Fresh from a six-month sojourn in Italy, Lady Julia returns home to Sussex to find her father's estate crowded with family and friends but dark deeds are afoot at the deconsecrated abbey, and a murderer roams the ancient cloisters. .Much to her surprise, the one man she had hoped to forget - the enigmatic and compelling Nicholas Brisbane - is among her father's houseguests... and he is not alone. Not to be outdone, Julia shows him that two can play at flirtation and promptly introduces him to her devoted, younger Italian count..But the homecoming celebrations quickly take a ghastly turn when one of the guests is found brutally murdered in the chapel, and a member of Lady Julia's own family confesses to the crime. Certain of her cousin's innocence, Lady Julia resumes her unlikely and deliciously intriguing partnership with Nicholas Brisbane, setting out to unravel a tangle of deceit before the killer can strike again. When a sudden snowstorm blankets the abbey like a shroud, it falls to Lady Julia and Nicholas Brisbane to answer the shriek of murder most foul.

I really enjoyed this second book in the Julia Grey series. It took me a minute to remember everything that happened in the first book (which I didn‘t lol). I liked this one, set at Julia‘s childhood “home”. A lot of her siblings were around and I love Portia. I would love a spin off series of her.

I can‘t wait to read the next one in this series and to see where Julia and Brisbane‘s relationship goes.

Like the first book in the series, it starts out really slow. It seems like it takes half the book for someone to actually die. But I am hooked on Deanna Raybourn's style of writing, her character development, and the multiple crazy endings that I couldn't guess, but somehow feel like I should have.

So I definitely liked this one more than book 1 but I am really noticing that this is like a Veronica Speedwell beta or light which gives me a "I think I've read this before" feeling. I like how the romance is developing and the mystery was far more complex and less obvious than book one.

rretzler I started out liking the Lady Julia books, but by the end was really frustrated with her. I like the Veronica books so much more! 6y
Lucy_Anywhere Oh my gosh, THANK YOU! I read these books years ago. I remember enjoying them, but could not for the life of me remember anything useful about them... like the author or the title or the names of the main characters 😂 now I can go search them out again! 6y

Time to enjoy book 2 of the Lady Julia series. Hoping my girl...finds a man who won't give her an STI? (A high bar was set in book 1 lol)

+ Silent in the Moors (3rd Lady Julia Grey novel) I ended up reading these one after the other ?? I probably liked "In the Sanctuary" a little more because of the cast of characters but I liked the ending of "on the Moors for reasons ❤️ #MayBooks #JuneBooks ?

Spent a lot of last night going “but no one‘s dead yet” and then really questioning myself. But just shy of halfway through and we‘ve got ourselves a murder. (I say this like I wasn‘t living for the awkward sexual tension in the first half)

Second in the Lady Julia Grey series. A couple of mysteries and the introduction of Julia‘s family. A fun cast of characters, however I‘m not sure I care much for Julia. Will read the next one and decide if I will recommend the series to my Mom. Always trying to find new ones for her to read.

Bklover I‘m enjoying Raybourn‘s Veronica Speedwell series! 7y
dsfisher @Bklover I love those which is why I decided to try the Lady Julia 7y
minkyb I will wait to hear what you think. I was going to try the Lady Julia series because I adore Veronica. 7y

#aprilbookshowers I chose Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia series because I love the interplay among the March #siblings. Particularly as the series went on, she included more and more about this eccentric family. The witty dialogue between the brothers and sisters is masterfully done.

julesG Is this series good? I've only read her Veronica Speedwell books so far. 8y
JSW Love this series!! 8y
[DELETED] 3144876009 I ❤️her books! 8y
Lynnsoprano @julesG If you like Veronica, you will like Julia. The first book, Silent in the Grave, has one of the best opening lines of any book. 8y
julesG @Lynnsoprano okay, I guess you just sold it to me. ;) 8y

Glad I stuck with this series even after the first book didn't wow me. This one was much better in my opinion (I'd give it a 4/5), and I plan to continue on to the third one soon! #romantsy

Lady Julia Grey qualifies for #unforgettablewomen. She is one of my favorite characters, and I actually got angry when the author decided to end the series #booktober

President Obama, I love you so. I keep thinking of this quote while reading (and loving) the second Julia Grey book because Julia's eccentric and progressive-for-his-Regency-England-time father is another example of this. He nurtures her mind and raises her expectations -- for herself and others. So glad I finally started this series. Thanks for the rec, @nessochist!
