A beloved classicwritten by a beloved Caldecott winneris lovelier than ever!Barbara Cooney's story of Alice Rumphius, who longed to travel the world, live in a house by the sea, and do something to make the world more beautiful, has a timeless quality that resonates with each new generation. The countless lupines that bloom along the coast of Maine are the legacy of the real Miss Rumphius, the Lupine Lady, who scattered lupine seeds everywhere she went. Miss Rumphius received the American Book Award in the year of publication. To celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of two-time Caldecott winner Barbara Cooney's best-loved book, the illustrations have been reoriginated, going back to the original art to ensure state-of-the-art reproduction of Cooney's exquisite artwork. The art for Miss Rumphius has a permanent home in the Bowdoin College Museum of Art.

As we drove up the coast of Maine, we saw lupines everywhere. Burst of purple, and sometimes even pink and white along the side of the road and then neighborhood gardens. They were absolutely beautiful, and I couldn‘t help but think of Miss Rumphius every time we saw them. This sweet bookstore, Fine Print, was in Kennebunkport.

Soubhiville This is such a sweet book. 💜💙 1y

Personally I would not use this in my future classroom, because not even I had the attention span to read the whole book. I do like the message it portrays, but children would not be able to sit through the whole thing, because it isn't as silly as the rest.

Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney, 1982. American Book Award Winner. I really enjoyed how heartwarming this book is. Miss Rumphius inspires the youth to make a positive impact in the world by finding something to make it “beautiful.” Miss Rumphius plants lupines around the world! This act is so little yet so powerful! This gives children an idea of the many things they could do to make the world around them beautiful!

Although I don't think young children would have a strong attention span for this book since it's longer, I still enjoyed the overlaying message of this book.

Miss Rumphuis is written by Barbara Cooney and won an American Book Award. It has beautiful illustrations and great story. It is somewhat hard to follow because it is a long book so I suggest reading this to older children. This book creates a journey for the children to go one and it would be easy to do other activities to link to this book.

This book was given the National Book Award for Children's Books. It was a good book that is enjoyable to read. However, nothing about was very exciting enough to possibly keep the kids attention throughout story time. the pictures were good and enjoyable to look at though with a great story line and set up!

Caldecott Winner "Miss Rumphius" (RF) is written and illustrated by Barbara Cooney. This colorful storybook tells about an adventurous young Alice who is determined to see the world and make it beautiful. She travels the globe and eventually grows up to be her hometown's "Lupine Lady", known for sowing beautiful flowers all over the seaside. Miss Rumphius makes for a great RA. #lae3414sp19

dayuso1 It's good to implement UDL strategy Promote Understanding Across Languages (2.4). The illustrations in this book are helpful, but students may need additional resources to understand the lengthy story. This is supported by ESOL 22 - giving students enough time for ELLs to respond to questions. 6y

Miss Rumphius by Barbara, American Book Award, Fiction. What a great book. This book is obviously memorable to me, I read this book for a summer reading going in to 2nd grade. This is a story of Miss Rumphius (told by her great niece), a little old lady, and her obligation to do three things: live by the sea, go to faraway places, and make the world a more stunning place.

Jenniferj11419 The language and illustrations in this book are truly amazing and memorable. Since I read this book as a summer reading I would like to make this book an IR (independent reading), I think students will grow a relationship with this book like I did, and students will remember this book as I do.
7y
Jenniferj11419 UDL principle 3.2 highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. Miss Rumphius has several relationships in this book that are very important to the plot that should be focused on. UDL principle 7.1 optimize individual choice and autonomy. Like I said before I want this book to be an IR, children can gain independence and confidence from this book. 7y

Jenniferj11419 ESOL strategies 6, continuously monitoring students comprehension; in this particular book there are many scenes and different relationships the reader needs to understand. 7y
Jenniferj11419 ESOL strategy 9, teach note taking strategies: T-lists, time line etc. is great because throughout this book you are going an adventure and finding out information about Miss Rumphius, so it would be a good idea to keep a time line as you are reading, may be a good summer reading project then. 7y
devin.s Great job Jennifer! This sounds like a great book. Keep up the good work! 7y

Miss Rumphuis by Barbara Clooney is a realistic fiction American book award winner that would be a great RA and S for your classroom library. Miss Rumphuis is the story about Alice Rumphius and her desire to do three things: live by the sea, go to far away places, and make the world a more beautiful place. This is a great story to share with students because it will encourage them to make the world a more beautiful place in their own way.

Aimeejett There are examples of where Alice goes and what she does in the story to give the students a better idea of how to make the world a more beautiful place. The UDL principle 1.3 offers alternatives for visual information. It is important for the students to see pictures of the things Alice is doing to make the world a more beautiful place. Having more visual pictures on the side will help the students see what she is doing. 7y
Aimeejett EL 15 reinforce the key ideas you present again and again. I think this EL strategy will be very helpful while reading his book because if you reinforce what Alice is doing to make the world a more beautiful place they will get a better idea. This website http://www.3rdgradethoughts.com/2012/11/i-heart-miss-rumphius.html?m=1 has a worksheet the students can do to describe how they will make the world a more beautiful place. #ucflae3414f17 7y
DrSpalding This was a yearly read aloud in my classroom. The story promotes the idea that we should leave a positive impact on the world. Remind me to show you some photos of real lupine plants in northern New York. They're beautiful. 7y
