The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: A Novel | Deborah Moggach
19 posts | 23 read | 18 to read
Now a major motion picture starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Billy Nighy, and Dev Patel When Ravi Kapoor, an overworked London doctor, reaches the breaking point with his difficult father-in-law, he asks his wife: Cant we just send him away somewhere? Somewhere far, far away. His prayer is seemingly answered when Ravis entrepreneurial cousin sets up a retirement home in India, hoping to re-create in Bangalore an elegant lost corner of England. Several retirees are enticed by the promise of indulgent living at a bargain price, but upon arriving, they are dismayed to find that restoration of the once sophisiticated hotel has stalled, and that such amenities as water and electricity are . . . infrequent. But what their new life lacks in luxury, they come to find, its plentiful in adventure, stunning beauty, and unexpected love. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

This is for sure an example of a movie taking the basic idea of a book and running wildly in different directions wirh it. It's for the better, though, I think. The clumsy treatment of class differences, the depressing reflections on married life and the unappealing character of Sonny are all vastly improved in the movie.

It took me a bit to formulate my thoughts on this one. I liked most of the characters and the story. Some of it was a little hard to swallow. The idea of the elderly being a burden bothered me, even though I suppose that is how some modern cultures have evolved. It was impossibly sad that these older people were just forgotten or pushed away by family. However, the fact that they all took a leap and found a new life or a second chance in ⬇️

Elizabeth2 in a foreign land is inspiring. There is racism and sexism that is sort of brushed away. Not entirely, but enough that it bugged me. Although, I do suppose that also makes the story real, because there are people like that in this world. I saw the movie several years ago and don‘t remember any of that. From what I‘ve read, the movie is quite different from the book. I think this is one case where the movie is better. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 (edited) 4y

Another #snowday here! This is a pretty snow - huge flakes and moderate to heavy snowfall, but because yesterday was a warmer day, the roads are warm enough that they are just slushy. And it‘s supposed to stop by early afternoon. I‘m hoping to finish this book before I have to start cooking for the big game! I‘m rooting for the Chiefs! #sundayvibes

CoffeeAndABook Sounds like a wonderful plan! Enjoy the snow day and game night. Am also rooting for the Chiefs 🙌🏼 Mahomes 👊🏼 But it won‘t be an easy win. And I‘ll have to wait until TOMORROW to watch it as I live in Germany and kickoff is at 12:30 a.m.!! 4y
Elizabeth2 @CoffeeAndABook I‘m a Mahomes fan. He‘s a lot like our QB Lamar Jackson (Ravens). I really like watching him play. Hoping it‘s a good game. Hopefully, you‘ll be able to stay away from spoilers and enjoy the game tomorrow! 4y
Crazeedi @CoffeeAndABook maybe fo to bed early and get up at midnight??😉 work may interfere though. Here in the states, people have been clamoring for Monday after super bowl be made a holiday!! @Elizabeth2 dont you think that's a good idea?? 4y

vivastory Go Chiefs!! 4y
Crazeedi @Elizabeth2 you're getting that quick storm again!! We only have flurries, but it's coooolllllddddd!!!!!🌬❄ 4y
Elizabeth2 @Crazeedi yes for the day after holiday! Especially if your team is playing. My husband used to take the day after off when we were younger and went to SB parties. We are way past that now, unless the Ravens are playing. 😂 It‘s too warm here for the snow to really take hold. It‘s been snowing all morning, but there‘s been a lot of melt. We probably only have an inch or so on the ground. I don‘t mind. Means we don‘t have to shovel. 😂 4y
CoffeeAndABook @Elizabeth2 @Crazeedi I have tried staying up for SB games as well as getting up again. Both are too hard! It‘s not quite the same watching the next day but staying away from spoilers is not a big problem, it‘s not really a thing here 😉 have a super fun night with Patrick 🙌🏼🏈🍿 4y
Crazeedi @CoffeeAndABook I understand!! 4y
CoffeeAndABook @Elizabeth2 So - I saw the game yesterday. It was a great game - up until some point. I thought it‘d be a lot closer either way. I‘m disappointed for Mahomes but the Buccs simply deserved to win, didn‘t they. The entire team played extremely well. So I can live with that 🤷🏼‍♀️👏🏼 How about you? (edited) 4y
Elizabeth2 @CoffeeAndABook I agree. No question who the better team was on Sunday. I definitely thought it would be a lot closer. During the game, we were talking about how serious Tom Brady is when he plays. That smile afterward was something to see though, and I thought it was really classy how he refused to compare this SB win to previous SB wins. He won with grace. On to next year! 🙂 4y
CoffeeAndABook @Elizabeth2 I totally agree, he did win with grace. It‘s hard not to like or at least respect him. On to next year indeed!! 🙃 He‘s crazy not to take this and bow out while on top - but that‘s what people probably said years ago 😂 4y

Snow day = reading day! ❤️📚❄️

AmyG Looks divine! And your sweet dog! 4y
TheSpineView Pretty! ❄❄❄ 4y
Elizabeth2 @AmyG she is such a sweetie! Our Hazel Little Thing. She was an Amish puppy mill Mama, who for some reason wasn‘t deemed good enough at just 2 years old. (We think she must have had problems birthing puppies because she‘s so small.) Lucky for us because she is the sweetest, funniest little thing! She went from living in a barn year round, to snuggling in front of a fire. ❤️ And she LOVES the snow! 😂 (edited) 4y

Elizabeth2 @TheSpineView it is a pretty snow, and just a little bit, which is fine with me! We were forecasted to get quite a storm and it turned into a bit of a bust. It won‘t be over until Tuesday morning, but they‘ve lowered our snow totals. Only supposed to get around 6” total now. 4y
AmyG She is a princess in her cozy sweater! (Or jacket. I can‘t see on my phone) Lucky her!!! 💕 (edited) 4y

The three day snow event predicted for our area has started! I‘m sitting in my favorite indoor reading spot, watching the snow come down and coat everything, drinking my coffee. This is the biggest snow event we‘ve had in a few years. Supposed to mix with ice tomorrow morning and then change back to heavy snow by tomorrow afternoon through Tuesday morning. Perfect reading weather! ❤️📚❄️

Jumping into this book next for #20in4, given to me by my generous and thoughtful friend @EadieB . I‘ve seen the film, and my husband and I really liked it. I didn‘t know at the time that it was based on a book. ❤️📚🌼

EadieB @Elizabeth2 I will have to check out the movie! Hope you enjoy the book! Enjoy the snowstorm too! 4y
Elizabeth2 @EadieB you too! I think you‘re going to get more snow than we do. They are calling for 6”-12” here. Some say maybe as much as 14”. Dry air has set in, and while the snow is on the radar, at 8:45am we have yet to see a flake hit the ground. I‘m not complaining - my oldest has to work until 1:15pm. Hoping for only a couple of inches by then. Once he‘s home, let it snow! ❄️🌨❄️ 4y
EadieB @Elizabeth2 It's suppose to start here at 10:00 am. Your books I sent are in New Jersey. The tracking said they will be late but will arrive someday I guess! lol 4y

Elizabeth2 @EadieB it just truly started snowing here, and it started sticking immediately. The neighbor‘s roof is already white, and the road is already snow covered in some spots. It‘s going to pile up fast. Can‘t wait to see what else you sent my way...You are so generous!! ❤️ 4y
EadieB @elizabeth2 They are the Erika Spindler Malone series books. I sent them 2 weeks ago and they only made it to Jersey City. 4y
Elizabeth2 @EadieB oh right! I had forgotten about that! I‘m excited to read them! ❤️❤️ 4y

Thanks @EadieB for this lovely book! I saw the movie, and loved it, before I knew there was a novel. As we all know, more often than not, the book is better! Can‘t wait to see if that holds true here! You are so kind! 💕🥰💕

EadieB You‘re welcome! Enjoy! 4y

I searched a long time to find this original book. (It was renamed after the movie.) And I have to say it‘s one of the only times I‘ve ever felt the movie was better than the book. Probably the only time. But it is. Watch the movie. There‘s enough there to make it a low pick, but just barely -almost a so-so. Call it a pick for what Judi Dench did with the material in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

MaGoose I felt the same way about Agatha Christie's “Nemesis.“ I saw the TV movie with Joan Hickson as Miss Marple and thought it was far superior to the Christie story. 4y
TEArificbooks I felt that way about The Fifth Wave 4y
Traci1 I LOVE this movie. I didn't know it was a book. Sad it's not as good. 4y

No. I can't. According to goodreads I'm in the minority but I find this neither funny nor charming.

mirnas It's full of stereotypes😁 4y
bookandbedandtea @mirnass Yes indeed! 😒 I haven't seen it but I strongly suspect this is one of those times the movie was better than the book. 4y

Not only was this book a #booktosilverscreen, but after the success of the Judi Dench movie, subsequent editions changed the title to match the movie. (Original title tagged.) #janinbooks18 @bookisglee
