Any Known Blood | Lawrence Hill
7 posts | 8 read | 9 to read
Contains extra content -- insights, interviews and more! Langston Cane V is thirty-eight, divorced and childless, and has just been fired for sabotaging a government officials speech. The eldest son of a white mother and prominent black father, Langston feels more acutely than ever the burden of his illustrious family name. After a run-in with his father in Oakville, Langston takes off for Baltimore, where he embarks on a remarkable quest to uncover his familys pastand his own sense of self. At once elegant and sensuous, wry and witty, Any Known Blood slips effortlessly from the slave trade of 19th-century Virginia to the modern, predominantly white suburbs of Oakville, Ontarioonce a final stop on the Underground Railroad. Rich in historical detail, Any Known Blood is an engrossing tale about one mans attempt to find himself through unearthing and giving voice to those who came before him.

Trying to get in some reading as my munchkin who‘s getting 3 (!!!!) teeth at the same time naps for who knows how long 😅 I enjoyed The Book of Negroes so much I wanted to try something else by the same author. About 100 pages in and it‘s enjoyable, though not as gripping as Book of Negroes (so far).

Readergrrl I loved Book of Negroes! Did you know that they published an illustrated and annotated version? So good! 4y
Jessieleah @Readergrrl oh no I didn‘t know that! I‘ll definitely have to look into this 😊 4y

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this. I read the Book of Negroes several years ago, and have been meaning to read another Lawrence Hill book ever since. I didn't realize until part way through that this was written in the 90s. I liked the focus on a Canadian community and the history of Black families post-slavery. The story also takes place in Baltimore much of the time, making me want to visit that city.

This list I found is giving me some more ideas for @Book_Fiend_Melissa 's #ReadCanada challenge... Thought I'd post it for anyone else doing the challenge (might take some research to figure out provinces though) or just looking to read books by black authors/about black experience...

MsMelissa Thank you for posting this! 5y
llwheeler @Book_Fiend_Melissa np! I'm thinking about what books I'll read for the challenge, so I'm working on some tentative list posts... Not sure when I'll get them up though, I'm slow these days lol 5y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira Thank you. I‘m also working on my list. I‘ve chosen to mostly go with women writers. I will also post my initial picks soon. It will be fun to see what the actual read list will be. Library availabilities and as we go influences, will determine those. 🤗 5y

MsMelissa I‘ve also been giving thought to my list. I have my books for B.C., and Manitoba picked out already. I‘m trying to go with what I already have on my shelves, but that may not end up being possible. 5y
llwheeler @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira nice! I'm looking forward to seeing your picks 🙂 I'm always looking to read more women writers. 5y
llwheeler @Book_Fiend_Melissa yeah, I'm trying to use owned tbr books too but turns out I have a lot of Ontario and less of the others, oops... 5y
Cathythoughts Oh great , Thankyou. I‘ve been researching a bit , but I‘m a little lost , so this is good to see. I have one book The Girls by Lori Lansens & it‘s set in Ontario... I may start with that soon 🤔 @Book_Fiend_Melissa 5y
MsMelissa @Cathythoughts reach out if you need any help. Some provinces and territories are much harder than others! 5y
llwheeler @Cathythoughts absolutely agree with @Book_Fiend_Melissa! Cbc books has lots of other book lists too. 5y
Cathythoughts Thanks very helpful! I‘ve taken a leap of faith & ordered Bone Black by Carol Rose for Saskatchewan 🤞🏻 5y
Cathythoughts I think I‘ll hold off on deciding about Ontario .... so many to choose from there ! 5y
llwheeler @Cathythoughts there definitely are! 5y

#riotgrams time! (Sorry for the post overload, I was busy all day so I'm having all my Litsy fun at once)

This one is partially #setnearwhereyoulive, or in this case, lived. Parts of this take place in Oakville, Ontario which is where I grew up. Right at the beginning, the narrator walks through the square where I used to go with my dad to collect chestnuts for knockers. Then he heads to my favourite coffee shop (which is unfortunately no longer)

Melissa_J I grew up in Oakville, too! 8y
TheKidUpstairs @Melissa_J really!? Small world! He goes to the Green Bean 😊 I only found out it was closed recently when I went to visit my parents. Downtown is not what it used to be! 8y
Melissa_J @TheKidUpstairs I haven't been back in a few years. My parents moved outside of the GTA and I'm in Ottawa. My sister is in Burlington though, and teaches in Oakville. I had a summer job at Oakville Place in high school! 8y
TheKidUpstairs @Melissa_J I had to run into Oakville Place the other week. It makes me sad that there's no bookstore there anymore. I have such fond memories of the old WH Smith. 8y

Because I enjoyed Someone Knows My Name so much, wanted to try this. Maybe it could be called almost-historical fiction? Too long, but still glad I found this.
