Second or third time reading but as good as ever. Took notes this time to discuss and remember better.

This book about the global war on drugs is a mixed bag. On one hand, it personalizes the violence perpetrated on people by making drugs illegal and thus putting their control into the hands of cartels. On the other, there is some dangerous misinformation here about the opiate epidemic that diminishes the author‘s arguments about finding a path to legalization, so I can‘t quite recommend it.

All the stars. Insightful and readable, I couldn‘t put this down. Read this if you care about the opioid crisis, mass incarceration, and how we fight the combination of drugs and crime. Also valuable if you want to learn about the issues from end-to-end. I couldn‘t recommend it more.

That moment when the last book you finished runs directly into the book you just started. The war on drugs is completely and entirely different for people of color than for white people. This is the third time I‘ve seen it said in print (that I recall). This is why I‘m angry about social injustices, among other reasons.

Recently, I am just *ready* to be finished with my reading challenges. I might even ditch one. But I‘ll definitely finish #Booked2019! This one is my #aboutaddiction pick. Hoping I like it.

alisiakae I often feel this way by the time fall rolls around, so I try to have them mostly done by this point! 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft Glad to know I‘m not alone. I‘ve done a LOT already—five challenges with 5 books yet to finish total. Assuming I ditch the one ... which is looking pretty likely! 5y
Cinfhen As long as you‘re not bailing on #Booked2019 😁😘 5y

One of the best non fiction books I've ever read. It has completely changed not only my views on drugs but has given insight into how the world works and what is important in life.

For an authoratitive documentation on the War On Drugs in the last 100 years it reads like a thriller, each chapter a story in its own right - and all adding up to one inescapable conclusion - criminalising drug use must end. Hari's prose are fascinating and lucid.

Mike61 Now going to be made into a major film. 6y

Although I took issue with the audio performance, this was a fascinating and incredibly well-researched book offering a sweeping view on the war on drugs over the last 50+ years as governments around the world varied greatly in how they treat addicts (like criminals or like human being who need help) and how they treat legal prescription drugs versus street drugs despite how often legal use often leads to abuse of easier to get/stronger drugs.

BlazinHoney Bought it sometime ago but still haven‘t read it 😓 definitely on my list 6y

I had a few "almost fits" for this prompt on my e-shelves, but I think this is the only true onomatopoeia title.

"The opposite of addiction isn't sobriety. It's connection."
This book is phenomenal, and has changed a lot of my thoughts towards the War on Drugs. It reads like a thriller at points, and its arguments and presentation of facts make for powerful reading.

kiminreverse Yes! I don't think anything else i've read has changed my perspective so much. 8y
hallsfair @kiminreverse I agree, there was so much in this book I didn't know, it was mind blowing 8y
