Overboard!
Overboard!: A True Blue-water Odyssey of Disaster and Survival | Michael J. Tougias
3 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
From masterful storyteller Michael J. Tougias comes a new, heart-stopping true-life tale of maritime disaster, his most thrilling and amazing story yet. In May 2005, Tom Tighe, captain of a forty-five-foot-long sailboat named the Almeisan, and his first mate, Loch Reidy, welcomed three new crewmembers for a five-day voyage from Connecticut across the blue waters of the Gulf Stream to sun-drenched Bermuda. The new crew included forty-six-year-old Kathy Gilchrist, seventy-year-old Ron Burd, and thirty-four-year-old Chris Ferrer. Although Tighe had made the trip forty-eight times, with Reidy accompanying him on twenty of those voyages, the rest of the crew had joined to learn more about offshore sailing. Four days into the voyage, an enormous storm struck, sweeping two of the crew into the towering sea. The remaining crewmembers managed to stay aboard the vessel as it was slowly torn apart by the rampaging ocean. Overboard! follows the simultaneous desperate struggles of both those still on the boat and those fighting for their lives in the sea. The Coast Guard, alerted to the Almeisans distress, rushed to the storm-tossed scene. Their ensuing search and rescue mission proved so spectacularly difficult and dangerous that it was later selectedfrom among thousands of incidentsas the Guards search and rescue case of the year. Highly trained helicopter pilots and rescue swimmers alike found themselves in almost as much trouble as those trapped by the ferocious ocean. By turns tragic, thrilling, and deeply inspiring, Overboard! is a riveting, fast-paced story of death and survival at seaamazing, unforgettable, and all true.

BlueBowBooks

Engrossing survival story of a 5-person crew on a small sailboat originally intending to sail from Connecticut to the Bahamas before the boat hit an intense and long storm. Most of the crew were relatively novice sailors. This story really draws a person in! Now I know what true heroes rescue swimmers are. Nonfiction.

So definitely not book related but I just had to vent for a sec. Why oh why can't they leave good, classic movies alone?! I was at the movie theater tonight and saw a completely subpar trailer for a remake of Overboard and about died. Goldie Hawn is absolutely fabulous in the original, I love it so much! WHY?! 🙈

TK421 WHAT?!!!😡😡 7y
ReadingSusan Noooooo. 7y
ReadingsByTheC Totally agree. I saw it the other day. All I could do was shake my head. 7y

vlwelser I love this movie also. Definitely not watching a remake. 7y
GarthRanzz So not into the remake! I‘d rather watch the original a dozen times over. 7y
EvieBee Noooo! I love this movie. It can‘t be redone. 7y
BookBabe I haven‘t seen this! I‘ll have to look for it. 😊 The original, that is. 7y
The_Heeler_Booklife The remake looks dumb. 7y
swishandflick Whew, glad I'm not alone with these feelings! The original is so stinkin good, who's idea was this?! Haha. I literally came home and immediately put on the REAL version 😂 @TK421 @ReadingSusan @ReadingsByTheC @vlwelser @GarthRanzz @EvieBee 7y
swishandflick @BookBabe It's so good!!! Streaming on Starz right now if you have it 😄 7y
ReadingSusan Yeah it can‘t be remade! The whole point of the movie is Goldie and no one can do Goldie like Goldie. 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 I wish they would leave good movies alone. It‘s like no one can think of original ideas so they remake stuff. 7y
corycatelyn Ridiculous...you can't mess with this movie...my mom will roll over in her grave...🤦‍♀️ 7y
Rachbb3 I see a pattern of great old movies being remade and most are terrible. There are so many books that would make great movies!! Hollywood needs to stop trying to reinvent the wheel or hang their hats. Ok, stepping off the soapbox. 😛 7y
Melkyl I love this movie and have seen it so many times. Kurt and Goldie had some serious chemistry. I have no interest in seeing this remake; I will just stick with the original. 7y
Bookish.Heart They‘re remaking this? Ewww....the original is classic. Leave it alone 7y
JackOBotts Why why why?! I remember hearing about this remake a while back. Ugh! 🤬 7y
SandyW As I keep telling my husband, they remake all these movies because: we are not the target demographic! 7y
Eggs Agreed 7y
kamoorephoto Nooooooooo. I love this movie so much, every time it‘s on I can‘t resist watching it, which must be 200 times by now. REMAKE SHIT MOVIES NOT THE GOOD ONES. 7y
sparingqueen There hasn‘t yet been a reboot of a movie that is better than the original, IMO. Reboots just seem like a lazy cash grab to me. 7y
OrangeMooseReads Ugh! 🙄 Just find new ideas 7y
L_auren Also this movie can‘t really exist with the internet LOL 7y
swishandflick @L_auren Ha!! So true 😂 7y
TheLibrarian Agree. This makes me so mad and the remake looks so terrible! 7y
RadicalReader @swishandflick seriously perfect quote to add to the people who remake classics when there‘s nothing wrong with the original:” I don‘t have any doubts about my children‘s intelligence, I do HOWEVER HAVE SERIOUS DOUBTS ABOUT YOURS!” 7y
