Auschwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account
Auschwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account | Miklós Nyiszli
When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, they sent virtually the entire Jewish population to Auschwitz. A Hungarian Jew and a medical doctor, Dr. Miklos Nyiszli was spared from death for a grimmer fate: to perform "scientific research" on his fellow inmates under the supervision of the infamous "Angel of Death": Dr. Josef Mengele. Nyiszli was named Mengele's personal research pathologist. Miraculously, he survived to give this terrifying and sobering account of the terror of Auschwitz. This new Penguin Modern Classics edition contains an introduction by Richard Evans.

Recommended from a virtual tour I took via the Holocaust Education Center on Auschwitz this year.

AmyG Have you ever visited the Holocaust memorial in Michigan? I think it‘s in Farmington Hills. 1y
Sleepswithbooks I have - I went with my mom. I was able to hear a survivor speak. I bought some books (big surprise!). So many emotions. 1y
SlytherinBookLady I don‘t do nonfiction but I swear I‘d make an exception for this one. I‘m addicted to ww2/Holocaust books 1y

Not much can be added that hasn‘t already been said about the horrors of the Holocaust. This is a great read that gives a fascinating and unique perspective. A Jewish doctor and assistant to Josef Mengele gives his eye witness account. A wonderfully written and heart breaking story of a man‘s fight to survive.

I imagine when this book was originally published, in 1960, it was quite shocking. It still is, but I‘ve read so much about the Holocaust, that there wasn‘t a lot new, though there was some. I feel badly that I‘m not rating it higher. I didn‘t feel as much of an emotional connection (usually) as I thought I might. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin I‘m not sure if it was written in a more detached way; both as a doctor and just trying to force himself to get through it all to survive, I‘m sure he had to do his best to try to detach. He did say at the start of the book that he is a doctor, not a writer, so maybe that was part of it, as well (though it was definitely “readableâ€). Still, a worthwhile read, for sure. 6y

Nyiszli was taken to Auschwitz in 1944 and worked as a doctor under Joseph Mengele. It‘s the most heartbreaking #memoir I‘ve ever read. It‘s a difficult read but an important one. #maylovesclassics #litsyclassics

Nothing is scarier to me than the fact that something on this scale actually happened with such cold efficiency by people convinced they were right. #AllHallowsRead #ScaryRead #scarynonfiction

BooksRockMyWorld This was a deeply disturbing book, but one of those that I needed to read... :( 8y
Sue Sounds like a must read 8y
