until Christmas for this one and a rainy indoorsy day to devour it cosied up by the fire. Brilliant, gripping, magical adventure with awesome female leads, LOVED it.

Finally reading the new Amari (Yes, primarily on my Kobo copy to protect my beautiful Waterstones special edition. Yes, I may have a problem) and when I tell you this book has me STRESSED. But also these books have given me back a magic I wasn‘t sure I would find again and I adore them.

Wow. What a wonderful package for #allHallowsReadSwap from @forestandcrow I can not wait to delve into this series and just recently I was trying to talk my friends into giving P Briggs a try and now I have a copy for our buddy read she is planning. It‘s awesome. Thank you.

There are also wonderful stickers and pencils but I didn‘t want to play keep away with the cat.

forestandcrow I was excited to see that my local book store had a signed copy! It was the last one 😊 I'm so happy you love it. 2y

Amari is back for a second year. So is Dylan. But it‘s Elise and Jayden really stole the story for me. They‘re both such great characters. Jayden fits so well right in with the group. I feel bad for Amari and the amount that the bureau goes against her for being a magician. Just be sure of what group she “belongs to.” Cannot wait for what book 3 entails.

This audio book was an excellent distraction as I went to get my vaccine booster, and then had a lazy day on the couch after. Same action and humor as Amari goes through a second summer with the bureau.

B.B. Alston‘s sophomore Amari story is FIRE, my friends!

Amari and the Night Brothers was one of my favorite middle grade books last year, and the Great Game is a worthy successor to that romp of a book.

There‘s excitement beyond measure here, and a cliffhanger ending that will have fans eagerly waiting for the next installment.

The kids are gonna love this one!

Amandajoy Ohhh! I preordered this! I‘m trying to decide if I let my stepdaughter read it first. 2y

This is the second installment in this series. It continues to have a wonderful young female hero (13 years old) and together with her friends they fight evil in the supernatural world. I loved the first book in the series and enjoyed this one, but I am definitely not the target audience. This is a great choice for the preteen fantasy reader and while girls will be drawn to it, we should encourage boys to pick it up well. I gave it 4/5 stars.
