The Blood Trials: A Novel | N. E. Davenport
8 posts | 10 read | 4 to read
Blending fantasy and science fiction, N. E. Davenports fast-paced, action-packed debut kicks off a duology of loyalty and rebellion, in which a young Black woman must survive deadly trials in a racist and misogynistic society to become an elite warrior. Its all about blood. The blood spilled between the Republic of Mareen and the armies of the Blood Emperor long ago. The blood gifts of Mareens deadliest enemies. The blood that runs through the elite War Houses of Mareen, the rulers of the Tribunal dedicated to keeping the republic alive. The blood of the former Legatus, Verne Amari, murdered. For his granddaughter, Ikenna, the only thing steady in her life was the man who had saved Mareen. The man who had trained her in secret, not just in martial skills, but in harnessing the blood gift that coursed through her. Who trained her to keep that a secret. But now there are too many secrets, and with her grandfather assassinated, Ikenna knows two things: that only someone on the Tribunal could have ordered his death, and that only a Praetorian Guard could have carried out that order. Bent on revenge as much as discovering the truth, Ikenna pledges herself to the Praetorian Trialsa brutal initiation that only a quarter of the aspirants survive. She subjects herself to the racism directed against her half-Khanaian heritage and the misogyny of a society that cherishes progeny over prodigy, all while hiding a power thatif found outwould subject her to executionor worse. Ikenna is willing to risk it all because she needs to find out who murdered her grandfatherand then she needs to kill them. Mareen has been at peace for a long time Ikenna joining the Praetorians is about to change all that. Magic and technology converge in the first part of this stunning debut duology, where loyalty to oneselfand ones bloodis more important than anything.

I really, really wanted to like this book. I love a brutal education/hazing situation. Unfortunately, the heroine drove me up a wall. Ikenna was always angry and itching for a fight. Even when no one was trying to start one. Also, the love tension thing was not there for this couple. I couldn't handle another 4.5 hours of reading the same thing over and over again. #hailthebail

DNFing for now. Reading a little young at the beginning and I‘m not in the mood for a military school book. I may revisit later.

Dystopian YA where young adults have to survive deadly trials to become warriors. Ikenna has another mission though, and it‘s to find out who killed her grandfather. Liked the audiobook version of this one, though occasionally Ikenna‘s impulsiveness got old. But she‘s grieving and angry and mistrustful of pretty much everyone around her, so her stress outburst also make sense. Definitely reading book two. Curious about how things will turn out.

A sci-fi fantasy set in a futuristic world where several wars results in a segregated and elitist society. Ikenna, a bipoc, kickass warrior enlists in a deadly gauntlet competition in order to join the government's elite soldier guard but is met with constant racism and misogyny. However, she has an ulterior motive in solving a family member's murder, uncovering a conspiracy, and developing a burgeoning power.

Book #19 of the year: “The Blood Trials” by N.E. Davenport

It is, unsurprisingly, bloody. This YA fiction follows the just-turned-18 Amari as she deals with the loss of her grandfather, the bigotry of her nation, a gift from a goddess, and impending war. It‘s good, if a little long.

I cannot sit still. On one hand I‘m bouncing up and down in outrage. And on the other hand I think I‘m reading into a enemy‘s to lovers romance that doesn‘t exist. Help. How do I stop reading into it? Is it even viable? Or am I just falling for yet another villain?😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫
