Weird but Normal
Weird but Normal: Essays | Mia Mercado
19 posts | 15 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
Birth control. Body hair removal cream. Boobs. Its all weird, but also pretty normal. Navigating racial identity, gender roles, workplace dynamics, and beauty standards, Mia Mercado's hilarious essay collection explores the contradictions of being a millennial woman, which usually means being kind of a weirdo. Whether its spending $30 on a candle that smells like an ocean that doesnt exist, offering advice on how to ask about someones race (spoiler: just dont, please?), quitting a job that makes you need shots of whiskey on your lunch break, or finding a more religious experience in the skincare aisle at Target than your hometown Catholic church, Mia brilliantly unpacks what it means to be a professional, absurdly beautiful, horny, cute, gross human. Essays include: Depression Isnt a Competition but Why Arent I Winning? My Dog Explains My Weekly Schedule Mustache Lady White Friend Confessional Treating Objects Like Women With sharp humor and wit, Mia shares the awkward, uncomfortable, surprisingly ordinary parts of life, and shows us why its strange to feel fine and fine to feel strange.

My brown butter cupcakes are all dressed up and ready for afternoon tea!

I‘m conflicted about the tagged book. Mercado makes solid observations, she‘s self-aware, and she‘s often very funny, so I feel like I should love it—but y‘all, there‘s this VIBE I can‘t quite pin down. I think maybe it reminds me of those celebrity memoirs written specifically to shore up someone‘s personal brand and prove their comedic worth. Not BAD, but… #audiobaking

Mercado is witty, self-effacing, and self-aware. Her essays follow suit. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

AutumnRLS This book is currently $2.94 in paperback with Prime right now. I totally just ordered it. It sounds like it's right in my wheelhouse. 3y
Awk_Word_Smith @AutumnRLS I will admit I literally LOL‘d and I did it often. 3y

Heading to the beach and I‘ve resolved to actually finish this ARC (but not really an advance anymore)—so far a funny beach-read.

So fresh in format/style and so laugh-out-loud funny in narrative and voice.

Enjoyed the first half more than the second half. I liked listening to the author read her essays and the 2000s nostalgia. Some parts were snort out loud funny, others were strange.

The first one that I had to use a non-holiday book! Especially scary that these have all been owned digital books 📚🤫

I‘ve got a super fun event tomorrow! Lots of jokes and holiday fun. I‘m going to spend today highlighting some of the amazing authors who are joining me for it.

Mia is a humorist and essayist whose collection literally made me laugh out loud. Her book would be amazing for any Midwestern millennial in your life.

It wasn't THAT weird; I'm way weirder 🙃
But I liked this short little collection of essays in the vein of Samantha Irby but nowhere near as funny. Enjoyable millennial-type observations on life, being a woman, growing up in the Midwest and race. The #audiobook is read by the author which was good!

Never before have I felt so seen and so attacked by a single sentence.

“The idea of things has always been much more exciting to me, a person who loves to say (he) is going to do a thing without actually having to do the thing.”

The struggle is real.

TheSpineView Yes it is! 4y
Kloves2read So true! I don‘t know how some people get the chance to read 100 books a year?! Quite a few of my Goodreads friends have, and I am so jealous! 4y
Awk_Word_Smith @Kloves2read Goodreads is a lie! Half the books I‘ve “read” in there are ebooks for my toddler son. 😂 4y

I‘m gonna need life to chill out. This TBR stack is not gonna read itself!

(I read ‘To Kill A Mockingbird‘ every year. I suppose it‘s not a true TBR.)

sgoffe Hope you enjoy Gumption - I love Nick Offerman - I've found his books to be full of positivity and praise for others. 4y
Awk_Word_Smith @sgoffe This one has been sitting around for TOO long. I met Offerman at ALA San Francisco many years ago as he was promoting this book, and got an autograph in it to boot! 4y

Mia Mercado writes humorous personal essays about life: her childhood, the realities of being a woman, life as a Millennial, being racially ambiguous and more. It‘s quite uneven and some of the pieces were hard for me (a Gen-Xer) to relate to, but the funny parts were truly funny enough for me to give this a soft pick. The childhood poop story is a standout.

Bit of a switch from the last few books I‘ve read. I enjoy essay type books like this very much. This one is alright but still entertaining so far.

I am so spoiled with #bookmail today! Soubhi, Helen, thank you so much! I‘m so excited for these. ☺️

Soubhiville Oh yay! The birthday that just keeps giving! I‘m glad they arrived. Happy Birthday some more 🤗 4y
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville Thank you! I consider this my birthday “extension.” 😬😆 4y
squirrelbrain That took a while! Sorry it‘s late but at least it extended your birthday! 😘 4y
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain I‘m delighted regardless of when it arrived! Mail is always a bit slow here, but it really slowed down about 2 months ago. No idea why. I‘ve had to put in 2 online inquiries for packages that just sat in Honolulu for weeks. Annoying, but there are far worse problems to have! 4y
vivastory I bought No Beast etc a couple of weeks ago. Really looking forward to it! 4y

Not related to this book (it is good so far), but I‘m not a fan of this new Libby interface... Anyone else dislike it? #libby #libbyapp

Laughterhp I noticed that today. I don‘t really like it, but I don‘t really look at the app while I use it. 4y
hes7 Mine changed today, and I think it looks ridiculous. It gives a little more information now, but really, I was fine with how it was before. 4y
Bookwormjillk Is it a new look? I thought I had changed a setting and couldn‘t figure out how to get it back🤪 4y

Karkar How weird mine did not update and I do not have one in the App Store. 4y
candority @Laughterhp Yeah, that‘s true. Although I do like to look through the chapters and don‘t like the new way the menu functions! 4y
candority @hes7 Agreed! There has to be a better way to display that information, right?! 4y
candority @Bookwormjillk At least now you know 😂 4y
candority @Karkar I didn‘t have an official update on the App Store either. I finished an audiobook and when I opened a new one for the first time, this is how it looked? I‘m sure it‘ll update for you soon 4y
BookmarkTavern Me! Good grief I really hate it. That tracking thing at the bottom is just so distracting. 4y
sprainedbrain Not loving it! I thought I broke something at first. 😂 4y
candority @ozma.of.oz Right?! There is no reason for it to be that big! 4y
candority @sprainedbrain Ahaha me too 😂 4y
Books88 I feel the same way!!!! I liked the version before 😂 4y
candority @AJBowers Hopefully we get used to it! (edited) 4y
rachelm Same on the book and same on the app!! 4y
candority @rachelm I‘d be interested in hearing your final thoughts on the book. I started to lose interest near the end unfortunately. 4y
