A child reflects on the meaning of being Black in this moving and powerful anthem about a people, a culture, a history, and a legacy that lives on. Red is a rainbow color. Green sits next to blue. Yellow, orange, violet, indigo, They are rainbow colors, too, but My color is black . . . And theres no BLACK in rainbows. From the wheels of a bicycle to the robe on Thurgood Marshall's back, Black surrounds our lives. It is a color to simply describe some of our favorite things, but it also evokes a deeper sentiment about the incredible people who helped change the world and a community that continues to grow and thrive. Stunningly illustrated by Caldecott Honoree and Coretta Scott King Award winner Ekua Holmes, Black Is a Rainbow Color is a sweeping celebration told through debut author Angela Joys rhythmically captivating and unforgettable words.

4.5 ⭐This story is precious. It reminds people that black may not be in a rainbow, but it is still a color. But it‘s not only a color, it‘s a culture, it‘s a movement. The stanzas in the stories in this book is quite well done. While not rhyming it has a cadence and a flow. It‘s slam poetry at its finest. After the story, there are fantastic things such as a playlist of songs. There are explanations on some of the stanzas within the book, such as

LibrarianRyan dreams and reasons. And for me, one of my favorite parts was the timeline of black idioms in America. As a non-black person sometimes, I worry about accidentally saying the wrong thing. Because I know that through history, the meaning of words change. I love that this book talks about the different names Black people have been called through history, and why they‘re no longer in use. This book has a ton to offer and it‘s much more than your 14mo

I think this would be a grat book to read when learning about differences, diversity and inclusion. I think this is a cool analogy to talk about race.

This is a sweet story about how Black culture and history are so important and powerful. It is seen through the perspective of a child so it is very moving. I would definitely use this book in my classroom and I would recommend reading it to any age group. It received the Jane Addams Children's book award.

This story is about a little girl who looks at a crayon box and notices black is not in the rainbow. Throughout the story she notices all the beautiful things that are the color black. At the end of the story she uses the quote, “Our color is black“. This is a very powerful book to read to students to represent all children within the classroom. This story won the Jane Aadams Children's book award and was published in 2020.

“This is no black in rainbows. No black in green or blue. But in my box of crayons, Black is a rainbow too.”
This quote is extremely powerful, I feel like it shows that she can do anything she can imagine because their are so many good things that happen in this world by people that are just like her. Black is more than just a color for her, black is apart of everything good, like rainbows. Wow! So powerful!!

The words along with it describing all the different ways of how black is more than just a color. A very inspiring read with great artwork to capture the intensity and pride of the text! I enjoyed this book and how the illustrator used a variety of techniques in the composition of the drawings. On pages 7 and 8, the illustrator used article clippings that talked about the boycotts, marches, etc. as the sidewalk with a group of people walking over it. I believe that the illustrator wanted to convey that the people walking on the sidewalk were the ones that were fighting for equality and taking a stand for what they believe in.

This is an absolutely wonderful story to bring awareness to celebrating different cultures and celebrating the accomplishments that both strong men and women have done to fight for their rights and equality.

What a gorgeous book. If you look closely at the illustrations, each page has parts of text or articles of real-life historical persons and events. It was educational and beautiful. I love/need to own books that will inspire pride in one's heritage.

"Black is a color. Black is a culture."
