What Would Frida Do?
What Would Frida Do?: A Guide to Living Boldly | Arianna Davis
25 posts | 16 read | 14 to read
A contemporary guide to life, inspired by the extraordinary artist Frida Kahlo Revered as much for her fierce spirit as she is for her art, Frida Kahlo stands today as a brazen symbol of daring creativity. She was a woman ahead of her time whose paintings have earned her generations of admirers around the globe. But perhaps her greatest work of art was her own life. What Would Frida Do? explores the feminist icon's signature style, outspoken politics, and boldness in love and art, even in the face of pain and heartbreak. The book celebrates her larger than life persona as a woman who loved passionately and lived ambitiously, refusing to remain in her husband's shadow. Each chapter shares intimate stories from her life, revealing how she overcame obstacles by embracing her own ideals. In this charming read, author Arianna Davis conjures Frida's brave spirit, encouraging women to persevere, to create fearlessly, and to stand by their own truths.

Good read! I learned a lot about Frida. She was definitely a unique person with a unique and hard life. She is someone to look to for inspiration. She was smart, brave, funny, charismatic, opinionated, kind, loud, and bold. It was fitting for #WomensHistoryMonth.
My only critique is that it is really repetitive. The same information was shared again and again in each chapter.

Finally got to reading this, and I did it in one day! While it claims not to be a biography, it certainly has biographical details about Frida‘s life that impacted her art and personality. In addition, Davis gives us tips on how to channel our inner Frida, from love to fashion. Not only did I get a sense of who Frida was as a person, it made me feel like I was reading advice Frida would give me if I were her friend.

The Norton Museum of Art had a Frida Kahlo exhibit, and I got the chance to go before school starts! I‘m going to put her picture up in my library.

The book was written as part biography and part self help inspo written between the facts of Fridas life and how you can apply her essence to your life. I don‘t typically read nonfiction books like this but was curious about Frida Kahlo since I never rally delved into her life and artwork before. Her life was astounding! The one thing I took away was Frida was just like me and you. A girl exploring her life outside what society wanted.

⭐⭐⭐
I didn't know much about Frida Kahlo, but I became interested after reading about her journals. I was excited to see this as a BOTM add on. This was an approachable book, good for anyone with a new curiosity about her. This is not for scholars of Frida. The concept of tying her life to a self-help style book was unique, but I got bogged down by the overwhelming amount of repetition. I think this happened because of the format. 🎨💐 🇲🇽

I am a huge Frida fan and was really excited about reading this book. While there were some interesting anecdotes about Friday‘s life, there were too many moments when the author simply speculated about Frida‘s actions. Maybe it was because I was expecting a different kind of book, but this left me a little flat. On the upside it is very well written and the author presented the info in an engaging manner, but it just wasn‘t for me. #AxeTheStacks

This book was a fun way to get to know a bit about Frida Kahlo. The author‘s admiration for her subject shines through without veering into hero worship, and I like how she suggests lessons to learn from Frida. I definitely feel like I know more about Frida than I did before and can see why she inspires Arianna.

Not exactly book related but my friends and I FINALLY got tickets to the Mexican Modernism exhibit at the Denver Art Museum and it was wonderful!

As is this book about the fascinating Frida Kahlo which happens to be my #DoubleSpin for this month @TheAromaofBooks

Coleen_Nieto @bookandbedandtea I'm so happy you made it! Did you like it? I bought What Would Frida Do? too! 4y

3.5/5

thought this was an interesting introduction to Frida Kahlo's life framed by lessons we can learn from her life today. I really enjoyed the details I learned about her life, and did find inspiration from her life to make small changes in my own.

I thought the narrator did a wonderful job giving voice to Frida and Diego, and I thought the descriptions of the paintings were very good at evoking the feelings through audio.

Playing hookey afternoon to go to this exhibit with @Jnieto25 !

Jnieto25 Only months and months of trying 4y
bookandbedandtea I'm envious! Was it wonderful?! I've been trying to get tickets for months! (Juggling the schedules of three people with the limited tickets is killing me!) Going to try this again Friday for tickets next Friday.🤞🏻) 4y
Coleen_Nieto @bookandbedandtea - It was so wonderful. I wasn't a huge fan of her art but a big fan of her as a person. Her art makes more sense to me now. I went a little nuts with the gift shop - 4 books, a paperweight, mints, and postcards - and a present for my friend but super worth it! Here's the trick, you have to log on each day around 9am and keep hitting refresh and tickets pop up every little while - I just bought tickets today. Good luck! (edited) 4y

Coleen_Nieto @bookandbedandtea also - I think 1/24 is the last day it's here. (edited) 4y
Coleen_Nieto @bookandbedandtea There are tickets available for next Thursday. You'll want to keep checking in the morning for tickets on Friday. 4y
Jnieto25 It was a fabulous day of art, shopping great conversation and great food ❤️ thank you for the awesome day❤️ 4y
bookandbedandtea @Coleen_Nieto I will definitely start checking first thing tomorrow morning for next Friday. I have high hopes! I'm not happy about it being so close to the end of the run but we've been trying, and failing, for months to go on weekends. I finally convinced my friends to go after work. 🤞🏻 4y
bookandbedandtea @Coleen_Nieto I feel the same way- love her, only kinda like her art- but I've been so eager to go to the exhibit and have no doubt I'll learn new appreciation for her. 😁 4y

4 stars. Now I want to learn about Frida. Before this book she was that weird mustachioed unibrow artist. Now after this I never realized I need to know more about hero. The book was simple and repetitive in places - but Arianna has a deep felt love and respect for Frida that shines on every page. If you know all about her this book might not be your jam but as an intro it was quite good.

⭐️ As much as it pains me to say this, and as much as I LOVE #Frida...I hated this book. It read like one long magazine article and the random quotes seemed to interrupt the flow of the book. Though it did have its informative moments it also often repeated itself and it felt like page-filler in certain areas. #notrecommended #litsy

Part pop guide book, part biography-- all homage to Frida Kahlo. I've been wanting to read more about Frida Kahlo the past few years and have shelved multiple biographies, and I think this has made me want to even more. I learned lots of details about her art and life I didn't know, but because of how this book is framed, it doesn't read at all like a biography. Also a bit repetitive for that same reason. Still a thoroughly enjoyable read.

1. What Would Frida Do?, Persephone Station, and Word by Word

2. Pride and Prejudice

3. "And it‘s the casual way in which she dabbled in affairs with both men and women— without ever making much of a “thing” about it or putting labels on her preferences —that has led her to become somewhat of an icon for the queer community." (What Would Frida Do?)

Pop biography? Self-help? I still don‘t quite know how to categorize this book. While I‘m not sure whether one should imitate Frida Kahlo‘s life, Davis has some fun insights into the artist, but she only scratches the surface of this complex woman. The book did get a bit repetitive with certain anecdotes, but she has an interesting perspective. #botm

My box came!! Do not lose the faith if the tracking hasn‘t updated on your package in over a week! I never got an email to confirm my replacement, so I have emailed them to cancel. 🤞🏻 it happens. Shipping is just insane this December.

Also I hope I‘m tight enough you can see the quotes on RBG and Madame VP. I‘m just so in love with these bookends! 💖

Chab256 Yay!! Maybe mine will appear with today's mail too! Lol! 4y

#BOTM knocked it out of the park with this December add-on! Not so much a biography as a how to live an inspired life, this book is a great, fast read! There‘s a lot about Friday‘s love of Diego Rivera and health woes, but also interesting details about her style and politics. I wish there had been a chapter about her love of animals (a big omission in my opinion). Overall, a great book about an iconic feminist communist artist! 🐒 🎨 🇲🇽 🌺

Megabooks Uggghhh!! My BOTM is stuck in Cincinnati and I really want to read this! (Like tracking hasn‘t updated in three days. ☹️) Glad to know it‘s good! 4y

I have been more excited about #botm‘s add-ons lately than their picks. If you haven‘t read The Office of Historical Corrections, it is totally awesome. At least I supported an indie when I purchased it!

I got People Like Her because it sounded fun, but more because I was interested in the tagged book. I‘m going to close my second account after I get my BFF BoTY choice in January because I haven‘t found much to like at BOTM lately. ☹️☹️

Hooked_on_books Yeah, I‘m cancelling after my free book next month. I‘ve been a member for 5 years and I‘ve just been so underwhelmed with their picks for most of this year. There have been some great months, but most have been a disappointment. They‘re obviously courting a different customer than me. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4y
Cinfhen I‘m skipping this month...I was really underwhelmed with the 5 choices....my hubby did buy me another year but I really think when my credits run out I‘m out too 4y
Thousand-Lives I also got People Like Her, and I placed a library hold on The Office of Historical Corrections. I‘ve had a lot of “meh” BOTM reads this year, but I look forward to that blue box so much I don‘t know if I can cancel when my credits run out. 🤷‍♀️ 4y

Megabooks @Hooked_on_books I agree about a different type of reader. I‘ve seen a huge shift away from things I‘d like the second half of 2020, especially in the true monthly choices. And I find most of the books go three for two on Amazon after a month, so if I‘m going to support some monolith, it doesn‘t really which. 🤷🏻‍♀️ if it‘s something I like, I‘ll just get it elsewhere. 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen see above to Holly and I‘ve been more excited about the add-ons, but you can‘t just get those, so it‘s a bust. 👎🏻👎🏻 4y
Megabooks @Thousand-Lives I know, it‘s so great getting that box each month. I haven‘t made a final decision yet. 4y
Deblovestoread Appreciate the tip about The Office...I would have given it a pass otherwise. 4y
Hollie I skipped...I thought The Office sounded promising, but I really don‘t like short stories so that one I might just get from the library. 4y
Megabooks @Kdgordon88 I hope you like it! 4y
Megabooks @Hollie I think there are quite a few readers that aren‘t into short stories. We like what we like! 4y
Chrissyreadit I picked Office and Holidaze for this go round. 4y
