Well-heeled travelers from around the world flock to the Mena House Hotelan exotic gem in the heart of Cairo where cocktails flow, adventure dispels the aftershocks of World War I, and deadly dangers wait in the shadows . . . Egypt, 1926. Fiercely independent American Jane Wunderly has made up her mind: she wont be swept off her feet on a trip abroad. Despite her Aunt Millies best efforts at meddling with her love life, the young widow would rather gaze at the Great Pyramids of Giza than into the eyes of a dashing stranger. Yet Janes plans to remain cool and indifferent become ancient history in the company of Mr. Redvers, a roguish banker she cant quite figure out . . . While the Mena House has its share of charming guests, Anna Stainton isnt one of them. The beautiful socialite makes it clear that she wont share the spotlight with anyoneespecially Jane. But Jane soon becomes the center of attention when shes the one standing over her unintentional rivals dead body. Now, with her innocence at stake in a foreign country, Jane must determine who can be trusted, and who had motive to commit a brutal murder. Between Aunt Millies unusual new acquaintances, a smarmy playboy with an off-putting smile, and the enigmatic Mr. Redvers, someone has too many secrets. Can Jane excavate the horrible truth before her future falls to ruin in Cairo . . . and the body count rises like the desert heat?

Surprisingly refreshing. Jane was a fun heroine to get to know. Liked how her background was revealed and how she used her wits to investigate. Really liked the setting as well. Redvers was interesting and got to understand a bit more about Aunt Millie‘s odd behaviors as the story progressed. Look forward to reading the next book in the series.

A fun, quick read that whisks you off to 1920s Cairo, Egypt & the luxurious Mena House Hotel. Recently widowed Jane Wunderly is traveling with her aunt & looking forward to a relaxing vacation but then there‘s a murder & she becomes a suspect. Throw in a handsome stranger, a little mayhem, antiquities, & secrets & you have the makings of an entertaining read. Not as good as the Amelia Peabody books but I‘ll be following Jane on her next adventure.

Started this one last night and am enjoying it. Definitely more on the Death on the Nile than Crocodile on the Sandbank side of things so far but if murder and mayhem in 1920s Egypt is your cup of tea, this might be worth a look.

I liked the exotic locale of this cozy mystery set in 1920's Egypt, but the mystery didn't grab my attention. I felt lukewarm about the characters but am willing to give the next book in the series a try sometime to see if they grow on me.

Murder/Thriller isn't my jam but the genre was pulled in a challenge so here we are. I enjoyed the blend of intrigue, romance, and just enough of ancient Egypt archeology. I really enjoyed Jane. She was determined, strong, and very intelligent.

Dottie is helping me start some dahlia seeds for our containers today while I listen to my latest audiobook. For a tiny shiver dog, she is all about being outside lately even if the temps are below 50! I get it, I am eager for spring too.
The book is good so far. I really liked Elizabeth Peters‘ Amelia Peabody series, and this is a similar time period and location. I‘d love to have a new series that plays around with similar elements in a new way.

I started my fourth #NewYearWhoDis book this morning! It feels mighty nice to have a goodly stack of mysteries to look forward to. I‘ve read relatively few of them these last couple years.

Sometimes you forget to resuspend your holds and you end up with four more novels than you intended to borrow. Thank goodness I no longer have a TBR so I can actually hope to get through all the non-renewables before the due date.

I AM excited about this lot, especially the final two vols of HONEY AND CLOVER and the two books from @Laughterhp ‘s #NewYearWhoDis list (tagged and COFFIN ROAD).

Laughterhp Hope you really enjoy them! I also really liked Battle Royal! 3y
xicanti @Laughterhp I‘ve got audios of two others (BOMBSHELL and THIS SIDE OF MURDER) out, too. It‘s gonna be a very NYWD couple of weeks! 3y
Laughterhp Oh awesome! I‘m hoping to get started on Or What You Will today/this weekend and still waiting for Role Model from the library. 3y

This week‘s audiobook was Murder at the Mena House. Jane and her Aunt Millie travel to Egypt and stay at the Mena House, but when Jane becomes a suspect in a murder, she sets out to investigate. I liked the setting and characters in this cozy—the mystery wasn‘t as intriguing as I had hoped, but I‘ve already got the next book on hold!

#CurrentlyListening to this fun #cozymystery set in 1920‘s Cairo, at a posh hotel full of tourists. It‘s been good so far, but right now the heroine is making one of those stupid mistakes I hate: jumping to conclusions that make little sense. 🤦🏻‍♀️ #FirstinSeries

#BookReport - Finished 5 books this week. 3 on audio. I was on an audio roll! Probably because it was finally nice enough to walk outside for a few days.

Currently reading 2 books and 1 audio. I was getting really bored with The One yesterday. Not a lot is happening and it switches perspectives way too much. I‘m not able to get invested with any of the characters.

#WeeklyForecast - Just read, not sure what I‘ll be in the mood for this week.

Cinfhen Agreed!! Audiobooks are my go to!!! Love them!! 4y

I‘ve been devouring audiobooks lately! This one was a really great start to a series. Jane is in Egypt with her aunt when a woman ends up murdered and obviously Jane is the main suspect. So she has to work with Redvers to figure out who the real killer is. This is set in 1920s after WWI made her a widow. She‘s also American and has been through some STUFF!

I‘d really recommend this one! And the second one comes out at the end of this month.

kspenmoll Sounds good! Great review. 4y

This was fun! Jane, the MC, is someone I could be friends with. The writing was very descriptive, which I always like, and the charactors were interesting. The mystery was well plotted and the location fed my childhood dreams of visiting Egypt. I'll keep an eye out for the next in the series.

I have been deep in the writing cave, but the draft of the next book is finished and I‘m able to share some of my Covid isolation reads.

Murder at the Mena House takes place in a posh Cairo hotel.

Jane Wunderly accompanies her Aunt Millie to Egypt and finds mystery and murder.

A cozy mystery set at an upscale hotel in Cairo in the 1920s. Jane Wunderly has traveled with her Aunt to Mena House on a long overdue trip abroad, & the trip gets a whole lot more intriguing when a guest of the hotel is found murdered.
.
I thought the romance was played up a little too soon, but it quickly settled in. The characters are well drawn & have interesting back stories that give an extra layer of depth. A good way to spend a few hours.

SaraRosett I love that cover!! So fun! 5y

I suspect that it is me more then them, but l'm noticing that, as much as like reading cosy mysteries, l'm often disappointed by them.
And honestly, l could even take the romance if the mystery made sense. Unfortunately, it often happens that the romance is central, the mystery is a mess and the historical setting is dubious.

This is certainly an accurate description of this novel.
Pity, because Cairo in the 1920s was an unusual setting.

Let's try this instead.
Another murder mystery set in the 1920s. In the Cairo, and unusual setting.

MariaW Before Corona I sometimes went to Mena House for breakfast. Let‘s check if the setting is correct. 😜 5y
JazzFeathers This Mena House is in Cairo. Is that where you went? (I've never been to Cairo, but l'd love to). The book is not bad, by the way. 5y

Set in the 20s at the height of 'Tutmania', Murder at the Mena House is a cozy mystery that takes place in the hotel of my dreams, the Mena House in Cairo. This book is actually quite well researched and it's easy to tell the author has spent time both at the hotel and exploring the city. The characters are likeable, the plot is appropriate for the time period and you're enveloped by the atmosphere of Egypt from the very beginning.
