Little Witch Hazel
Little Witch Hazel: A Year in the Forest | Phoebe Wahl
15 posts | 11 read | 7 to read
An earthy and beautiful collection of four stories that celebrate the seasons, nature, and life, from award-winning author-illustrator Phoebe Wahl. Little Witch Hazel is a tiny witch who lives in the forest, helping creatures big and small. She's a midwife, an intrepid explorer, a hard worker and a kind friend. In this four-season volume, Little Witch Hazel rescues an orphaned egg, goes sailing on a raft, solves the mystery of a haunted stump and makes house calls to fellow forest dwellers. But when Little Witch Hazel needs help herself, will she get it in time? Little Witch Hazel is a beautiful ode to nature, friendship, wild things and the seasons, that only Phoebe Wahl could create: an instant classic and a book that readers will pore over time and time again.

Photos from our Saturday walk. We picked chestnuts: not only were they pretty, shiny and pristine, with not a maggot in sight and hardly any mud on them, but they were also delicious.
And Little Witch Hazel is a fantastic book for children. Grandkid loves the stories & I like the underpinning “hippy“ outlook on life - kind, understanding and tolerant (including of leg hair on women 😅)

Bought this as a gift for one of my nieces last year and was very tempted to keep it for myself. The art is wonderful and the story really charming. I was enchanted.

Little Witch Hazel is who I want to be when I grow up, a chubby lady with hairy legs and a big pointy red hat living in a cozy little house in the forest helping her fellow creatures. There are four stories in the book, one for each season. They all evoke the season so viscerally. The illustrations are sooo beautiful and full of tiny gem details (like a little elf breastfeeding a baby floating on a leaf in a pond).

Anyone else on the Storygraph app?

I just opened my account! caseythecanadianlesbrarian is my username as usual.

Let's be bookish friends on a book tracking platform that isn't owned by Amazon (*cough*Goodreads*cough*) and was founded by a Black woman!

Here I am: https://app.thestorygraph.com/profile/caseythecanadianlesbrarian

Clare-Dragonfly Sent a friend request! I still don‘t know what to do with friends there but I like having my Litsy friends collected there as well 😆 3y
fredamans Added you. 3y
Lindy I created a storygraph account a couple of months ago and then just felt lost there. I use Goodreads to track my reading, not for the social aspect, and I know I can do that in storygraph too, but it seemed like too much effort to learn a new system. Maybe I will go back and try again because, like you, I prefer to avoid Amazon. 3y
Kitta Added you! I‘m continuing to use both because while I like the features of Goodreads, I dislike Amazon so I‘m trying to move over but it‘s hard to break away! The graphs on storygraph are great though. 3y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Clare-Dragonfly yeah I'm still figuring everything out! 3y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Lindy the effort of learning a new system kept me from trying it out for a while! 3y
khooliha Sent a request! I'm not super social on any book social media (Litsy is my most outgoing), but I do love that Storygraph will make me a pie chart whenever I ask. 3y
Bookzombie I like Storygraph. The only thing I wish it had was the the library extension so I still research books on Goodreads some. Sending friend‘s request now. 🙂 3y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @khooliha yeah the charts are so cool! 3y
janeycanuck Just sent you a request. I‘m still running my Goodreads in parallel to StoryGraph because I can‘t track wishlist books but there‘s some good stuff going - I particularly enjoy the recommendations engine! 3y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @janeycanuck I think I'll be using them both for the foreseeable future too! 3y

I bought this book for my kid and we love it so far! (It has four stories, one for each season, and we've just read the spring one). Beautiful illustrations and whimsical fairytale like.

Phoebe Wahl is one of my favorite artists & writers. Everything she creates is so full of love & weirdness & whimsy. I loved Little Witch Hazel with her hairy legs & her odd neighbors & her grumpy attitude & her big, caring heart. I loved reluctantly, lazy summer days & spooky fall evenings. I loved full circle moments of care in the spring & winter. This is so dear & lovely. Grown ups should read pictures books forever.

Author/illustrator Phoebe Wahl follows the eponymous Little Witch Hazel through the four seasons in this delightful picture storybook, depicting a woodland world full of enchantment and friendship. I sought this one out (and had it recommended to me) largely on the strength of my interest in witchy picture-books, but having now read it, I think Hazel is less of a witch, in the traditional sense, and more of an elf or woodland sprite.

This charming illustrated collection follows the titular Little Witch Hazel through the four seasons as she minds a wayward egg, takes a pleasure cruise on a raft, investigates a haunted stump, and heals the ailments of her neighbors. Phoebe Wahl‘s illustrations are just enchanting and your time in Little Witch Hazel‘s world will warm you from head to heart to toe—all while making you fall a little more in love with our own world, in every season.

Working on my TBR for #Screamathon 2021. 🖤

I‘ve got another mini-list of alternates but I think the 8 pictured will be my core.

monalyisha This one might not fit seamlessly into the prompt…but there‘s no proof as yet that mermaids exist, & I‘m sure it‘ll expose some societal horrors. So, I‘m stretching. 😉 (edited) 3y
