All That We Carried
All That We Carried | Erin Bartels
8 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
Ten years ago, sisters Olivia and Melanie Greene were on a backcountry hiking trip when their parents were in a fatal car accident. Over the years, they grew apart, each coping with the loss in her own way. Olivia plunged herself into law school, work, and an atomistic view of the world--what you see is what you get, and that's all you get. Melanie dropped out of college and developed an online life-coaching business around her cafeteria-style spirituality--a little of this, a little of that, whatever makes you happy. Now, at Melanie's insistence (and against Olivia's better judgment), they are embarking on a hike in the Porcupine Mountains of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In this remote wilderness they'll face their deepest fears, question their most dearly held beliefs, and begin to see that perhaps the best way to move forward is the one way they had never considered. Michigan Notable Book Award winner Erin Bartels draws from personal experience hiking backcountry trails with her sister to bring you a story about the complexities of grief, faith, and sisterhood.

Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView !
1 Currently reading 2 books, the tagged one and "Believing is Seeing " by physicist Michael Guillen
2 the tagged book explores a broken relationship between two sisters who, after 10 years, meet to hike the Upper Peninsula. Totally connecting with the interactions between them.
Guillen posits the the hypothesis through quantum physics and scientific exploration of the existence of God. He was an atheist.

AmyG How are you, Di??? I haven‘t “seen” you around in a while. 3y
Crazeedi @AmyG I'm back, yes things were rather messed up for a couple months, thanks for reaching out!❤ 3y

I enjoyed this story (with a few caveats) of family reconnection after tragedy and searching for our true selves and what we believe in.

Olivia and Melanie are sisters who lost their parents while in college. They are very different people and have dealt with the tragedy aftermath differently as well. Having not seen each other in a decade, Melanie calls to invite Olivia on a hiking trip in the UP of Michigan, and she reluctantly agrees. 🔻

robinb The trip reinforces their differences...Olivia (a prosecuting attorney), as the older sister, is controlling, take-charge and protective while Melanie is a free spirit who is a "happiness" counselor through her social media and accepts and embraces all forms of spirituality. Through a series of mishaps they meet Josh, a fisherman who helps them both physically and spiritually as they struggle to get past themselves ? 4y
robinb and their grief to forge a new path together.

While in my opinion, this book was overly long and the bickering at times was frustrating and childish, I particularly enjoyed the second half as they began to seriously question themselves and their beliefs. The ending was a bit abrupt and ambiguous as to the future, but overall I liked this story and would be happy to read more from this author. 4/5⭐️

Mehso-so

Two sisters that have been estranged since the death of their parents go on a hiking trip to reconnect.

Those readers who enjoy family drama and hiking will love this book.

The writing is amazing as always, but it was different from her other books and not something for me. 3/5

This book allows the reader to follow along two estranged sisters, Olivia and Melanie, through a week-long hike in the Porcupine Mountains in Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The scenery is absolutely breath-taking and I felt like I was actually hiking the trails with them, suffering and triumphing alongside their losses and victories. I received the book from Revell via Interview & Reviews without obligation to review. All comments are my own.
