Paper Moon
Paper Moon | Joe David Brown
12 posts | 10 read | 16 to read
The classic tale of a female Huck Finn, Peter Bogdanovich's film version of the book was nominated for four Academy Awards. Set in the darkest days of the Great Depression, this is the timeless story of an 11-year-old orphan's rollicking journey through the Deep South with a con man who just might be her father. Brimming with humor, pathos, and an irresistible narrative energy, this is American storytelling at its finest. Paper Moon is tough, vibrant, and ripe for rediscovery.

Apologies for being AWOL the last 2 months. Things have been rough around here and I got into a reading funk where I had a horrible time concentrating on reading books with my eyeballs (thank God for audiobooks). But I‘m happy to say I finally ended the streak by finishing up this beauty. Paper Moon is one of my favorite movies and the book is so fun. There are a lot more crazy adventures that Moze & Addie get up to in the book than the movie. ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 The last section of the book was great and left me wanting more. I‘d highly recommend both the book and the movie. 5⭐️ Going to try to catch up on all of my reviews over the next few days. I missed my Litsy family! 3y
Julsmarshall Great review and glad you‘re back! 3y
JenlovesJT47 @Julsmarshall thank you!! I missed it more than I realized. My Litsy people have gotten me through some tough times, as corny as that sounds. 🤓 #booknerdsunite I hope you‘re doing well and have a great day!! 🤗 3y
DaveGreen7777 Welcome back, Jen! 😊 3y

12 year old con artist, Addie Prey, travels the deep south with a scam artist and possible father, Long Boy. The situations they find themselves in and then have to extricate themselve from are entertaining. These big hearted con artists have a soft spot for those down on their luck and you cant help root for them. Loved everything about this book. A great ride through the deoression era south. Sweet, humorous and fun.

BookwormM Big hearted con artists you got me right there 6y

Paper Moon is a favorite movie and for some reason I like to read about The Depression. @Kaye sent me this book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I actually like the differences between movie and book...both are good! A solid 3/5 🌙s. Thanks Julie!

Kaye Glad you enjoyed it. It‘s a favorite . ♥️ 6y
Wife @Olivia306 Hi. I saw that you stacked this. I‘d be happy to send you my copy if you are in the USA. I don‘t keep most books due to lack of storage. If interested, my email is bumblebee21 at Comcast.net 6y
Olivia306 @Wife That‘s very kind, thank you very much. However, unfortunately, I‘m in the UK. 😞 But thank you very much for the generous offer. 6y
Wife Oh, sorry. It‘s just that international postage is so expensive. 🌹 6y
Olivia306 Don‘t worry about it. I completely understand. 😊 6y

@Maria514626 @kspenmoll @RedxoHearts I am looking forward to reading with all of you over the next few months. Here are some ideas: 1) Paper Moon, 2) The Velvet Hours, 3) Behold the Dreamers, and 4) Beautiful Poison. Maria suggested via email Pachinko which is approximately 490 pages. The #LMPBC suggestion is to keep page limit at 400, but I‘m ok if it‘s over a bit. I‘m excited to see all of your options. @suvata

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks The Velvet Hours 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️❤️❤️ 6y
RedxoHearts Did yall get my email earlier? I received one from you and then it said Maria replied but it didn't say anything. Then I couldn't reply to yours right either. I don't know what the issue was sorry guys 6y
RedxoHearts Actually the email may have been from katherine? I'm not sure but technology hasn't been my friend today apparently. 🤣 6y

Maria514626 @RedxoHearts Sorry about the E-Mail mixups! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ 6y
RedxoHearts I forgot to answer but they sound interesting. I have pretty much the same ranking as Maria wrote. I will have to add the first two to my TBR one day list. I will look through my books when I get home and tag yall like you did. 6y

I love a good many female characters, but I can't say I have one favorite. Addie Pray is right up there near the top of the list though. #riotgrams #favoritefemalecharacter

arubabookwoman I well remember that movie, but did not realize it was based on a book. 6y
laytonwoman3rd Well, now you have to read it, don't you?😉 6y

These are my remaining 1970s books to be read for #192019 challenge. Clearly I haven't made much progress this year with the decade of my birth. 😂

#JubilantJuly #PublishedInThe1970s

Cinfhen I'm behind in my #birthdaychallenge read as well 😬#somanybookssolittletime 7y
Vbrrgirl I'd read Watership Down first. One of my longtime favorites. 7y
MemoirsForMe Such great books here! So what's the birthday challenge? I missed that one. 🤔 7y

sprainedbrain @UwannaPublishme you might want to check out the tag #192019challenge for more info, but basically I am trying to read a book published in each year 1920-2019 for this challenge. I'm playing along with @Marchpane and started back in January... I'm hoping to finish by the middle of 2019. So far, I have read 28/100 but I'm not rushing. 😃 7y
sprainedbrain @UwannaPublishme for the birthday challenge, I'm not completely sure but I think they are doing something similar only starting with the year they were born. 7y
azulaco I haven't made a lot of progress either. Oh well. 7y
MemoirsForMe Thanks for the info. 🤗Sounds like fun. I may jump on the bandwagon, even if I'm very late. It would sure cover many books on my TBR. 7y
sprainedbrain @UwannaPublishme yay! It's not too late... lots of time left, and I had a bunch on my tbr that work for this challenge. 👍 7y
MemoirsForMe Cool! Count me in! Are you reading them in order or can you skip around? 7y
sprainedbrain @UwannaPublishme totally skipping around... I think everyone is. I would say you can even count books you have already read since January for the year of publication! 😁 7y
MemoirsForMe Woo hoo! Even better! Looking forward to sharing our progress with you and @Marchpane 😊😊😊 7y
sprainedbrain @UwannaPublishme the more the merrier!! 😊 7y

This is a gem! If Larry McMurtry wrote a book about a brilliant and tough little girl and her con man pseudo-father, you'd get Paper Moon. Funny, light and very sweet. Good post All Hallows' Read cleanser!

Remember the film Paper Moon? This is the book it comes from. Tatum O'Neal at around 7 years old plays Addie (orphaned) and her real-life father Ryan plays Mose who grabs her up purportedly to drop her off at her aunt's in St. Joseph, Missouri. Published in 1971, the story takes place during the Great Depression as these two share adventures on the road. Both book and film are terrific! #bestkids #octphotochallenge

JanuarieTimewalker13 @ApoptyGina69 love this film!! Just finished it! So good! Had no idea it was based on a book until Bogdanovich stated it in commentary!! 8y
