A Fine Dessert: Four Centuries, Four Families, One Delicious Treat
A Fine Dessert: Four Centuries, Four Families, One Delicious Treat | Emily Jenkins
8 posts | 9 read | 10 to read
A New York Times Best Illustrated Book From highly acclaimed author Jenkins and Caldecott Medalwinning illustrator Blackall comes a fascinating picture book in which four families, in four different cities, over four centuries, make the same delicious dessert: blackberry fool. This richly detailed book ingeniously shows how food, technology, and even families have changed throughout American history. In 1710, a girl and her mother in Lyme, England, prepare a blackberry fool, picking wild blackberries and beating cream from their cow with a bundle of twigs. The same dessert is prepared by an enslaved girl and her mother in 1810 in Charleston, South Carolina; by a mother and daughter in 1910 in Boston; and finally by a boy and his father in present-day San Diego. Kids and parents alike will delight in discovering the differences in daily life over the course of four centuries. Includes a recipe for blackberry fool and notes from the author and illustrator about their research. From the Hardcover edition.

My library hold of this came in last night. 4 families over 4 centuries make blackberry fool. The composition of the families and the cooking technology both change over time. I‘ve never had fruit fool but now I totally want to try it!

julieclair This sounds like a book I would adore! Added to my stack. 🙂 2y

Being a history buff, this was a very interesting illustration of the evolution of cooking “technology” over the course of 300 years and a sweet story of the unchanging joy of parent & child cooking together and the passing on of the tradition of licking the spoon. Recommend.

This was a wonderful story about the making of blackberry fool through four hundred years! The implements changed, as did women‘s roles in the kitchen and even slavery. What‘s funny is after reading MISS MAPP, there‘s a whole section on her famous fool, a recipe which Elizabeth refuses to divulge. Had no idea what “fool” was, so it was lovely to learn about its origins here. 🥣🥣🥣🥣🥣

This is such a fun book! We keep meaning to make Blackberry fool all the ways through history but gathering and cleaning a bundle of sticks and whipping cream for 15 minutes is...well let's just say even thinking about it makes me appreciate my kitchen aid even more. 😁

The kiddo masterminded a fine dessert. She did everything except melt the chocolate.

Dessert! Cheesecake and a snifter of blackberry brandy for me, chocolate dipped strawberries on the house for us to share, and tartufo for @MrBook . Yummy! 😋 Love the heart-shaped raspberry drizzle decorations. It's all in the details! ❤

Bookzombie I had to look up tartufo 🙂 It looks and sounds yummy. 8y
