Smoke | Ellen Hopkins
Pattyns father is dead. Now shes on the run in this riveting companion to New York Times bestseller Burned, which Kirkus Reviews calls a strong, painful, and tender piece about wresting hope from the depths of despair.Pattyn Von Strattens father is dead, and Pattyn is on the run. After far too many years of abuse at the hands of her father, and after the tragic loss of her beloved Ethan and their unborn child, Pattyn is desperate for peace. Only her sister Jackie knows what happened that fatal night, but she is stuck at home with their mother, who clings to normalcy by allowing the truth to be covered up by their domineering community leaders. Her father might be finally gone, but without Pattyn, Jackie is desperately isolated. Alone and in disguise, Pattyn starts a new life as a migrant worker on a California ranch. But is it even possible to rebuild a life when everything youve known has burned to ash and lies seem far safer than the truth? Bestselling author Ellen Hopkins continues the riveting story of Pattyn Von Stratten she began in Burned to explore what it takes to rise from the ashes, put ghosts to rest, and step into a future.

Really liked the interplay of viewpoints between Pattyn and her sister Jackie, who are both recovering from traumas, and are separated geographically, but constantly in each others‘ hearts 💕 Sequel to Burned

I really enjoyed the second book in this duology series. Also, there are a lot of themes that sprout out of this duology series, and the most important thing to understand from this series is that love returns at different times and in many forms in a person's life, and that as people, when something is truly wrong--wrong in a senseof actions and words that leads to the endangerment of others-- within our proximity, we must fight that wrong.

Finished Burned yesterday, and I want to see what happens to Pattyn in the second book. I could feel myself about to cry when I read the end of Burned (which helped me realize that I do love realistically swoony heartfelt stories ❤❤❤).

I must confess I was put off by the written in verse aspect before I read the first book in this series. The raw emotions of Pattyn's life work well in poetic form. There's much more teen angst and emotion in this. While it is understandable, it does sometimes lean toward melodrama. All in all, it's decent work and I see why my students like Hopkins's work. Crank is also on my TBR.

That._.one._.nerd Crank was amazing! Smoke us on my TBR book, once my library gets it :) 7y
kissxxmyxxconverse Ellen Hopkins was one of my favorites as a teenager! I fell off the bandwagon, but I loved Impulse and Tricks the best ❤️ 7y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Yes! I hardly ever enjoy sequels as much as the first books in a pair. However, with Burned and Smoke this was not the case. I loved them both so much.

I really liked this. It was one of the few times I've enjoyed the sequel more than the first book. The twist at the end was great too!
