A heartwarming, yet quirky, story about a boy called Jerry whose much-loved puppy, Ginger Pye, goes missing. Jerry and his sister begin a desperate hunt for Ginger, who they're convinced has been stolen away by the stranger in the yellow hat. After months of fruitless searching the children are about to give up hope when a chance gust of wind reveals the villain to the children and Ginger Pye is saved. BLA book which has stood the test of time and deals with the special relationship between a boy and his dog in a fun and lively way

I really did want to like this book more. I think it comes from a time when everything was slower. It‘s a very sweet book, but I agree with several other posters, it did move pretty slow. Found myself skipping over entire paragraphs the last few chapters just to finish. And we were doing it as a read aloud.

I struggled with this book a lot. The main problem was that it was a book about a dog that was hardly in the book. Another issue was it repeat itself frequently. A character would think or say something and then it would be stated again a lot of times in that same chapter. However, the message was valuable for young readers and the story line pulled at your heartstrings so understandable why it earned a Newberry Award.

amber_ldsmom Yeah, it‘s a bit misleading. The story is really about the brother and sister, not the dog. 5y

I thought this one was really cute, nothing significantly wonderful about it, just a sweet, easy read. #NewberyEpicChallenge #Booked2020 #AnimalonCover

BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds like a good choice for uncertain times. 🐶 5y
Butterfinger I just wished that Ginger Pye wasn't lost for such a long time. I think that is really what bothered me the most. 5y
amber_ldsmom @Butterfinger Yeah, I would have liked some adventures of Ginger Pye and the kids before he got stolen. He was gone a good part of the book, but I thought Jerry and Rachel were pretty entertaining in themselves, so it didn‘t bother me too much. 5y
Butterfinger You are right. I appreciate you choosing this book. I have already read Girl Who Drank the Moon. I hope you enjoy it. 5y

I thought it would be a book about the awesome adventures of Jerry and Rachel and their puppy. It turned out to be a mystery and the children are trying to find the"Unsavory Character" who stole their puppy. #NewberyEpicChallenge @amber_ldsmom

amber_ldsmom Sorry you didn‘t enjoy it that much. Thanks for joining in! 5y
Butterfinger @amber_ldsmom it was just all right. I think I will read more of the series. I guess I thought it would be like Cleary's Henry and Rigsby. 5y

I know this is a classic, but I did not enjoy reading it to my kids. I thought the writing was just awful. There was so much unnecessary repetition, even my 10 yr old was exasperated by it. And the title is misleading; the book is not about the dog; almost the entire thing is about Rachel and Jerry *looking* for the dog. And the illustrations (by the author) are horrible. I wanted to bail but Lena wanted to finish, so we did.

I‘m baffled! How did this win the Newberry!?!? I know the story is dated, but soooo boring! Sentences run on and on and on... My grandson wanted to finish so I pushed through and am looking forward to another book tomorrow. 😶 I just didn‘t care anymore.

A few of the boys books. My 1st grader and I read Geronimo Stilton last night, they are so fun to read out. Lots of action and excitement and mouse squeaks. Not to mention cheese related cries of dismay.

Not the edition I have, but first to come up.
When I worked at a children's bookstore eons ago, we would get a display of Newbery winners every summer (I forget which publisher). Those summers, I would read two or three Newbery titles a month. I'm starting that tradition again ... with one I've NEVER read!

Well, since I've already done one shamelessly non-book-related post tonight, why not another?

My mom is visiting my brother & sis-in-love and that there little squishy potato is James, my nephew! I want to go to there! 😍

I often find myself picking up childhood favorites as comfort reads. I love this book and all the Moffett books. I definitely need this comfort today as I just found out my cat who lives with my sister has cancer. Our other cat just got diagnosed with cancer two months ago and my husbands cat who lived with us died in Sept from cancer. it's just too much. Our cats are like our children. My heart is broken. 😢
