The Man Who Died Twice
The Man Who Died Twice: A Thursday Murder Club Mystery | Richard Osman
218 posts | 212 read | 7 reading | 76 to read
The second gripping novel in the #1 internationally bestselling Thursday Murder Club series, the first of which Kate Atkinson called "A little beacon of pleasure in the midst of the gloom. . . SUCH FUN!" Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahimthe Thursday Murder Clubare still riding high off their recent real-life murder case and are looking forward to a bit of peace and quiet at Coopers Chase, their posh retirement village. But they are out of luck. An unexpected visitoran old pal of Elizabeths (or perhaps more than just a pal?)arrives, desperate for her help. He has been accused of stealing diamonds worth millions from the wrong men and hes seriously on the lam. Then, as night follows day, the first body is found. But not the last. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim are up against a ruthless murderer who wouldnt bat an eyelid at knocking off four septuagenarians. Can our four friends catch the killer before the killer catches them? And if they find the diamonds, too? Well, wouldnt that be a bonus? You should never put anything beyond the Thursday Murder Club. Richard Osman is back with everyones favorite mystery-solving quartet, and the second installment of The Thursday Murder Club series is just as clever and warm as the firstan unputdownable, laugh-out-loud pleasure of a read.

This was just as fun as the first one. I liked seeing more backstory on some of the characters. The side characters were just as great as the main four and gave the feeling of catching up with old friends.

I already liked the first case of the Thursday Murder Club. Their second case is even better. I thought it was even funnier than the first one. And I liked that the story focused more on the life of the members of the club. I am looking forward to read the next one.

Ruthiella These books definitely improve upon further reading. I think it‘s a combination of me becoming more attached to the characters and the author‘s skills getting better with practice. 3mo
janeycanuck I second what @Ruthiella said. They just keep getting better! 2mo

I‘ve been on a mystery kick lately, and while “cozy” mysteries aren‘t normally my thing, I really enjoy this series for its unique group of protagonists of seniors in a retirement community who may be older, but certainly are not doddering. The characters are all wonderfully drawn (particularly Elizabeth and Joyce) but all the characters, even the supporting ones, are unique and add to the fun. Can‘t wait to read more.

The Thursday Murder Club is back! Someone from Elizabeth‘s past arrives at Cooper‘s Chase asking for help and Ibrahim is attacked. The clubbers are on the job to find justice for their friend, solve some murders and cash in on a financial windfall. The characters are well written, the plot twisty and the friendships stronger. The narrator, Lesley Mann breathes life into Osman‘s delightful novel. 4/5 ⭐️ for our witty clubbers.

Tagged was my first book I finished in 2024 - right after midnight. It was actually the reason I stayed up because I was enjoying it so much! So I definitely recommend this series, waiting for the third one to become available from my library. 😁

This was an absolute delight! Continuing the misadventures of an odd group of friends, which includes several retirees, some police and a hot guy with questionable morales. The mystery is fun and them unraveling it is so much fun. Great first read for 2024! 5⭐️

Book 2 in the "Thursday Murder Club" series about crime-solving pensioners, was entertainment for Mrs swynn and I during our long holiday drives. It's hard to find stories we both enjoy, so I'm happy to report that TMC was a hit, and we would "read" another one together.

CoffeeNBooks I loved this entire series! 10mo

My reading goal this year had been 90 books (Actually it had been 25, then 50, then 75…I‘ve surpassed my expectations and thrown myself into reading again) and this book will get me to my goal. I loved the first instalment of the Thursday Murder Club, and cannot wait for more. YouTube has some wonderful interviews Richard Osman had when promoting these books and it‘s made me thirsty to read them all. Will let you know how I get on! #RichardOsman

This series just gets better and better. In this novel we find out a lot more about Elizabeth‘s background and how she is still pretty much top of her game. Dead men come back from the dead, spies, intrigue, diamonds, murder, mayhem, plots, triple crosses, what more do you want? It‘s probably in there. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am so glad any time I stumble upon a new series that I love ❤️. This is the 2nd book in the Thursday Murder Club series, and it was just as charming as the first. The characters and their dynamics together are so lovable, and the mystery is always satisfying (although I did correctly call this one early). I already picked up the next 2 books!
And this post catches me up on my finished reads over the last five or six weeks ✔️.

JMPemberton I loved the first one and have reserved the man who died twice from the library. I just love a cozy mystery. 12mo

A fairly easy start to my holiday reading. It was a bday present two yrs ago and I was in no rush to get to it but as with book 1 this is a fairly gentle crime story in which the 4 pensioners combine to solve a mystery. Here, Elizabeth (ex mi5 operative) is confronted by her past and some disappearing diamonds. It is an easy read, but the series is probably too gentle for my liking. It's still definitely an easy holiday read.

Centique I like listening to these as audiobooks because they are quite gentle and sweet. For some reason i like that more in an audiobook, while fast, tense books i prefer to read in print 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
andrew61 @Centique I haven't tried any audio books yet Paula. I think these would be a perfect start. Maybe book 3. 1y

This was one of no more than five fiction books available for sale at the Denpasar airport and I was desperate. Admittedly, one of the other books was Sorrow and Bliss, which I loved. But still a pretty poor showing.
Anyway, I would not have picked it up under other circumstances but I found I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters were very funny and it was a lovely read. I will be returning to the first.

rwmg Oh dear. Last time I went through Denpasar airport (admittedly pre-pandemic) there was quite a large, reasonably well-stocked branch of Smiths. 1y

Elizabeth's ex-husband seeks her help when he comes under suspicion of stealing diamonds worth £20,000,000.

An excellent combination of thrills in the story and laughs in the characters' interactions. A bout of insomnia made this a very quick read.

My library hold came available for book two of this series & I couldn‘t resist reading it this weekend. I think I enjoyed it even more than the first—I adore this group of seniors & their friends (especially Bogan)! The author does an excellent job of combining humor, heart & a few thrills into an entertaining & absorbing mystery with multiple twists that kept me guessing. I can‘t wait for my hold on book three to come in!

5-3-23: My 46th finished book of 2023! The Thursday Murder Club is back in Book 2 and this one was a lot of fun! So much happens and the septuagenarians don‘t miss a thing! Murder, diamonds, the mafia, mistaken identities, and Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron, Ibrahim and Bogdan are on the case, or cases. When an unexpected visitor, someone from Elizabeth‘s past, sets everything into motion, it‘s up to the club to sort it out. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣4️⃣6️⃣

Second book in the series, even better than the first.
Fun, funny, clever and touching.
These books feel like a cheerful battle waged against ageism, all the assumptions people make about, underestimations of, senior citizens, all the while giving these older characters rich inner and outer lives that are more than just busting simple stereotypes. 1/3

Robotswithpersonality Does not shy away from the harsher realities, either. Still heart-rending to read moments of vulnerability among elderly people: living with dementia, wrestling with the frailty that old age can bring.
What got me in this one most, though, was the gentle but honest look at loneliness, which can be experienced at any age. 2/3
2y
Robotswithpersonality Mystery appreciably twisty, but didn't feel quite as convoluted or absurd as the first one, more tightly plotted, an improvement.
So eager to read the next in the series! 3/3

Being reunited with the four loveable characters felt cosy and familiar, like slipping on a favourite item of clothing. Just as in the first book, this was full of dry humour, with sharp and witty insights. Funny without ever being ‘try hard‘.

This was a lot more action packed than the first, and quite busy at times. Still hugely enjoyable and looking forward to reading the third.

A physical book for a change. It was a Christmas present in 2021.

Every bit as entertaining and charming as the first book, and it was so nice to spend time with Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim again (not to mention the great cast of supporting characters) Elizabeth‘s ex-husband, and fellow MI5 spy has stolen diamonds worth millions from an international arms dealer, and he wants her help. Distracted by her current husband‘s increasing dementia, Elizabeth is not at the top of her game; her friends step up.
