Penny Dreadful Sensational Tales of Terror
Penny Dreadful Sensational Tales of Terror | Various Authors
15 posts | 3 read | 22 to read
Body-snatching! Premature burial! Cannibalism! The original Victorian-era penny dreadfuls entertained the masses with shocks, thrills, and lurid horrors. This terror-packed anthology includes two novels—The String of Pearls, which immortalized Sweeney Todd, the demon-barber of Fleet Street; and the original 1918 edition of Frankenstein—as well as tales by Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson, Stoker, Alcott, and Conan Doyle.

Please help me welcome @Kelloggst to Litsy. She is very dear to me as a student to a second-year teacher, as a friend, as a mom, as a nurse, and as a fellow book lover.

T, I thought I would send you a bunch of people I enjoy on this site, but there are so many I'm afraid I will leave someone out so my suggestion would be to search your favorite books to see who also enjoyed them. The Penny Dreadfuls were the last ones we discussed. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

DaveGreen7777 Welcome to Litsy @Kelloggst 🥳🎉📚 Hope you enjoy your time here! 5y
Kelloggst Thanks!!! I‘m still trying to figure it out, but I‘m excited to be here! 5y

Switching between these books as the mood strikes me. I‘m reading Wrecked for the Common Read and it‘s about the aftermath of a campus rape, so I can only read so much. Penny Dreadfuls is fun, Gothic fiction (my husband‘s present to me), and I‘m following the adventures of a Narnian horse and his boy, Shasta, in The Horse and His Boy.

Remember, I am not recording the vision of a madman. The sun does not more certainly shine in the heavens, than that which I now affirm is true. Some miracle might have produced it, yet the stages of discovery were distinct and probable. After days and nights of incredible labour and fatigue, I succeeded in discovering the cause of generation and life; may, more, I became capable of bestowing animation upon lifeless matter.

RaimeyGallant Nice quote. :) And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you're interested. :) 7y
Ravengoewin Thank you so much! That‘s a lot of helpful tips. I‘m glad you guys pulled them together somewhere easy for all to find. 7y

My friend got me this beautiful book for a going away gift! It's got silver gilt pages and the gorgeous details go down the spine and on the back cover as well. I will think of her every time I read one of the classic horror tales within. 😊😢

I'm almost done binge watching Penny Dreadful and cannot believe I didn't watch this when it was airing. It is stunning. In an effort to surround myself with all things Dreadful, I picked up this beautiful B&N collection and this stunning Vanessa Ives pin this week. I'm looking for recommendations for reads that have the same feel (with or without monsters). Any ideas?
