Bravey: Chasing Dreams, Befriending Pain, and Other Big Ideas | Alexi Pappas
12 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
The Olympic runner, actress, filmmaker and writer Alexi Pappas shares what shes learned about confidence, self-reliance, mental health, embracing pain, and achieving your dreams. Heartbreaking and hilarious.Mindy Kaling A beautiful read.Ruth Reichl Essential guidance to anyone dreaming big dreams.Shalane Flanagan I couldnt put it down.Adam Grant run like a bravey sleep like a baby dream like a crazy replace cant with maybe When Renaissance runner (New York Times) Alexi PappasOlympic athlete, actress, filmmaker, and writerwas four years old, her mother died by suicide, drastically altering the course of Pappass life and setting her on a search for female role models. When her father signed his bereaved daughter up for sports teams as a way to keep her busy, female athletes became the first women Pappas looked up to, and her Olympic dream was born. At the same time, Pappas had big creative dreams, too: She wanted to make movies, write, and act. Despite setbacks and hardships, Pappas refused to pick just one lane. She put in a tremendous amount of hard work and wouldnt let anything stand in her way until she achieved all of her dreams, however unrelated they may seem to outsiders. In a single year, 2016, she made her Olympic debut as a distance runner and wrote, directed, and starred in her first feature film. But great highs are often accompanied by deep lows; with joy comes sorrow. In Bravey, Pappas fearlessly and honestly shares her battle with post-Olympic depression and describes how she emerged on the other side as a thriving and self-actualized woman. Unflinching, exuberant, and always entertaining, Bravey showcases Pappass signature, charming voice as she reflects upon the touchstone moments in her life and the lessons that have powered her career as both an athlete and an artistforemost among them, how to be brave. Pappass experiences reveal how we can all overcome hardship, befriend pain, celebrate victory, relish the loyalty found in teammates, and claim joy. In short: how every one of us can become a bravey.

"...essential guidance to anyone dreaming big dreams" sums this book up nicely. I enjoyed this and learned a lot more than I expected to, both about Alexi and about myself. And I feel more inspired to show up and put in the hard and mundane work to chase some of my dreams that I've decided are real.

The memoir starts off strong then devolves into reflections as in a diary and not the stories that we saw at the start. And the stories were not an easy subject matter, to boot.

Still a worthwhile read and some life learned lessons or wisdom found.

My daughter-in-law is so inspired by Alexi Pappas that I had to read this. Alexi is California born and bred and Dartmouth educated. She has dual citizenship and represented Greece in the 2016 Olympics. Her running and sponsorship story is fascinating. Her ability to battle depression following concerns of her own mother‘s death by suicide is truly worth the read.

marleed I did have to ask my DIL if she ever saw Alexi and Harry Potter in the same room - because I think they may be the same person :) (edited) 4y

I loved the honesty and emotion in Bravey. Pappas discusses her struggles with depression in an open way that is easy to relate to. She shows that even someone that appears to have everything going for her still struggles. Pappas inspires readers to chase their dreams and not to let anything get them down.

Thank you Random House for gifting me this book.

This book was not on my radar until my DIL was telling me how inspired she is by Pappas‘s words. This weekend, Alexi Pappas added Brittany‘s Instagram story to her own and superimposed ‘DREAMY‘ on the pic. Now I really need to check out this memoir!

This book was amazing. I could so relate to Alexis as she struggled with having a mom who had a mental illness , dealing growing up without a mom, struggling with her own mental illness but overcoming and becoming her own women. So many quotes saved and footnotes!

Book 10 of 150.
