Like all good Chinese children, Andrea Tang is doing her best to fulfil all her mother's plans for her life: she's on track to become partner at a top law firm in Singapore, she has a beautiful apartment in the right postcode and a perfect boyfriend who is practically made of husband material. Except that those plans are unravelling fast: there's an unfairly attractive new lawyer out to steal her promotion, she has credit-card debt up to her eyeballs, her perfect boyfriend is now her perfect ex-boyfriend and the last single cousin in her family just got engaged, leaving her exposed to romantic meddling on all sides... For fans of Crazy Rich Asians and Bridget Jones's Diary comes a hilarious story of love, friendship and the most intrusive people in the world: family.

Hmm. Well, if it's an ancient Chinese proverb, maybe there's something in it?

Appropriately, it starts at Chinese New Year, which happens to be coming up in a couple of weeks.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was fun—described as a mix of Crazy Rich Asians and Bridget Jones‘s Diary, and I think that‘s probably right. I didn‘t really buy a main relationship in the book, but otherwise a fun read and likable characters.

About to start reading one of the books I picked up Thursday while browsing the library for the first time in over a year. (They're now letting patrons make reservations to browse at particular branches.)

Andrea Tang is the 2020‘s Bridget Jones. Told in diary entry form, this romcom follows single Singaporean lawyer, Andrea and her dating exploits as she tries to satisfy her Tiger Mom‘s potential list of perfect daughter obligations. Light & fun. Audio narration was charming. A tad too long but the payoff was worth it😊#BrainCandy 🧁🍭🍦#ReadingAsia21

Librarybelle I may have to consider this one! #BrainCandy is so good sometimes! 4y

I really enjoy this book! It is hailed as Crazy Rich Asians meets Bridget Jones and I can see why. It is written in diary form and Andrea Tang is the MC. She seems to have it all great career, fab friends and great life in Singapore. But family expectations means she should get married. She meets a few men, but feels a connection with her work colleague Suresh, but he is supposed to be getting married. It is a fun read!

#Lowexpectations but I‘m not in the mood for anything heavy and it works for #ReadingAsia21 #Singapore @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Librarybelle It definitely sounds like this one would not be heavy...I see in the Litsy description it‘s for fans of Bridget Jones‘s Diary. Good luck! 4y

After 7 days I‘m only 37 pages in, and it‘s just got too much extraness and its sadly not what I was expecting so I decided to move.

ElleSkel Oh no! I had high hopes for that one! 4y
kimmypete1 @ElleSkel me too! ☹️ I‘ll give it another go down the road. Sometimes it‘s just the mood. Or possibly just need any expectations adjustment. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (edited) 4y

I loved, loved, loved this novel. Andrea Tang is so relatable-- her attempts to balance family expectations and work and relationships, plus her phone addiction (oh boy, does that ring true.) The short diary entry chapters made this a fun read-- much like a modern BRIDGET JONES, and I loved following the romantic travails of not only Andrea, but her cousin and friends as well. This was escapism at its finest. Really enjoyable.

Pie just came out of the oven and I‘m about halfway through this great read. I highly recommend marrying a man who bakes and picking this book up.

A little too edgy for me at times but a fun romp nevertheless. Needed a change of pace from some of my other recent reads and this filled the bill. ⭐️⭐️⭐️+

I get why the diary style entries remind folks of Bridget Jones, but in several ways it reminded me of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend because while a amusingly told look at the life of a high powered single lawyer on the partner track in Singapore, it's also a look at how you can get sucked into a life that you never intended to lead and ignore the options (and the hotness) right in front of you.

This is really more of a 3.5 out of 5 stars for me; I kept thinking this is trying too hard to be...pithy? Frothy? The problem is that I could never get into actually caring for Andrea. It was a fun and easy read, but it was all sugar and no substance; I just didn‘t really care what happened to her. I did however love all the side character. But it‘s sad when I love everyone else except the heroine.

This audiobook was so much fun to listen to! Some similarities to Crazy Rich Asians, but these people are just regular rich instead of crazy rich, and it‘s more of a straight-up rom com than a satire disguised as a rom com. I enjoyed every minute of it and I hope Ho gets to publish the sequel she‘s working on (hint, hint, publishers!)

This was fun! I enjoyed the plot overall which is definitely more relatable to me than the world of Crazy Rich Asians. The main character is not necessarily likeable the whole book but very relatable for me. The romance triangle was particularly interesting: NEEDS/DEMANDS of her mother vs who she wants but is not available. I also thought the work dynamic of promotions added another element to make things very complicated!

Overall I enjoyed this book. It took a while to get into, because I read the first few chapters a bit too critically. It was as though the author couldn't decide if she was writing this for a white audience, or if she should decide to not explain things that are generally acceptable in Asian (Chinese) cultures. Part of this was also the reason why I was 50 pages in before realizing it was an epistolary novel.

Its billed as Crazy Rich Asians meets Bridget Jones's Diary - extremely accurate. I loved it, it doesnt have the super over the top, laugh out loud moments like Crazy Rich Asians but the love story is epic

Andrea Tang is attempting to balance navigating the worlds of work (trying to make partner in her law firm), dating, and family in Singapore while at the dangerously spinsterish age of 33. The pressure on her to marry exerted by her family is decidedly firm. This is a fun book with good humor and a whiff of Bridget Jones. Plus I love the title and cover.

4.5 stars This might be an overly biased review because I can 100% relate to Andrea and her friends, having lived and worked and dated in Singapore in my early 30s. Some of the situations are (maybe) highly exaggerated but I recognize the bases in truth. Fifteen years removed from these challenges, I can now remember those years with some fondness. Thanks to Last Tang Standing for reminding me. I really enjoyed the trip down memory lanes.

I enjoyed #LastTangStanding more than I expected. The narrating character is pretty hilarious. She tells the story in a diary format. Her family is cultural in their desire for her to be successful but also married by 30 so she's on the hunt for a man. Her group of friends all seem to have slight drinking problems which adds to the fun, especially on dating apps. Ho wrote the perfect book for summer reading, with a lot of humor & a bit of heart.

Reggie This sounds great, stacked! 5y
