Winter Is Coming
Winter Is Coming: Why Vladimir Putin and the Enemies of the Free World Must Be Stopped | Garry Kasparov
The ascension of Vladimir Putin--a former lieutenant colonel of the KGB--to the presidency of Russia in 1999 should have been a signal that the country was headed away from democracy. Yet in the intervening years--as America and the world's other leading powers have continued to appease him--Putin has grown not only into a dictator but a global threat. With his vast resources and nuclear weapons, Putin is at the center of a worldwide assault on political liberty. For Garry Kasparov, none of this is news. He has been a vocal critic of Putin for over a decade, even leading the pro-democracy opposition to him in the farcical 2008 Presidential election. Yet years of seeing his Cassandra-like prophecies about Putin's intentions fulfilled have left Kasparov with the realization of a darker truth: Putin's Russia, like ISIS or Al Qaeda, defines itself in opposition to the free countries of the world. He is still fighting the Cold War, even as Americans have first moved beyond it, and over time, forgotten its lessons. Lest we be drawn into another prolonged conflict, Kasparov now urges a forceful stand--diplomatic and economic--against him. For as long as the world's powerful democracies continue to recognize and negotiate with Putin, he can maintain credibility in his home country. He faces few strong enemies within his country, so meaningful opposition must come from abroad. Argued with the force of Kasparov's world-class intelligence, conviction, and hopes for his home country, Winter is Coming is an unmistakable call to action against a threat we've ignored for too long.

I saved this as a book I wanted to read back in 2018. Never got to it. But as I was reviewing my Goodreads history this book and its title gave me the chills. The U.S. has been invaded by Putin and most people don‘t realize it yet.

DogMomIrene My husband has a bunch of Russia/Putin books, but I‘m not sure he has this one. Will be checking out shelves because this sounds right on target for his TBR. 1mo
Suet624 @DogMomIrene I hope you can find it. 1mo
sarahbarnes Chills indeed. 1mo
DogMomIrene @Suet624 We‘ve got it. I actually created a shelf for China & Russia books. He keeps buying more on these topics, though, so each country may get its own shelf. 1mo

I agree with Kasparov - Putin is dictator, threat to Russian and the world, I support and admire Kasparov‘s fight for democracy ... but this book is just spilling hatred that he feels towards Putin. I could be okay with that, he hate him with reason, but unfortunately I can‘t overlook how uncritical and forgetful is he, especially to the Yeltsin. This book was for me disappointment, between so-so and pan. If you are looking for book about ... 👇

Simona ... current Russian politics/Putin with thoughtful, analytical content, this book is not for you. #nFnov 5y
BarbaraBB Yeltsin as a role model? Weird 😊 5y
Simona @BarbaraBB Kasparov‘s world is black or white and so are people mentioned in this book ... with one exception - Yeltsin. He is for some reasons in gray area. I wouldn‘t say ‘role model‘, but he is depicted way more softer than the rest mentioned in the book. Kasparov some how forgot Yeltsin roll in Chechnya, his connection with Miloševič, oligarchy started blooming under Yeltsin, Putin was handpicked by Yeltsin ... 5y
BarbaraBB Exactly. I think he was internationally received as a hero because he was the first president of Russia but a lot went wrong. He was no leader at all. Not as scary as Putin though 5y

It is clear from reading this book that Kasparov is no fan of Vladimir Putin and that he longs for freedom for his homeland. The book is a rebuke to leaders of the West for consistently capitulating to Putin and giving him the upper hand. Kasparov spreads his criticism to many countries and to both GW Bush and Obama. He warns that expecting Putin to play by Western rules is playing right into his hands. (Continued in comments)

Melkyl I believe his warning was correct considering Putin‘s brazen interference in the US elections. I can only imagine his frustration now that the US has a president who is tied financially to Russia and who appears to be on very friendly terms with Putin. 7y
Twocougs He‘s an interesting author! 7y
rjsthumbelina This sounds interesting! I am currently listening to the tagged book, also about Putin. Talks a lot so far about how the "Russian Reset" under the Obama administration was an utter failure 7y
Melkyl @Twocougs I agree. I didn‘t really know he was an author until I saw this book. 7y
Melkyl @rjsthumbelina That book does sound interesting and similar. The “Russian Reset” is discussed as a total failure in this book too. 7y

This book shows how Russia now will not just impact your now but also your future. Along with Bill Browder's Red Notice this is reading that should be completed by those of us concerned. References to chess were appreciated. Kasparov doesn't mince words and critiques each world leader on the basis of his/her actions, no holding back. a very human rights focused read that highlights how much is at stake - our very American (aka "free") way of life.

Excellent look at Putin's rise in Russia. Kasparov pulls no punches in pointing fingers at the West, especially the US, in failing to recognize that Putin is a dictator. While the book is a couple of years old, I can easily see how much bolder Putin has gotten. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The author leaves no doubt on how he feels about President Obama's foreign policy. So far, it seems that only President Reagan got things right in his eyes. I do think, though, that it's easier to find fault after the fact than while in the middle of a crises.

Bostonmomx2 I LOVE those last 2 statements. Taking a seriously hard ass stance is very unpopular with one side but sometimes it HAS to be done. Especially if we want our country strong and safe! 8y

And the the book also includes George W. Bush as a leader welcoming Putin. If this book had been written a little later, I believe Donald Trump would also be in that list. I'm only 7% in, and I'm horrified.

Dang you Amazon! Another one on my to-read list is on sale today. Yay it's on sale, Boo you are killing my budget!! But you know I'll spend it, especially considering the current Russian news stories, every day lately.

Laura317 I am blaming you for my credit card bill. 😂😂😂 Actually, this was in my tbr already. I can't wait to see what you think. Putin is scary. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Laura317 Yes he is, and growing up in the 80's when it was the "Evil Empire" & the enemy in every movie, it blows my mind to see how many people are expressing lots of love/goodwill for close relations with Russia. I would have thought that no matter what party all Americans would be aghast that they even might have interfered in any way, small or large, in our politics. Sorry for the credit card bill... I usually just add all mine to my... 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Laura317 ...virtual TBR list on Goodreads, and then I keep my eyes open if show up at the library or on an Amazon sale list. Although I do cave and buy a few at full price too. Lately so many have been on Amazon sale, that's starting to add up to a big chunk of change too. 8y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Laura317 I have The Man Without A Face on hold at the library, I've been on the list for awhile and there are still a ton of people ahead of me....so it's obviously a popular title at the moment. 8y
DGRachel I grabbbed this one on sale since you posted it. It was on my TBR, too, but can't resist the sale. I completely agree about not understanding how people can be anything other than horrified by the potential Russian interference in our government. I was born in 1975, so maybe I remember enough of the Cold War to still consider Russia the enemy. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DGRachel Same here, born in 1973! But strangely it's not the young ones who seem cool with Russia, it's those older than me... who had the space race and the Cuban Missile Crisis in their childhood. We must have just been born in the right period where all that Stop, Drop, and Cover was still in schools, my school had a bomb shelter in it, and Red Dawn (the original movie) scared us like crazy. Plus of course Reagan was President, there ... 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...was still an East Berlin and East Germany. The Berlin Wall fell when I was in a High School and the soviet block countries not long after. So to me, and maybe our generation....as soon as Russia starting pushing into the thawing arctic & planting flags, then "annexed" Crimea, my personal radar went on alert, fiddling in our election and trying in France's, all had me very worried. Talks about not supporting NATO now, very scary. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DGRachel I remember even thinking when we retired all our space shuttles, and were going to rely on Russia to get to the International Space Station, even thinking then...this is a mistake, and those that fought the space race would be livid. 8y
DGRachel My mom lived through the Cuban missile crisis and is just as upset about the Russian meddling as I am, but I do find it fascinating that older generations aren't as concerned. Are they the ones who are blindly supporting Trump, or is there something else at play? 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DGRachel I wish I knew, I just don't understand it. My mom is with us too, but my dad is a Huge Trump supported....he's a great self made businessman you know (not really), but yes....I definitely believe the fake planted news has effected his outlook on the world, the stories he posts on FB from sources I've never heard of are crazy, but yet it's the main stream credentialed journalist who are the fake news spreaders. So that part about.... 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DGRachel ... Russian influence I totally get. But I'm starting to wonder if the influencing the election ran even deeper and longer than we realize yet. Because my dad was always a conservative Republican, but the party he's with now doesn't even believe those things anymore.....Reagan Republicans where very strong on Russia, I remember when they were the strong party on International Relations, and the Dems were weak there.... but that seems 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ....To have totally flipped on its head, because the foreign policy now seems very off to me. And I honestly still think there was some strong racist undercurrents there, My dad still buys all the birther nonsense because he saw a video by 1 expert saying his birth certificate was a fake on some kooky website....it's almost like all those "I'm not really racist" people fell for those fake stories very easily and then kept following those outlets. 8y
Laura317 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DGRachel I was born in 1964. I can remember how Russia was (still is to me) the evil empire. Not the people, but the leaders. Ignoring Russia's influence in our election process makes absolutely no sense. Rant over. Now I have yet ANOTHER book to add to my tbr list. Sigh. 8y
minkyb I sympathize with your kindle budget woes! 8y

Riveting. I finished the book more alarmed about Putin, Western complacency & the threat beyond Russia than when I started. Kasparov is fascinating & has a chess world champion's eye on things, & first-hand experience in Russian politics - a unique position. He sees where Western leadership failure will end up. The thinking person's 'tells it like it is' figure, opinions are strong but well-founded, the message is urgent. A must-read.
