Glass Town: The Imaginary World of the Bronts | Isabel Greenberg
21 posts | 22 read | 36 to read
A graphic novel about the Bront siblings, and the strange and marvelous imaginary worlds they invented during their childhood Glass Town is an original graphic novel by Isabel Greenberg that encompasses the eccentric childhoods of the four Bront. childrenCharlotte, Branwell, Emily, and Anne. The story begins in 1825, with the deaths of Maria and Elizabeth, the eldest siblings. It is in response to this loss that the four remaining Bront. children set pen to paper and created the fictional world that became known as Glass Town. This world and its cast of characters would come to be the Bronts escape from the realities of their lives. Within Glass Town the siblings experienced love, friendship, war, triumph, and heartbreak. Through a combination of quotes from the stories originally penned by the Bronts, biographical information about them, and Greenberg's vivid comic book illustrations, readers will find themselves enraptured by this fascinating imaginary world.

If I was rating just on the merit of the bold, stylized illustrations, this graphic novel would get 5 ⭐️, but I found the approach to the narrative was really lacking.

I would have preferred a more even split between the biographical elements and the imaginary Glass Town. The silliness of the Glass Town characters‘ exploits took away too much from the reality of the Brontës‘ early lives. Maybe because the book‘s aimed at a young audience?

3 ⭐️

Was initially distracted by the artwork of this graphic novel - it's a little scribbley & smudgy. But as I got into the narrative, I realised how it related to, and enhanced, the words telling the story. And what a fascinating & absorbing story it was. What sad, bleak lives those Brontë women endured - no wonder they retreated into their interior worlds. But then the imaginary became preferable to real life.... A really fantastic read.

Could cry! Had just settled into bed with my book & my cup of tea when my daughter, who is a die-hard cosleeper, rolled into me & I split my tea all over this gorgeous book! Gah, never spill tea on my waterproof Kindle, no. Just on real, porous, non-waterproof paper! 😭😭😭😭

Such a wonderful — and beautiful — look at the imaginations of the Brontë sisters (and their bother) as children! Isabel Greenberg is such an excellent #story-teller and artist. I really felt like I was stepping into the beginnings of genius.

While the art isn‘t really to my taste, I felt immersed in this historical novel about the Brontë siblings. I‘m calling it a pick because it will stay with me. The three sisters had unusual lives and their literary legacy is amazing. Cartoonist Isabel Greenberg explores the inner lives of the siblings by dramatizing their juvenalia, blurring the lines of reality in an intriguing way. #graphicnovel #comics

I never warmed to the art in this graphic novel, which surprised me because I LOVED Greenberg‘s earlier work. This one has a lot of ugly black smudginess and too little contrast between colours. I guess it shows how the Brontës blurred the lines between reality and their jointly-created imaginary world, but it doesn‘t work for me.

Charlotte Brontë: All three of them died in the space of 8 months, Charles. I‘m the last one.
Charles: How did it happen?
Charlotte: Branwell first. Consumption… and addiction. Then Emily. She caught a chill at his funeral. I mean what sort of horrible plot twist is that? I couldn‘t even write such a thing!
Charles: Well… you probably could. You always did have a flair for the dramatic.

Starting with something a bit lighter to kick off 2021 in a good way ? I love Greenberg‘s artwork, and diving into the imaginary world of the Brontë‘s, so this was a perfect combination for me.

This was such a beautiful, poignant, imaginative blend of the fantasy world of the Brontes‘ first stories and their lives in Howarth. It was meaningful, symbolic, funny and occasionally very trippy. Recommend so much to anyone who loves the Brontes!

Brontë enthusiasts - take note. Combining facts about the Brontes, along with their imaginary world, Greenberg has created a graphic novel filled with illustrations that perfectly go along with the Brontë persona. I‘m not as familiar with the juvenilia but know the Brontë backstory, so I could easily follow this. I liked it!

This is a graphic story about the imaginary world, Glass Town, that the Brontë siblings created when they were young. The collected writings are known as the Brontë juvenalia. The author made up some of the story around the story in this book and the result is a wonderfully imagined tale of the power of imagination and escaping into another world when reality is about as sad as it can be. Sound familiar?

A very interesting and atmospheric graphic novel about the Bronte siblings‘ imaginary world Glass Town. I don‘t know enough about their real childhoods or how much of this is fact, but this is an amazing introduction to their vibrant inner world.
Both fantastical and moving.
Puts me in a Bronte-ish mood...

A story about the Bronte siblings and their imaginary worlds. Glass Town is one of their worlds/ stories.
The different color palettes signifies different part of the story; past, present and imaginary.
