Anyone else read books their kids are assigned in school? I‘m starting this one I‘ve never read to be able to talk about it with my son. I‘ve read some other really good books I never got around to by doing this.

One thing about this book; I get something different from it every time I read it. I think this might be my 3rd time reading it (maybe 4th) but I always enjoy it. One of the things that stood out to me this time was Janie‘s speech about her grandmother and the pedestal she wanted Janie to sit on. It was such a powerful speech on how and why we do what we do for those we love. Sometimes that love crushes those we love. Is that really love?
That children‘s book was all over the place so I am taking a break from it to follow my original plan. For my birthday/end of school gift from school (I‘m moving schools) I got a book gift certificate that I used to purchase a collection of Hurston‘s writings. I also got her book of essays as a birthday gift from my principal. My friend wanted to do a buddy read of this book so let‘s get started.
Such an empowering read. I recommend this for those who want to read a story on self-discovery, but to say this is only a story on self-discovery would be an injustice. #zoranealehurston #empower #selfdiscovery #reader #Freyareccomends
I've been out of school for awhile and sometimes feel intimidated to try the classics. But, I bought this audiobook on sale, and it was EVERYTHING! Not only was the story empowering, Ruby Dee's narration brought this book to life in vivid and engaging way I hadn't expected. 🖤🤎🖤🤎🖤🤎🖤🤎🖤🤎🖤🤎🖤
Ya‘ll, I went from not reading a book in 2 months to finishing Animal Farm, 3 short stories and starting another book. I‘m hoping I can keep the momentum going!
If you haven‘t listened to this audiobook you must do yourself a favor and add it to your audioTBR! Ruby Dee is the narrator and she puts on a stellar performance👏🏽!
In the past I‘ve struggled with Zora‘s writing style. I‘ve never fully enjoy her work because of her use of character accents & regional dialects. But, listening to the book made all the difference in the world! With Ruby reading I was able to totally appreciate Zora‘s brilliance.
This book is like leisurely road trip through Florida on a hot summer day. It moves slow and languid, making a few stops along the way until a mid-afternoon flash storm hits. We go through the fictional Janie Crawford's three marriages as she tries to find her place in post-depression south.
Ruby Dee's narration was fantastic, bringing to life the dialects of a black south that I was unfamiliar with & would've been lacking had I read this print.
Soulful and lyrical. But still not as great as I expected it to be from all the reviews I‘ve read.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Black Chick Lit podcast read and discussed this book in a recent episode. I'm ashamed to admit that I've never read it. I remedied that this week. Ruby Dee was the narrator and it added so much to my enjoyment. The writing is beautiful.
