The Camelot Betrayal
The Camelot Betrayal | Kiersten White
25 posts | 20 read | 15 to read
The second book in a new fantasy trilogy from New York Times bestselling author Kiersten White, exploring the nature of self, the inevitable cost of progress, and, of course, magic and romance and betrayal so epic Queen Guinevere remains the most famous queen who never lived. EVERYTHING IS AS IT SHOULD BE IN CAMELOT: King Arthur is expanding his kingdom's influence with Queen Guinevere at his side. Yet every night, dreams of darkness and unknowable power plague her. Guinevere might have accepted her role, but she still cannot find a place for herself in all of it. The closer she gets to Brangien, pining for her lost love Isolde, Lancelot, fighting to prove her worth as Queen's knight, and Arthur, everything to everyone and thus never quite enough for Guinevere--the more she realizes how empty she is. She has no sense of who she truly was before she was Guinevere. The more she tries to claim herself as queen, the more she wonders if Mordred was right: she doesn't belong. She never will. When a rescue goes awry and results in the death of something precious, a devastated Guinevere returns to Camelot to find the greatest threat yet has arrived. Not in the form of the Dark Queen or an invading army, but in the form of the real Guinevere's younger sister. Is her deception at an end? And who is she really deceiving--Camelot, or herself?

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 344.

I've noticed a trend with Kiersten White's books... I read the first book in a new series or trilogy and absolutely LOVE it. I anxiously await the publication of book 2, start reading as soon as I get my hands on a copy, and then completely lose interest in the story. I've tried 3 times to get invested in this story and it just feels like a chore to get through it, so I'm giving up.

Johanna414 @TheAromaofBooks this was my #bookspin way back in March - finally admitting defeat! 🤣 3y
TheAromaofBooks haha sometimes it's hard to admit that a book isn't the right fit, especially when you enjoyed the first one!! I still have the first book for this series sitting on my shelf... one of these days... 3y

Wow! This girl makes a lot of decisions based off of assumptions... I think I just expected more growth from her in this second book.

"Ah, yes. That story. That is what happens when men tell your stories. Would you like to hear the real story?"

Guinevere shook her head. "The real stories are always worse."

"Yes. They are. I am going to tell you anyway." Morgan le Fay leaned close, her voice low and melodic as she rewrote everything Guinevere knew.

quote

"That was the other lie of stories. Even when the stories told were true, they never talked about what happened after the quest. About all the wounds--visible and otherwise--that lingered long after the neat close of the tale. They had rescued the damsel. The end. But the was still so much pain there, and perhaps there always would be."

I couldn't wait any longer to get started on the sequel to The Guinevere Deception, which I really loved, so I got a copy not long after I finished the first book, and now I've finished this book.

Just. Wow. I love Kiersten White's writing. She really knows how to draw out the power and strength of her female characters. Watching Guinevere grow more into her own here was the highlight of this book. (Continued in Comments):

asterese I was a bit disappointed not to see more of the same growth among characters, but there were so many plot points to take care of too so there's that. Over all, it was a good sequel! 3y

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have been really anticipating this sequel and finally just got around to it. I liked Guinevere and her character. I do like the problem with the sister. I did feel like there were times the book was boring and confusing.

Solid second book. I don't remember much about the 1st book though. I really enjoyed the characters relationships in this one. ⭐⭐⭐ Also, I love the cover.

Linear I tried to get into the first book, I really did. But it just made me think back to my middle school days when I was obsessed with every version of these kinds of stories. And then I felt old lol... 4y

The drama with Guinevere and Arthur amps up ten levels. Guinevere is finding her footing as a queen with Arthur gentle and steadfastly supporting her. Her struggles of doing the right thing and dealing with the consequences is a huge component to this leg of Guinevere's duty. Loving this story progression.

Making some movement on this great audiobook and I‘m hoping I‘ll be out of my slump now. Feeling much better after resting and recharging today. My husband was off too and we watched a Harry Potter movie and napped and also took the dogs to a friends to run them out a bit.

Defiantly a slower and more mellow read, works well as the middle book. It wasn‘t of intense adventure, but of deceit and mystery. Not as frantic as the first, yet full of heart and determine who you really are when you get to make your own choses. Not the one others demanded and made for you - no matter how they pretend they didn‘t. I look forward to the finale of Queen and King. Of Guinevere and Arthur

I love Lancelot as the Queens knight
She is a knight of the round table, but is the queens knight specifically. Let alone that she is an incredible knight in her own right. It would be nice to see the other knights of the round table respect her more, as there still not sure if they like a female knight. Even if she is removed from the politics of it all as the queens knight

First real snow/ice fall of winter 2020 knocked out the power. So this afternoon I‘ll be exclusively reading this second of the trilogy
I am so excited to get back to the mystery of Camelot. I‘ve never been really into King Arthur, but this story is so well written. So far here, there seems to be a good deal of recovering from the last more then anything else. The cover and flip write up has me worried the castle is going to burn in a storm

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Mostly filler, but it was very pleasant, atmospheric filler. I think this series is going to be better as a whole when the third comes out than individual entries as the books aren‘t too long — I‘m ready for the next one to actually progress the plot!

I. Love. This. Series. It has everything I want to find in an Arthurian story. I hope the characters get a happy ending in the next book, because otherwise it will break my heart. Also, I‘m swooning over Lancelot taking care of Guinevere. I want my own Lancelot! I love how the character has been reimagined, while still keeping the core qualities that make Lancelot “Lancelot”.

ShelleyBooksie Is this a graphic novel? Gorgeous cover 4y
ulrichyumiodd @ShelleyBooksie No, it's a regular novel. The first one in the series is titled “The Guinevere Deception“. I agree that the cover is absolutely gorgeous! 4y

Continuing with the fantasy retelling of King Arthur, I enjoyed this even better than the first. There were some questions I had after the first book that were answered in this follow-up. I really love that Lancelot is a woman in White's series, with the same unbeatable reputation we're familiar with from the legends. I've been immersed in a lot of Camelot-esque stories this year & this book adds to the fun. I'm anxiously awaiting the 3rd book.

This was good but not great. A lot of what I liked about the first one (mostly the female friendships) was absent. The middle of this one dragged, and a lot of the characters became one-dimensional. It was OK.
