Never Cross a Vampire
Never Cross a Vampire | Stuart M. Kaminsky
3 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
The stakes are life and death when Bela Lugosi is threatened in this affectionate parody of the hard-boiled private-eye genre (The New York Times). 1942: In the basement of a crumbling Los Angeles movie palace, five vampires crowd around Bela Lugosi. They should not frighten the fading horror icon, who found worldwide fame as Dracula, for these are only wannabesdiehard fans who get their kicks dressing up as bloodsuckers. But Lugosi is terrified, because he knows that one of these crackpots has been making threats against his life. Their fangs may be plastic, but their lethal intentions are all too real. For protection, Lugosi hires Hollywood private eye Toby Peters, whos splitting his time between this case and a job for his old employers: the Warner brothers. A Hollywood murder has been linked to one of the studios star screenwriters: the brilliant novelist and violent drunk, William Faulkner. To his horror, Peters finds a connection between the two cases. To get Faulkner off the hook, hell have to find out who wants to close the coffin lid on Dracula. With shades of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett Edgar Awardwinning author Stuart Kaminskys 1940s Hollywood PI is once again cracking wise and saving celebrities from psychos (The San Diego Union-Tribune).

Late last night I finished the 1st book for #OutstandingOctober - 7 hours read so far. The series is set in Hollywood during the 1940s and always has some connection to films. This time Toby needs to solve a mystery involving Bela Lugosi and William Faulkner. #Scarathlon2021 #TeamSlaughter (15 pts) #Scarathon #BookSpin #SpookoweenReadathon #Wickedathon @Andrew65 @Clwojick @4thhouseontheleft @TheSpineView @StayCurious

Book 5 in a series and of course I read no prior books. I still enjoyed it. Toby Peters is a Private Detective in Hollywood. This book takes place over a few days in January 1942 and he's looking into threats on Bela Lugosi and trying to get William Faulkner off a murder charge. Nothing groundbreaking, but fun to visit old Hollywood. Toby is broke and his body is breaking down, but he keeps at it. Might read others in series if I find them.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Read the last 75 pages for #NovelNovember and for #crushtherush . @TheAromaofBooks This book was my #doublespin for September that I never got around to reading then. 4y

I'm waiting on Covid test results. I have no symptoms & my guy is negative, but I had contact with the same infected person so I'm waiting it out at the hotel where I work. I paused my reading for some wine & a stretch then turned on Smackdown. My favorite wrestler popped up tonight and now I'm bummed I don't have a Highlander romance here with me. Oh well, back to my pulpy mystery.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Thank you all!! I'm about 27 hours post test and still no results...not that I'm counting! 😀 I still feel fine so I'm trying to enjoy the me time to get bookish things done since I can't do anything about the dirty dishes or laundry at home. I'm pacing myself with the wine. @robinb @smrloomis @LazyOwl @SassyBookworm @Ast_Arslan @JessClark78 @eeclayton @Annie1215 @LibraryBelle @DaveGreen7777 @CoffeeK8 @Bookwormjillk @velvetfur 4y
