Grape, Olive, Pig
Grape, Olive, Pig: Deep Travels Through Spain's Food Culture | Matt Goulding
9 posts | 3 read | 11 to read
The author of Rice, Noodle, Fish now celebrates the delectable and sensuous culture and cuisine of Spain with this beautifully illustrated food-driven travel guide filled with masterful narration, insider advice, and nearly 200 full-color photos. Grape, Olive, Pig is a deeply personal exploration of Spain, a country where eating and living are inextricably linked. Crafted in the "refreshing" (Associated Press), "inspirational" (Publishers Weekly) and "impeccably observed" (Eater.com) style of the acclaimed Rice, Noodle, Fish, and written with the same evocative voice of the award-winning magazine Roads & Kingdoms, this magnificent gastronomic travel companion takes you through the key regions of Spain as youve never seen them before. Matt Goulding introduces you to the sprawling culinary and geographical landscape of his adoptive home, and offers an intimate portrait of this multifaceted country, its remarkable people, and its complex history. Fall in love with Barcelonas tiny tapas bars and modernist culinary temples. Explore the movable feast of small plates and late nights in Madrid. Join the three-thousand-year-old hunt for Bluefin tuna off the coast of Cadiz, then continue your seafood journey north to meet three sisters who risk their lives foraging the gooseneck barnacle, one of Spains most treasured ingredients. Delight in some of the worlds most innovative and avant-garde edible creations in San Sebastian, and then wash them down with cider from neighboring Asturias. Sample the worlds finest acorn-fed ham in Salamanca, share in the traditions of cave-dwelling shepherds in the mountains beyond Granada, and debate what constitutes truly authentic paella in Valencia. Grape, Olive, Pig reveals hidden gems and enduring delicacies from across this extraordinary country, contextualizing each meal with the stories behind the food in a cultural narrative complemented by stunning color photography. Whether youve visited Spain or have only dreamed of bellying up to its tapas bars, Grape, Olive, Pig will wake your imagination, rouse your hunger, and capture your heart.

I love the simplicity of design on this one. Also, it's closer to square than most books and has a really smooth mat finish that makes it a pleasure to hold and feel. The inside is beautiful too. #7days7covers #covercrush

If a book is going to make you salivate, it will be a good dinner companion, right? Of course, now I'm not hungry but I'm considering hopping the next flight to Spain!

There is no way to walk away from this book without craving the food & drink of Spain & wanting to be there. Goulding's love for the history, people & especially the food pour out of every page. Descriptive writing & gorgeous B&W photography in this fascinating foodie travelogue. Paired w/a merienda (afternoon snack) of Toast with Olive Oil & Chocolate, sweet red wine & Marcona almonds for my blog book tour review-link below. 📚🍴❤️ #foodandbooks

Day28 #photoadaynov16 #currentlyreading I usually have at least 4 books going at once & I'm comfortable w/ that, but this month I have jumped around too much & can't seem to settle. Here are my 6 I'm currently reading. I have fast approaching due dates on 2 library e-books & 2 from NetGalley I've been dragging on forever... The Graveyard Book is audio & I'm backed up there too. Luckily I'm 3/4 done w/ Grape Olive Pig for review tomorrow. Yikes! 😬

TheLondonBookworm Ooooh what's the Emma retelling like? I read the Northanger Abbey by Val McDermid but wasn't over whelmed, then again I never much liked that story in the first place whereas I love Emma! 8y
DebinHawaii @TheLondonBookworm I am only about 1/3 of the way into it but I am liking it so far-it's fun. I read Eligible, the (P&P) and Sense & Sensibility retellings & liked Eligible the best. I bought a copy of Northanger Abbey but have not read it yet. 👍📚 8y

I should probably be eating manchego cheese and olives for tonight's book about Spain's food culture I am reading for a book tour review next week, but it's a popcorn kind of night. I had some leftover spiced compound butter (cumin, turmeric, garlic salt & a bit of cinnamon) and it makes this bowl of popcorn especially delicious. #readingsnack #fridaynight 🍿📚❤️

Tav I am in Barcelona RIGHT NOW! 8y
KarenUK That sounds delicious... 8y
BethFishReads Oh I have that on my list for December -- can't wait to read 8y

Jinjer I would've never thought to use a compound butter!!!! Brilliant! 8y
DebinHawaii @Tav I am jealous! 👍😀 @KarenUK @UwannaPublishme @Jinjer It was a spur of the moment thing when I wanted butter on my air-popped corn & saw it in the fridge. It was so good--I'll definitely make more butter & do it again! 🍿👍 @BethFishReads I am enjoying it so far! I'm sure you'll like it. 📚👍 8y
BethFishReads @DebinHawaii phew. I trust your opinion 8y

I am on page 5 and this guy has already written about 3 experiences that I can completely relate to, this one chief among them: when an amazing meal triggers an existential breakdown! 🍴😱
