The Electric Kingdom | David Arnold
18 posts | 17 read | 23 to read
New York Times bestseller David Arnold's most ambitious novel to date; Station Eleven meets The 5th Wave in a genre-smashing story of survival, hope, and love amid a ravaged earth. When a deadly Fly Flu sweeps the globe, it leaves a shell of the world that once was. Among the survivors are eighteen-year-old Nico and her dog, on a voyage devised by Nico's father to find a mythical portal; a young artist named Kit, raised in an old abandoned cinema; and the enigmatic Deliverer, who lives Life after Life in an attempt to put the world back together. As swarms of infected Flies roam the earth, these few survivors navigate the woods of post-apocalyptic New England, meeting others along the way, each on their own quest to find life and love in a world gone dark. The Electric Kingdom is a sweeping exploration of art, storytelling, eternal life, and above all, a testament to the notion that even in an exterminated world, one person might find beauty in another.

I did end up liking this book, but it could have been considerably condensed. There were multiple pages and pages about how the wind felt and just walking and walking and thinking. Also, I was confused a lot during this book. Im not sure if it was me not understanding, or the author not explaining well enough. I also really didn't like the ending. It almost made the book feel as tho what was the point? 3/5

This book is in a word, astounding.

I literally *just* finished reading it and don't even know where to begin reviewing it. There is so much I want to say but I have also been rendered a little speechless.

Although the book is technically YA I found it to be a very complex and thought provoking exploration of the cyclical and concentric nature of time, space and the human experience, disguised as post- apocalyptic science fiction.

This book was an awesome exploration of the ties that hold people together, even in the worst of circumstances. In a post-apocalyptic world, the few people who remain view the world and their lives very pragmatically. Everything in their lives have a very specific purpose, a means to an end. Things that have no tangible purpose are left and forgotten about. In the magical world, only one can save, but all are tied together in love and friendship.

I think there's probably a lot I missed, and might have to reread it eventually, but I loved this book!

I‘ve only just started Electric Kingdom, but there‘s a dog in it. So here is Claude my bro‘s dog who I am taking care of while bro is in Italy! Claude likes short backyard jaunts, food, playing rough, food, and treats. He reminds me of Wilford Brimley the diabetes, Quaker Oats, Cocoon guy.

wanderinglynn What a cutie! ❤️🐶 3y
Nebklvr Claude looks like he is bonding with the carpet. What a doll 3y
Moonprismpower @Nebklvr right? Look at his face coating the rug. 😀😂 3y

Arnold is a great writer but after reading this one, I can only conclude I don‘t really like the stories he tells…even as I recognize they are well-written & deserving of the great reviews and fans they often garner. So, it‘s me, not the story. I loved the opening, it was dramatic, engaging & had me eagerly turning the page. What came after was simply not as compelling in my opinion. So this one was okay but not my favorite.

Dove deep into the TBR stacks and pulled out this YA ARC to read tonight. It‘s described as Station Eleven meets The Fifth Wave. I loved both of those books and if this one is at all like them, it should be a very entertaining read. 🤞

I also think that the story lacked action. For most of the book, it was just the kids wandering through the woods. Weird because it also lacked description? So, it lacked action and describing details, which is very odd. I did really enjoy the ending and how all the loose ends were tied up and how all those little things you now understood, but to get to that point felt like a long drive.

I never posted my February #BookSpinBingo board (too busy looking at all of yours 😂). It was an okay month, but I read a LOT of 3.5* books. The tagged was my favorite read of the month. I'm also still thinking a lot about 1984, but I am not sure I can say I enjoyed it haha

Roary47 Great job! 💛 4y

#coverlove and end paper love. I‘m excited to finally receive my signed copy. It was delayed because of weather. This one is not my typical genre, but I love the cover & like to support Arnold (he‘s local & his kid is adorable). My library‘s challenge has a prompt to read something outside of my normal genres, so this will work well.

This is a mind-bendy book that is a bit outside my usual reading jam, but I quite enjoyed it. There were still some things I would have liked to be more definitively explained, but a solid read on the whole. It's based around a bizarre pandemic & the world-building is well done. I got this one from the library, but will be on the lookout for a copy to own, as I see myself rereading this one at some point.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I loved Mosquitoland - and the same thing happened to me - borrowed it from the library, loved it, bought a copy 4y
Roary47 Really like that cover. 😀 4y
TheAromaofBooks @thegirlwiththelibrarybag - I feel like I should have just bought this one because I really enjoyed both Mosquitoland & Kids of Appetite. I guess I'm just helping the library continue to pick good books! 😂 4y

TheAromaofBooks @Roary47 - Right?? And it's just connected enough to the story to make sense but not so much that it gives the story away before you read it. 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TheAromaofBooks, I mean... sometimes the people who select library books do need a helping hand! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @thegirlwiththelibrarybag - I know there are so many things that go into how libraries choose which books to buy, which books to keep, which branches should get more/less funding, etc. So I never feel like it's a waste to check out a book from the library because if nothing else it gives my branch another “number“. I would be devastated if they decided to close my branch - the others are so far away!! 4y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TheAromaofBooks, a lot of it is based on loan stats (I think that‘s true of all libraries) but the selection process is really interesting - and sadly becoming more and more standardised (or worse, outsourced) so putting in requests for books is really important (and a way of helping make sure the collection doesn‘t become generic) 4y
Librariana @TheAromaofBooks @thegirlwiththelibrarybag - I work for my county library's Collection Services Department and although the final word on acquisitions is left up to our selectors/librarians, quantities are based on holds queues and demand. Our library is considered a "popular materials" collection, but we do try to honor patrons' requests as often as possible if we are unable to fulfill via Interlibrary loan. 4y
Librariana @TheAromaofBooks - As for the tagged title, I actually went to my local indie to purchase it, and the owner said she'd give me her ARC copy 😊 I'm looking forward to reading it myself! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Librariana - That's quite interesting about the material acquisitions. Several years ago our local county library joined interlibrary loan with the nearby metropolitan library (as well as several other smaller libraries) & the interlibrary loan rarely lets me down now. It's awesome, especially since I don't have time to drive up to the big library as much as I did back in the day - now they come to my tiny local branch!! 4y

I don‘t want to give away too much about the plot, but I will say it is sort of circular and kind of trippy (if that makes any sense). It‘s a book that you have to read for yourself. By the time I got to the end, my mind was blown.

A beautifully written, haunting apocalyptic journey. The Electric Kingdom tells the story of a world in the near future ravaged by an apocalyptic pandemic. Carnivorous flies, carrying a deadly Fly Flu, have devastated the world, leaving behind few survivors. The wonderful characters are a group of orphaned young survivors who seek safety, love and answers. The Electric Kingdom is mesmerizing, dark, sad, thought-provoking and strangely hopeful.

The Electric Kingdom by David Arnold was simply amazing! This is one of those rare books where once the last page was turned I immediately wanted to go right back to the beginning and start over again.

Have you heard about BookishFirst.com. Anyone can sign up. Get first look at books, give your opinion, and possibly win a copy of said books. You also earn points and when you collect enough points you can “claim” a book. So I claimed this one. It sounds interesting but didn‘t feel like I would want to pay for it. So yeah free books for me and maybe free books for you too. Be sure to check it out.

BookFreakOut Love that website! Have found some great titles from there that I wouldn't have tried otherwise! 4y
