Everyman | Philip Roth

Philip Roth's new novel is a candidly intimate yet universal story of loss, regret, and stoicism. The best-selling author of The Plot Against America now turns his attention from "one family's harrowing encounter with history" (New York Times) to one man's lifelong skirmish with mortality. The fate of Roth's everyman is traced from his first shocking confrontation with death on the idyllic beaches of his childhood summers, through the family trials and professional achievements of his vigorous adulthood, and into his old age, when he is rended by observing the deterioration of his contemporaries and stalked by his own physical woes. A successful commercial artist with a New York ad agency, he is the father of two sons from a first marriage who despise him and a daughter from a second marriage who adores him. He is the beloved brother of a good man whose physical well-being comes to arouse his bitter envy, and he is the lonely ex-husband of three very different women with whom he's made a mess of marriage. In the end he is a man who has become what he does not want to be. The terrain of this powerful novel -- Roth's twenty-seventh book and the fifth to be published in the twenty-first century -- is the human body. Its subject is the common experience that terrifies us all. Everyman takes its title from an anonymous fifteenth-century allegorical play, a classic of early English drama, whose theme is the summoning of the living to death.

This just keeps getting worse. Do I think Roth was a great writer ,yes. Do I think he was a nice person, no. Blake Bailey. If he is guilty of the things he is accused of,horrible. But why destroy the papers? I immediately wonder what was lost in Sylvia Plaths papers, how Ted and others destroyed documents of great literary value cuz they didn‘t want to look bad. https://newrepublic.com/article/162475/philip-roth-blake-bailey-documents-biogra...

vivastory I saw that there was another Roth bio that was either just published or it's going to be published soon. 3y
Leftcoastzen @vivastory I am reading the Bailey Roth bio I bought before Bailey issue blew up. I still find it useful to know more about Roth .Roth‘s mother preferred him to his brother Sandy , enough to put Sandy in therapy to deal with it .Can be hard to be the woman in the life of that guy !🙄 3y

Painfully boring and I really didn‘t care about any of the characters‘ stories. I skimmed through the last 50 pages hoping something would catch my attention with no success. Maybe it was just the wrong time for this book?

Book & chocolate in between classes. This was given to me by a coworker- it seems like a short read perfect for break times.

And yes, that is a minion peeking out of my book - I ran out of bookmarks, and a minion card was the only thing I had around. 😅

MayJasper You've been robbed. Snickers are longer than that. 6y
laur89 @MayJasper Hahaha 😂 We have a secret teacher staff of fun-sized candy. Makes us happy after a stressful class. 😉 6y

I didn't find the characters quite as interesting in this one but it's still a very enjoyable read. I didn't put it down until I'd finished it. I'd not even heard of this author until he recently died. I didn't grow up in America, that's my only excuse.

Breakfast on the deck today, watching it rain. I could sit here and listen to it hit the canopy all day. Happy Sunday, #Littens! Hope you all have a safe and peaceful day.

Dolly I'd love to read and eat. I notice you have a... is it called a book weight? Does this work on only some books? 6y
goodbyefrancie @Dolly I've had it for a while, and only had one book that didn't work well with it. It was a very stiff spine on a softcover book. Other than that one, I love this thing. I stumbled across it by accident - I had no idea these things existed! This one is leather, about $25 on Amazon. 6y
Dolly Thanks for the info. I've seen them at yard sales. Hoping I'll see another.🙏🏻 6y

Incredible. Depressing. Real. This is a dead man's tale. An unhealthy old man is filled with regret and sorrow over his past while struggling (resentfully) to cope with serious hereditary physical ailments. I don't know how one could read this book and not ponder his or her own mortality. Roth is truly an American literary god. #philiproth #litsyatoz
