4.5⭐
This is a book that explores the implicit societal rules imposed on girls, presenting a realistic yet hopeful narrative. It stands out for its excellent writing, compelling characters, and powerful message. The narration by Julia Whelan was perfect.

It occurs to me that our story, whatever it might turn out to be, is far from over.
“Sorry I‘m late,” he says, shrugging a little shyly. “I needed to finish the book.”

I just started this one on audible, and it's caught my attention right away. First, I love Julia Whelan as a narrator, and she always makes for easy listening every time! Second, the premise sounds really interesting. I'm excited to see where this goes!

“And that,” Mr. Beckett says, leaning against the edge of his desk in third-period AP English, ankles crossed and dark eyes shining, “is the story of how Hemingway and Fitzgerald became the most famous literary frenemies of the twentieth century. Full disclosure, it probably won‘t be that useful to you on the AP exam, since for some reason they don‘t test your knowledge of hundred-year-old publishing gossip. But you can keep it in your back 💙💙💙

This book sold me on its cover, thou plot didn‘t hold a lot of water. Seems a great high school read; young male teacher being inappropriate to a student and the fallout SHE got from it. How the school didn‘t believe her and how fellow students made fun of her. Did like her article but didn‘t feel authentic in how the book showcased her reaction. Felt her reactions weren‘t intense enough to get me feel her. Love her supportive family and book club

Such a great and important book. I realized after reading this that all the books that we read in school only have a maximum of two minor female characters. It‘s unnerving how necessary this story is. Marin has her life turned upside down after her favorite teacher kisses her. Her best friend ditches her, people start yelling at her for “trying to get the best tracker fired”, and she can‘t even enjoy her favorite class anymore. 5🌟

Quick Blurb: Girl discovers the power of feminism when her teacher assaults her.

I rated this one 3/5 but maybe I should have rated it a 2. The cookie cutter romance overshadowed the story, which lacked diversity.

This book was just missing a lot of context. The idea and plot points were there but it needs more substance to be a good book. The biggest issue for me is the lack of realism. It didn‘t offer a thorough look into student life, and the effect and actions that would likely follow the school and people involved when a student comes forward about inappropriate actions made by a teacher.

“there are so many unspoken rules for navigating high school - for navigating life, maybe - that I can‘t help but try to figure out which one I broke to get myself into this situation. There are too many rules for girls.”
