I bought this for my daughter but ended up reading it myself. Coincidentally, the story is set right around the time my own family came to California. It‘s something that is so important, I think, to not only understand but to feel and to see that we, too, are a part of the American story, for all the good and bad that entails. This story was beautiful, both visually and emotionally, and it‘s wonderful to be able to read stories like this.
Mei is a 13-yr-old Chinese American girl who helps out her father, a cook, at a logging camp. Inspired by the tales of Paul Bunyan, she reimagines them as the Legends of Auntie Po, sort of a guardian figure of the loggers, and tells these made up stories to entertain the workers and to help cope with the difficulties she faces. This is a sweet story about friendship, tradition, and the power of ⬇️

I flew through this month‘s #LMPBC Group A pick. Phenomenal artwork! This one has a lot to say, and it‘s geared perfectly to MG which isn‘t always an easy balance for authors to find with tough topics. #LGBTGBookBingo #AnimalFriend #BBRC Middle Grade Western
@LibrarianRyan the books for this round seem to have stacked up, so I‘m going to wait and read Beetle & the Hollowbones too before I drop this in the mail.
