I loved The Blacktongue Thief. Great foreshadowing, subtle world building, fun characters, zippy dialogue, and plenty of room for a sequel. Buelhman had a great grasp of fantasy tropes that don't feel derivative.

This is a nice middle ground between LotR and The Witcher: weirder than the former but not as bizarre as the latter. The novel is told from a first-person pov, and the protagonist is a likeable rogue. The world building is interesting without being excessive. And Buehlman has a good sense of humor.

I liked a lot of the fantasy elements used in this book, and I think the story had a lot of potential. However, the execution wasn't always great. A lot of this book felt like the author wanted to write a long, epic series but was worried his publishers wouldn't let him do that, so he tried to shove six books worth of plot and characters into one book.

This fantasy adventure is perfect for anyone who loves a rogue rich with wit and charm and cheap when it comes to scruples, a scamp who‘ll steal your heart along with whatever you‘ve got in your pockets. The audiobook is truly excellent, with the author performing a myriad of voices and dialects and singing all the gorgeous traditional ballads woven through the book.

🎧 I‘ve sat on this review for DAYS because SO MANY people love it.

Kinch (MC) was snarky, funny, genuine most of the time. The author/narrator swears/sings & the heavy Scottish/Irish accent was a distracting miss for me.

Just know that if you like the MC you‘ll probably enjoy this book.

World building, premise, action, tattoo magic, banter/humor - 4.5⭐️

Plot, narration, engagement, character development - 2.5⭐️

Final rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 👇🏻

Twainy Told in 1st person it felt like a dnd quest as the MC (a thief) owes the Guild a lot of money for training & the person he first tries robbing ends up being a soldier & they‘re off on an adventure!

Chapters flew by in what felt like isolated episodes leaving me wondering if I missed something between chapters a few times, so the plot felt a little choppy. I may READ the book to see if that changes my opinion. 3y

Reggie Ughhhh I loved all of his other books that were horror and wasn‘t sure if I should give this one a chance, but now pretty sure it‘s a no. 3y

Twainy @Reggie I think that might be my problem. This is not horror at all. The last book I read of his was The Lesser Dead. I suppose there‘s some similar humor but this is more fantasy? I‘m going to reread it as the narration was distracting. 3y

A review in a few more words—This is one of my favorite books of the year, one I read slowly to make it last as long as I could. Dark, funny, violent & irreverent with a compelling story, fantastic characters, complex world building, this is a great story that ends with the promise of more. And you‘ll want it. I cannot wait to return to this world! If you like fantasy, you want to read this one.

One of the more impressive things an author can do is write a debut that reads as if that author has long been a master of their craft. Such is the case with this fantasy I just started. Very impressive and beyond entertaining—it‘s had me smiling and even laughing out loud—so far. If it keeps going like this, I might be adding another book to my “favorites of the year” list.

GondorGirl I was just talking about this book with a friend! Christophe and I worked a lot of the same renfaires for years before I realized he was also an author. He did a small private show when my partner and I got engaged. It's really interesting to see how his faire persona differs from his writing- his books have so much depth and weight. I've really enjoyed the few that I've read. 3y

GondorGirl @TracyReadsBooks Yup! We typically see him at least once a season. When he had a show at Michigan he was right by our booth and would stop down all the time. Dark, irreverent, and funny is definitely his style- in the faire world he's an insult comic! 3y

I really enjoyed listening to this start of a new fantasy series! The performance is an absolute pleasure- songs are even sung quite nicely! And though there were some moments when did want a physical copy- it was more because I was curious of the spellings than anything else. I enjoyed the humor, the excitement and the modern edge to a rather traditional fantasy story! Looking forward to the sequel! #AudioColoring

Witty. Interesting world lore. Well developed and charismatic protagonist.

Very much 'modern fantasy' feeling...I'm enjoying it. Also...there are killer bird-companions the size of horses. Soooo...yeah.

Bookies Holy moly. I can't relate to your review at all. I found there was quite a bit of action! Yes, this is a travel story, but this is more about character development than anything else. Seems to be it's setting the scene for a trilogy or something. I thought the writing was fantastic. The explanations were world-building and fascinating. I put this one on my picks shelf on release day. 3y

I've read other books by this author, but they were horror. I'm not sure if he has other fantasy novels, but he should definitely write more in this genre because his world building and unique characters are excellent!

This fast paced read is full of action, adventure, intrigue, magic, and humor. Although it took a few chapters for me to really understand the world I was in once I settled in I didn't want to stop reading.
