Eat, and Love Yourself
Eat, and Love Yourself | Sweeney Boo
14 posts | 19 read | 12 to read
A story about Mindy, a woman living with an eating disorder who has to learn how to love herself again. In pursuit of the perfect body, Mindy buys the low-fat diet products and the glossy magazines which promise the secret to losing weight. One night, while perusing the aisles of the neighborhood convenience store for a midnight snack, she finds a new product. A chocolate bar called Eat and Love Yourself. On a whim, Mindy buys the curious candy, not knowing that with every piece of chocolate she eats, she will be brought back to a specific moment of her past -- helping her to look at herself honestly, learn to love her body the way it is, and accepting love. Perhaps, she will even realize that her long lost high school best friend, Elliot, was more than just a friend Sweeney Boo (Love Is Love) presents an honest and uncompromising look at how we form our self-image, the eating disorders that haunt our most private moments and what it takes to learn to love ourselves again.

Graphic novel that discusses self esteem and eating disorders. The story was vague. I understood the point it was trying to make. It felt like it was more about self esteem, than the eating disorder, but they could go hand in hand. I will say if you have a friend that struggles with either this might be something that might start the conversation. 7 out 10! Most libraries have it on libby.

I'm of two minds on this one.
I appreciate that it doesn't suggest a magic fix, just a gentle place to start in rebuilding a healthy relationship to your own self image/combatting body dysmorphia, and how fraught rebuilding a healthy relationship around food/nutrition can be, shedding light on the harm fatphobia can do.
I can ALSO see how it could be triggering to those who have or have experienced ED or disordered eating.
Read with caution.

This was an emotional graphic novel. It was a sad but hopeful story about learning to love yourself. TW: The MC struggles with body dysmorphia and depression. When she buys a new chocolate bar at her local bodega, each bite allows her to reflect on her past. She is able to see from a new perspective her strained relationships with food family and friends and start a journey towards healing. I loved the magical realism and the character development

Picked this one up (and finished it) yesterday. It was such a sweet book with a bunch of concepts that really hit home for me. I have a horrible relationship with my body, food, my feeling of worth.

If you have a chance to read this one. Please do.

LazyOwl I read this a while back. It's an important book I think, and the format works well. 3y

Another quick graphic novel/comic read that I came across while browsing. The illustrations are beautiful. I liked the underlying lesson of the book to love yourself more and to be kinder to yourself.

This was a fun little story of a girl who bought some chocolate and with each bite she went back to a challenging time in her past that led to a eating disorder and feeling ashamed of her body. But also with each trip to the past she is trying to teach her younger (and present day) self to find her worth and learn to love herself again.

Mindy is not the person she wants to be. Suffering from body dysmorphia and an eating disorder, she pushes away everyone who tries to get close to her.

Can a magical candy bar help Mindy make peace with her past and start loving herself as she is?

A graphic novel about an eating disorder but also about magic chocolate that lets you go back and see your past.

By coincidence, I wound up reading another graphic novel about a character dealing with an eating disorder. Mindy struggles with her self esteem daily and she turns to food (and purging) for comfort. In this comic, she finds a chocolate bar that forces her to confront her past by making her watch key moments. It‘s a good story and beautiful art. #mentalhealth #selfesteem #comic

This was a gut-wrenching GN about how you look at yourself, based on yourself especially, and others around you. About a girl with an eating disorder who learns to love herself after looking back at her life. Book 6 of #quarantinereads #netgalley #24in48 #stayhome24in48 #socialdistancingread
