I had heard about #Hiroshima (book) in some of my peace studies but it wasn't something we ever read. We also never really got into how it fit into history, why it was so impactful, and everything it ushered into existence and this book does a really good job at doing all of this, and it's an esp imp read considering that #nuclearwar and distortions of the truth are big probs now. Took a day's break from reading since I've been at it nonstop for a few days, started this really old #netgalley ARC, we had moments of silence at work for these two days, tbh, I'm silently conflicted with the narrative of #hiroshima and #nagasaki. I know it's tragic and horrific but it's always focused on the Japanese victims when there were many others who were forcefully in Japan and they are not remembered #nonfiction #augustARC @Clwojick

My husband gave this to me for Christmas. I read Hersey‘s Hiroshima ages ago. Excited to read this. Starting tonight.

Everyone should read this and realize how important a free press is these United States of America. How someone can learn about this and utter the words fake news disgusts me

Until Hiroshima appeared, “Most of the reporting...had to do with the power of the bomb & how much damage it had done to the city. In choosing to focus on individuals, Hersey was influenced by Thornton Wilder‘s Bridge of San Luis Rey, choosing the pov of victims as they came to their “moment of shared disaster.”

John Hersey‘s Hiroshima is one of the most important works of journalism, and has been read by millions worldwide. This is the backstory of how it came to be. Until it appeared in the New Yorker, the US had managed to hide the magnitude of what the bomb had done, as well as its implications for humanity. The work was revolutionary in focusing on the individual—“what happened not to buildings but to human beings.”

This book is about an article written in 1946 that first introduced the world-at-large to the true devastation that had befallen the citizens of Hiroshima after the dropping of the atomic bomb. The US government and General McArthur, in particular, had imposed draconian censorship upon reporters attempting to tell the story. John Hershey‘s article had a tremendous impact as it focused on the human lives that had been destroyed by the bomb.

Just heard about this one on NPR this morning. Sounds crazy interesting. How the media found out the truth about how the US bombed Hiroshima and the devastation it caused to citizens and the communities. The government would have covered up all of the destruction and total impact if not for the reporters revealing it to the American public. #americaneedsjournalists
