Nola is such an interesting character. I'm thinking she might be neurodiverse in some way, but it hasn't been addressed (yet). Hopefully, it is! For now, she's kind of like a Wednesday Addams, but in the real world lol Very curious to see what the author does with her.

Eve wasn't even supposed to be in these caves.

Loved The Overnight Guest, so decided to explore her backlist 📚📚📚

SassyPants617 I also loved the overnight guest and decided to read her other stuff. Started with this one. I‘m not too far in, but I‘m really liking it so far. 1y
ShyBookOwl @SassyPants617 Oh, nice! I enjoyed this one ALMOST as much as Overnight Guest 😄 1y

Really enjoyed listening to this one! I‘ve always enjoyed this author‘s work! It‘s told from three perspectives which made a nice balance. I liked the timeline of the past and the present. It‘s suspenseful until the end and I would highly recommend this one!

Today‘s Prompt: UNPREDICTABLE

A twisty, fantastic, “unpredictable” tale with characters that lived with secrets and lies and that made me nervous at what they were doing.

Do not miss it. You will be on the edge of your seat by the end. 5/5

I could have done without the animal abuse triggers, but other than that this was a super crazy, fast-paced read!

This story is based on a cold case murder of a teen girl, Eve, from 1999 that is reopened because of new evidence. Her former best friend, Maggie, is the one now investigating the case. We get to see the story told from Maggie, Eve, and Nola, Eve‘s sister. There are several well done red herrings and the mystery aspect is pretty great. This book does have disturbing parts that could be triggers.

LiteraryinPA This has been on my TBR. Would you mind sharing the nature of the triggers in a hidden post? There are some things I‘m not up for reading about right now and it would be helpful to know. Thanks! 5y
JoScho @LiteraryinLititz of course! There was a relationship between an adult and a teenager but it isn‘t described in graphic detail. There is an abusive relationship and some scenes bordering on animal cruelty. None of it is very detailed. I can‘t deal with animal cruelty at all and I was ok. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions about it 😊 5y
LiteraryinPA @JoScho Thanks! That helps a lot. Animal cruelty is my big thing too, but if you are sensitive to that too and were ok, and since I know about it in advance, I think I‘ll still read it. The plot sounded great! 5y
JoScho @LiteraryinLititz yeah that is a big hell no for me and I thought i would have to bail but it wasn‘t too bad-i still didn‘t like it but it wasn‘t unbearable. 5y

Loved this one, as I have all her others. 💜💜💜
Near and dear to my heart because they are all based in Iowa, my home state. 🖤💛🖤💛
Years after the unsolved murder of a girl, the case is reopened. Her best friend is a detective and leading the investigation. So many secrets in this small town are about to come out. A thrilling whodunnit until the very end!

suzie.reads I picked this one for Iowa for the #ReadtheUSA2020 great review 😊 5y

This was a page turner – plenty of suspects, lots of suspense, and danger round every corner. That said, I wasn‘t feeling any of the characters, which kept me from being as vested in the outcome as I would have liked, but still a stellar read. Recommended for readers who want to be kept on their toes. Not recommended for those who want to scoop the mystery.

A multiple voice story which takes the reader back to 1995 and the murder of a 15 year old girl and then forward to present day and her best friend who is now a policewoman, assigned to reopen the case on the basis of new evidence. This book had me hovering between suspects, thinking I knew what happened only to have each theory debunked and the emergence of a new suspect. A brilliant tale, skillfully told with empathy and an ultimate twist!

Not my favorite Gudenkauf novel, but not bad either. This is How I Lied follows Maggie as she investigates the case of her bffs death 25 years prior. The book alternates between Maggie and Nola, the creepy and incredibly unsettling younger sister of the bff, in the present, and Eve‘s very final day of life and the events that led to her death. I think I was so unsettled by Nola I had a hard time enjoying the story as much as I‘d have otherwise.

Another great read from Gudenkauf! Set in a small #Iowa town, this one revolves around the 1995 murder of a fifteen year old girl and with multiple narrators, across both timelines, makes for an engaging and well-plotted read! I thoroughly enjoyed this one- and as always, am left eager to see what she will write next! Thanks, #NetGalley!
