Mrs England
Mrs England | Stacey Halls
West Yorkshire, 1904. When newly graduated nurse Ruby May takes a position looking after the children of Charles and Lilian England, a wealthy couple from a powerful dynasty of mill owners, she hopes it will be the fresh start she needs. But as she adapts to life at the isolated Hardcastle House, it becomes clear there's something not quite right about the beautiful, mysterious Mrs England. Ostracised by the servants and feeling increasingly uneasy, Ruby is forced to confront her own demons in order to prevent history from repeating itself. After all, there's no such thing as the perfect family - and she should know. Simmering with slow-burning menace, Mrs England is a portrait of an Edwardian marriage, weaving an enthralling story of men and women, power and control, courage, truth and the very darkest deception. Set against the atmospheric landscape of West Yorkshire, Stacey Halls' third novel proves her one of the most exciting and compelling new storytellers of our times. The slow pace and the storytelling are really pleasant and enticing, with mysteries slowly revealed and a great portrait of a typical Edwardian marriage. In 1904, a qualified nanny takes a job with the wealthy England family where she takes care of their four children. Apparently something is off with Mrs. England, but the nanny herself seems to be hiding her own dark secrets.

I would say this is between a ‘pick‘ and ‘so-so‘ for me. Firstly, I quite liked the storytelling and the slow pace of the book. It was interesting learning about how nurses were taking care of the children during 1900s. Also, there seemed to be quite few mysteries such as the strange behaviour of Mrs England and unsettling memories of Nurse May.

So, there were quite few things to reveal but all came down very quickly and it wasn‘t as shocking.

Really enjoying reading Stacey Halls books at the moment. Her storytelling is so immersive and I love that her books always centre around stong female protagonists! #pick

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

4⭐️ I really enjoyed this read. I liked how the author slowly drew me into the book and how the mysteries were revealed, even though I felt it kinda dragged a bit in the beginning. I wonder if the author chose Norland because the Prince and Princess of Wales use a Norland nanny. I was pleasantly surprised by this book & would recommend it to other fans of #historicalfiction. #2023 #fiction #bookclub ⬇️

I didn‘t enjoy this one as much as The Foundling but I still thought it was very good. Very slow burn but the characters and setting are so enticing that I didn‘t mind. Lots of tension and suspense that was very well maintained throughout. I think Stacey Halls is one of my favourite authors at the moment and I will be eagerly awaiting her next book.

I really like Stacey Halls‘ books. This is the 2nd one I‘ve read of hers and really enjoyed it. (I also own The Foundling but haven‘t read it yet).

I also buy all her books on Book Depository because I like the UK versions better.

This one is based on Ruby in the 1900s. She is a nurse for well off families. She has a lot of baggage and the family she cares for has a lot of secrets.

This was one of my #Roll100 picks!

And who searched eBay for the hardback pretty cover when you could have just gotten it at Barnes and Noble faster 🙋🏻‍♀️

jlhammar Love that cover! I enjoyed one of her previous novels, The Familiars. Haven‘t tried this one yet. 2y

Jane Eyre vibes here! This was a pleasant listen, with atmospheric creepy tension and just enough psychological thrill to keep up plot momentum without being cheap.

I won‘t remember this one, but it was entertaining.

This book has been in my sights for so long! I never had a favourite author, until I read The Familiars and The Foundling by Stacey Halls.

Historical fiction at its finest. So well written, researched and executed.

I‘m excited to start Mrs England, but already dreading finishing it!

I have really enjoyed Stacey Halls books, but this is for me the best. Full of suspension and atmosphere, it keeps you guessing as to what is actually going on. I like stories set in large manors with servants out in the countryside.

Two women from different worlds with secrets are thrown together in this story about survival in a man's world. Ruby is a Norland Nurse seeming to run from her past. Mrs England appears to be the fragile wife. Set in early 1900's Yorkshire & written with an atmosphere that brings Wuthering Heights to mind, Halls creates characters who intrigue you whilst reminding you of societal hierarchy & behaviours of the time.
