Cook, Eat, Repeat
Cook, Eat, Repeat: Ingredients, Recipes, and Stories | Nigella Lawson
8 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Food, for me, is a constant pleasure: I like to think greedily about it, reflect deeply on it, learn from it; it provides comfort, inspiration, meaning, and beautyMore than just a mantra, cook, eat, repeat is the story of my life. Cook, Eat, Repeat is a delicious and delightful combination of recipes intertwined with narrative essays about food, all written in Nigella Lawsons engaging and insightful prose. Whether asking what is a recipe? or declaring death to the guilty pleasure, Nigella brings her wisdom about food and life to the fore while sharing new recipes that readers will want to return to again and again. Within these chapters are more than a hundred new recipes for all seasons and tastes from Burnt Onion and Eggplant Dip to Chicken with Garlic Cream Sauce; from Beef Cheeks with Port and Chestnuts to Ginger and Beetroot Yogurt Sauce. Those with a sweet tooth will delight in desserts including Rhubarb and Custard Trifle; Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake; and Cherry and Almond Crumble. The recipes I write come from my life, my home, says Nigella, and in Cook, Eat, Repeat she reveals the rhythms and rituals of her kitchen through recipes that make the most of her favorite ingredients, with inspiration for family dinners, vegan feasts, and solo suppers, as well as new ideas for cooking during the holidays.

Loved having this read to me by Nigella whilst following along in print. Her enthusiasm for food is infectious & her passion for pleasure, adaptation & full flavour. Each chapter begins with rumination on a theme, then chat recipes, and then the recipes themselves. She swops things in and out with availability and seasons and sent me back into the kitchen excited to see what was in the fridge! Also appreciated her contentions to ‘solo supper‘.

I‘m really enjoy this - I‘m listening to the audio and reading along. Never done this before with a cook book and it‘s a really a lovely experience. Highly recommend it.

LeahBergen That sounds fun! 9mo

I was listening to a podcast this week that talked about Immersive Reading - Reading a physical book whilst simultaneously listening to the audio. I‘m going to give it a go. I picked this one because who doesn‘t like the idea of Nigella talking about food she loves!

julesG I love immersive reading. 9mo
Mitch @julesG I‘ve not tried it before. But I have fond memories of being read to as a child following along with the book. 9mo
Aimeesue I do this a lot since the Covid lockdowns wrecked my concentration. Didn‘t realize it had a name! 9mo
KAO I have done this a few times when I read German mysteries! It helps me with language practice as well. The only trouble is when the audio version skips a paragraph (or more), so I have to hit pause and read what was skipped. 9mo

I made the fish stew from COOK, EAT, REPEAT for supper. It was good, but I dunno if I WILL repeat it. I kept comparing it to Keralan fish curry, which I like much better and which takes waaaaay less time to make.

BiblioLitten I had the Kerala fish curry yesterday. If I got the right fish, I would make it at home but for now I‘ll order takeout. 3y
xicanti @BiblioLitten I try to keep a bunch of basa in my freezer for all my fish curry-making needs. 3y

I reserved and then borrowed this from the local library as I wanted to see if it was worth buying. I should‘ve known better.....I‘m halfway through and I want to cook just about all of the recipes!! I love Nigella! Her recipes are easy to follow and always work out. I‘m adding this book to my ‘To buy‘ list.

I don‘t know that I‘ve gone thru Lawson‘s other cookbooks, but I did like her show that was filmed at home where she made home/family style food that was quick and easy. (From what I recall.) This book is more “cheffy” style with ingredients not commonly found here in my local area and in general a tad more complicated. Weekend cooking maybe. I only found this one recipe I‘d like to try.

Lots of essay writing included in this one too.

CarolynM I enjoy the chatty style of her recipes, but it can be annoying when you just want straightforward directions🙂 In spite of the title, my favourite of hers is 4y
Tamra @CarolynM I will check it out from the library, so thank you for the suggestion! I like food essays too, but interestingly now that you mention it, not so much with recipes. How weird! 4y
SamAnne She can be....a bit too precious. But I do like her Domestic Goddess cookbook. 4y
