It was a gift to learn about Dara‘s journey as a naturalist. His love of the natural world, teaching others and protecting the planet is profound. His willingness to share his challenges in this journey is impactful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+ out of 5

A very frank and passionate diary by Dara (fifteen years old at the point of writing and autistic). It documents the uprooting of his home and how he relates to nature and his increasing prominence as an environmental activist. His descriptions of his encounters with the nature around him were evocative and lyrical. The way that he talks about his autism was enlightening.

An Irish teenager with Asperger's and a deep love of the natural world becomes an inspiration for many along the way as he shares his love and advocates on behalf of the environment. It's a beautifully written book of a young man learning about himself, teaching its readers about the struggles of those on the spectrum, and to appreciate the natural world around them.
About a family of five where everyone except the dad is autistic. A story about how if feels like to be different and get along in the world. But also a story about loving nature and animals, and doing your part to preserve it.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wonderful memoir written by a teenager. His descriptions of nature and life with autism are moving, heartfelt, and eye-opening.
She suggests Castle Ward, a National Trust estate made famous by Game of Thrones - I‘ve never seen the TV series, I‘m a little too young, but I can imagine it all. Castle. Courtyard. Turrets. And when we arrive, Lorcan groans at the sight of all the tour buses and the people walking around in costume. They all want their little bit of screen magic! A selfie for Twitter or Instagram. I hope they know that magic exists everywhere.
A goldeneye duck. They‘re so beautiful. Perhaps it‘s here alone for the winter because there‘s no female around. We rarely think of all that effort being made below the water, those webbed propellers whirring so the bird can glide with such ease and grace on the river. It‘s just like being autistic. On the surface, no one realises the work needed, the energy used, so you can blend in and be like everyone else.
I very much loved this book. It was written so wonderfully and full of love. It made me realise I hardly get out into nature at all.
A beautifully written, poetic, book - amazing that the author writes so well at such a young age. As well as the nature writing, there‘s his honest and open perspective on his autism, including what triggers him and what calms him, as well as comparisons to the rest of his family, nearly all of whom are autistic too.
Serendipitously we went for a walk by the river this morning and saw a flash of electric blue - a kingfisher fishing. 💙
I am really excited to read these two nonfiction books this month. #nonfictionbooks
14-year-old Dara McAnulty writes about his life, his passion for nature and his family. I thought this was quite wonderful - engaging, informative and, at times, challenging. Dara writes from the perspective of an autistic teenager; his explanations of how that plays out on a daily basis, and how he (and his family, three of whom are also autistic; all of whom are ‘close as otters‘) find coping mechanisms are beautifully written. The importance
What an interesting and important book this is! Its no wonder it's already a prize winner!Diary of a Young Naturalist is a wonderfully poetic collection of diary entries through the seasons in Northern Ireland told from the perspective of an autistic 15 year old as he navigates his school, home life and work as a conservationist and environmentalist. I was blown away by his gorgeous writing and passion for the natural world. #bookreview
Dara McAnulty is a quite remarkable writer, not only sharing his love of the natural world, but also his experience of it (good and bad) as an autistic teenager. Also, his family are awesome- and ‘close as otters‘, which is just a lovely expression.
Another day, another book started because I forgot to sync my old kindle before I got on the train. So far, this is really quite lovely. It‘s also my #bookspin this month.
#currentlyreading for my teacher librarian book club. Apparently it‘s divisive... we shall see. #memoir #spectrum #naturalworld #hardback #family #conservation #environmentalist #Ireland Plus #spikyplant that cut me. #ouch
