Everyone on the Moon is Essential Personnel
Everyone on the Moon is Essential Personnel | Julian K. Jarboe
10 posts | 6 read | 12 to read
"In this debut collection of body-horror fairy tales and mid-apocalyptic Catholic cyberpunk, memory and myth, loss and age ... are the tools of storyteller Jarboe, a talent in the field of queer fabulism. Bodily autonomy and transformation, the importance of negative emotions, unhealthy relationships, and bad situations [inform the] staggering and urgent question of how [to] build and nurture meaning, love, and safety in a larger world/society that might not be 'fixable'"--Publisher marketing.

Winner of the 2021 Lambda Award for Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror, this short-story collection is variously described as body-horror fairy tales and/or queer fabulism and it‘s every bit as good as I was led to believe. Standouts for me were “Self Care,” “Estranged Children of Storybook Houses,” and “The Nothing Spots Where Nobody Wants to Stay.” Definitely an interesting collection and one I will likely revisit in the future.

IndoorDame I hope it‘s also winning some awards for cover design! 2y

When you grab coffee with a fellow book lover, of course you have to include a trip to the bookstore. Tagged book was my friend‘s recommendation. The Plot has been on my radar for a while as have the other three books—Who Fears Death, Piranesi, and Riot Baby—which all came from the sale shelves. Book trivia game was a present from a friend I saw yesterday. A weekend full of bookish delights!

Finding the line that is the bases for the title was the opposite of what I had hoped it would mean was... hard. It made me even more sad for the human race.

I loved this collection of speculative short stories--some fantasy, some science fiction, some horror. So inventive and unique, tackling subjects like spirituality, (trans) bodies, otherness, climate change, queer solidarity in the apocalypse, and more. Jarboe displays an amazing range of narrative voices and stunning writing, full of bold images and mystical undertones at times, and raw humour at others. Highly recommended! #QueerBooks
