I don‘t know about you, but I‘m a sucker for those videos of soldiers returning home and surprising their kids at school. This little poem is called “Homecoming” and is meant to distill that fear and relief, the trained brutality and helpless innocence that crashes in together in mighty waves.

Putting a stack together for #ripxii on this #thrillerthursday 👻 I may have also done some online browsing for some classic horror novels but I'm supposed to be on a book buying ban sooooo... what to do? Are there any amazing horror novels I MUST HAVE!? I'm considering The Haunting of Hill House, Rosemary's Baby, and The Crow Girl, among others...

emilyhaldi @RiotMom I forgot about that one! It's also an option I was considering. Happy to hear a positive review! 7y

valeriegeary Yes to the Haunting of Hill House. And We Have Always Lived in the Castle too! It's hard to go wrong with Shirley Jackson 7y
valeriegeary More contemporary recs: Bird Box and A Head Full of Ghosts 7y
Kristy_K Serial Reader has some Edgar Allen Poe and HP Lovecraft stories if you're looking for older classics. 7y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @valeriegeary My sentiments exactly! I think Bird Box is the best horror novel Ive ever read. 7y
bookloo Have read HALF of Crow Girl, it's a looong one, incredibly violent, definite triggers throughout, but pretty good in overall tone of creepiness/thrills. Need to go back to it soon. 🖤 7y
batsy I've never read Susan Hill and I'm thinking of finally reading this one next month 7y
Reviewsbylola The Crow Girl fo sho. I bailed on My Favorite Thing is Monsters. Graphic novels are just not for me. 7y

This is a great first line that dumps you straight in the middle of a story that has started without you. It lets you know in eleven words that the protagonists are in trouble and at least one may be helpless to save herself. #Foreshadowing @RealLifeReading #booktober #Day16 #GreatFirstLines

silverlocusts There's a whole book of stories about the family, which Ray Bradbury worked on with Charles Addams prior to the creation of the Addams Family. They all have that same creepy hominess. 8y

Illustrated version of a classic Bradbury story. The illustrations capture well the eerie quality of the narrative, but the story is just a little too disjointed for my taste. I do like how the protagonist, the only human in a family of ghouls, grapples with his humanity.
